Never gets old.

Haha I've seen this before but never knew it was a parody of anything, just a weird non-sequitus. It's funnier now that I know the context.

I remember this one and the fake ad for "Swill" bottled water fresh from Lake Michigan.

It was a parody of the Heinz ketchup ad featuring Carly Simon's "Anticipation."

eww. I've swallowed Lake Michigan water accidentally a few times. In Milwaukee in the summertime it's pretty much like being on the beach. After the first time I got out and walked down the beach and discovered a nice little selection of dead fish and used syringes. :(

Another great fake ad from SNL: Quarry cereal - "Better tasting, because it's mined."

"But now there's new SUPER Colon Blow!

Calm down. New Shimmer is a floor polish AND a dessert topping!

My favorite was still this weird ad inserted into a "Japanese F.R.I.E.N.D.S" sketch that I watched because Radiohead were going to play something off Kid A which hadn't been released yet.. oh the days before youtube, where you had to sit through something for a lot longer than the "skip this in 5..4..3.." anyway it was this inexplicable commercial for some product, I think a candy bar, and the whole ad is just roaches crawling around and being magically turned into candy bars. I don't think SNL's ever made me laugh so hard, but I was also super-high.

TeenerTot - 2015-04-29

Call me low-brow, but Oops I Crapped My Pants still makes me laugh.

Old Glory Robot Insurance ... for when the metal ones decide to come for you. And they will.

Little Chocolate Donuts have been on my training table since I was a kid.

deadpan - 2015-04-28

Aw, this version is missing the beginning where a little creative editing makes John Belushi look like a track and field star.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-28

Sorry about that. I think that version may still be on Hulu, if you're in the US I chose this because it's on YouTube, and so fairly stable, if the copyright police don't spot it.

infinite zest - 2015-04-29

You'd think that after 40 years they'd just make some of these old ones public domain

cognitivedissonance - 2015-04-28

He was the "fat one".

He looks downright trim by today's standards.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-28

Might have been the cocaine.

There are a handful of dead celebrities I genuinely mourn, I miss John Lennon, because I'd love to hear what he would have to say about Fox News and George W. Bush. I miss Leonard Nimoy because the older he got, the more gravitas he brought to Mr Spock.

John Belushi haunts me, because I think he could have been one of the greats. If I try to imagine what a Belushi in his sixties would be like, the picture that emerges is tantalizing. The Blues Brothers and Animal House are fun pictures, but I can't help imagining that in some parallel universe a grizzled old man with blazing eyes is turning in some truly great work for the ages.

That guy - 2015-04-28

He absolutely could have been. He had a brain.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-28

His woodenness here is amazing. I have a theory that one of the hardest things for an actor to play is a bad actor. If you go too far, it's just phoney. You want to have some affect, but you want it to sound forced. Belushi hits that sweet spot with precision.

Around this time, Belushi did a bit where he announced on the show that he was training for the Olympic decathlon, and tried to finance his project by selling commemorative medals. It was great.

That guy - 2015-04-29

If you boil it down to the most cliche acting problem, giving "less" is harder for most actors than giving "more". Some go the other way.

It's hard for some to play a half-blunted person or a stilted bad actor because they'll ham up the characteristics of having not enough characteristics.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-29

My favorite performance of a good actor playing a bad actor is Vincent Price in Theater of Blood.

back when you could still smoke on television.
