I'm a long time fan and occasional victim of the Dunning Kruger Effect but somehow I never saw this Wikipedia blurb about the first study of it:

"The study was inspired by the case of McArthur Wheeler, a man who robbed two banks after covering his face with lemon juice in the mistaken belief that, because lemon juice is usable as invisible ink, it would prevent his face from being recorded on surveillance cameras."

Well, the study that gave it its name anyway.

In the early days they wouldn't send back off-model animation of Moe because it heightened his ugliness.

Stuff like this is part of the reason I found it almost impossible to take anyone who self-applied the term "artist" at all seriously until well into my late 20s, and I'm still pretty skeptical, I just stopped caring.

Incidentally, is there a term like this that covers people who have developed a lot of technical skill without (or at the expense of) the critical thinking to go with it? You know, like shred guitarists and most photorealists.

And also the phenomeon whereby incompetents will achieve a level of commercial success on strength of their own misplaced confidence? That happens, to. C.F. the PUA community and motivational/self-help gurus in general.
