Man of Steel is one of the few movies I've fallen asleep to. Basically I wanted to get out of the rain, smoked a joint with the manager and fell asleep . The beginning part was pretty tits. Snyder knows what he's doing, and he's probably watched this critique. He's basically a fanboy making movies, which led to the best comic book movie ever made, Watchmen. Glad this guy mentioned Miller tho; the contrast between Batman and Superman is super-apparent, and I kinda wish the next Superman was All Star Superman rather than this because even when I was a kid it was too political. I never got that: Batman lives in Gotham, Superman in Metropolis, but sometimes presidents are generic whitehaired dudes and other times it's Nixon or Reagan, and Washington DC's a real place, as is Moscow, etc etc.. And if Watchmen's any indication, Batman never existed because of a thwarted robbery in NYC in the first place, which never existed. Maybe if I was older I would've gotten the zeitgeistyness of all of 80s DC but who's Superman fighting for now? Jeb? Rand? Guess we'll see. Whatever this movie looks great.

I know, superhero movies with interesting narratives are rendered void of substance and value by having people with powers fight villains.

Just like how even a well written and socially relevant love story is neutered and generic by having the leads fall in love. And sports movies cannot offer anything original as long as the team competes in a competition in the end.

Superhero movies really are a plague. Before they existed Hollywood didn't make their big budget tentpole movies familiar, unimaginative and repeated to heck. We'd instead have original content this year like Furious 7, Mission Impossible 5, Terminator 5, James Bond 24, Jurassic Park 4, Hunger Games 3.5, Star Wars 7, and so on. Or maybe a ton of horror movies reliant on jump scares, washed up SNL stars getting hit in the crotch and making racist jokes with a cheap budget, and romances where two young popular tabloid celebrities flirt, have a misunderstanding, make a romantic gesture, and implicitly bang with no actual discussion of sex or relationships. But instead it's superhero movies that are the albatross keeping Hollywood from being creative.

So first you were watching a porn movie, then you fell asleep and woke up in the Superman movie. I'd like to hear your synopsis of the film. "The movie opens with a pizza delivery man and two buxom women without enough money to pay him. Eventually General Zod arrives on earth and begins his reign of terror."

"Watchmen" was a decent comic book movie, IZ, but I'd say both "V for Vendetta" and the first "Hellboy" have it beat.

But you must have liked The Crow.

Yeah Hellboy and Crow are awesome, I was thinking more "mainstream" DC/Marvel and less fringy Vertigo/Dark Horse stuff. V for Vendetta was good, but it wasn't really that faithful to the source material like Watchmen was. Kinda like From Hell. I really liked that movie too but watching and reading it are two different experiences. Not that you could really pack all of those things into a 2 (or 3) hour movie, but Watchmen attempted to and succeeded, at least in the Directors' cuts. Diehard fans can complain 'til the cows come home about the glossing over of minor characters' backstories and the big change at the end, but I dunno. Even in the "short" theatrical release I was nearly in tears the whole time over how good it was, the perfect soundtrack, basically everything.

So in other words I'm glad to know that Snyder's doing this. I'm not a big Avengers fan but I get the feeling that John Faverau and Joss Whedon know their shit, just like Abrahams and Star Wars. I'd bet good money that Abrahams would win in a Star Wars quiz over Lucas. That's because they're all kids who grew up with this stuff, like I did. Nolan, Singer, etc. are great directors but I like the enthusiasm, if nothing else. And sure, 300 sucked, but honestly so did the book. I mean, it's pretty and so's the movie, but I think "Goodnight Moon" had more substance.

Super hero movies are easy to strip of anything except visual effects and boring characters because a central theme of the genre is superpowers. Superpowers don't have to represent anything in particular except "wow, that was cool looking". This makes them amazingly able to be produced in short order and have the added benefit of not being a risky medium of entertainment. Hollywood loves that.


I hold no illusions that Hollywood wasn't making crap before super hero movies. Neither do I think that super hero movies are holding it back.

You'd have Joss Whedon cramming in all his favorite characters to an already bloated series and making a movie that's two and a half hours of quips and action setpieces.

It's turned every movie in the past 10 years into a sharp orange/blue contrast nightmare.

I never read the Man of Steel series, but wasn't it pretty "dark?" At least compared to bright ones like All Star Superman. Like not "dark" as in "colorless" but like Dark Knight Returns, sort of a grittyish reboot to make people sort of forget about the horrible Superman Sequels and campy colorful Batman respectively. This is just going off a google image search, but I'm curious.

If Superman has a problem, it's just the fact that he doesn't have a mask, and I really can't see anyone besides Christopher Reeve ever playing him. It was just too perfect a match. It's written into the freakin' comic that Batman's not always the same Batman, but Clark Kent's always Superman, as far as I know, and Reeve just captured that perfectly, and so did Dean Cain as a possible substitute. I dunno, the new ones just seem to be handsome faces with nothing much else there.
