For three years I lived within 100m of Edinburgh Castle, and for 6 years I worked within 200m of Edinburgh Castle. Pipers are aplenty, and they all want a share of that tourist moolah.

So I know the difference between a shit piper, an average piper, an adept piper and a balls out pro.

This is a balls out pro right here.

Also, for a time I lived in one of the closes off the royal mile (a 'close' is an alleyway, or courtyard), and one of the Ghost Tours would bring a piper into the alley and blast old favorites at certain times of night and dusk during the summer months; you could set your watch by it. This could have been filmed outside my front door; that seriously looks like my old place.

Did you see a lot of ghosts?

I've never been to Scotland, but I did have a weird dream about Eric last night, where he was telling me to look for a letter that was somewhere on his shelves.

I hope his funeral was a good one. He was one of a kind.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-05-10

I lived in that area too, but only for about 4 or 5 months. I really liked it though.

Do you guys know much about piping from a musician's standpoint? I had a question about ornamental grace notes, but as a non-piper with no piper friends, I've been having a difficult time finding the answer.

The question is this: are there any standard melodic rules about adding ornamental grace notes? For example, if you were playing a legato Eb and wanted to break the Eb up into fourths, is there a codified grace note which you'd go to - G or D, drop an octave or whatever - or do you just improvise and play anything you like? Also, does the ornamental note which a piper favors stay the same throughout a composition, or does it change depending on the pitch of the melodic note currently being embellished?

>>This is a balls out pro right here.

I've always wondered about that. Thanks for clearing it up.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-10

Good piping is one of the best things. Bad piping is what most non-Scots think all piping is.

This guy is pretty excellent.

That note at 1:44 (and again a few times after) is phrased so well. Also the way he does those melodic leaps starting around 3:13 by rotating his wrist rather than moving his fingers. I don't play any wind instruments (well, I played flute for a few years in middle school but I never practiced), much less bagpipes, and even I can see how god this guy's technique is.

When were you there Purple Cat, and why? Folks what live and work on the Royal Mile are such a diverse yet close community, as I'm sure you know. PS, secret time: I used to run a whisky / cigar shop there.

My first few years in POE were difficult. I got dogpiled a lot. Looking back, I'm not going to say I deserved it, but I will say... I had a lot to learn about internet.

If Repomancer had participated in my daily beatings, I'm sure I'd remember him a lot better. I always say that it's the the most obnoxious members of any group who are by definition the most visible. This goes for feminists and antifeminists, conservatives and liberals, Christians and atheists. It was true before the internet, and the internet makes it more true. Humanity always looks worse than it actually is. The decent people are easy to overlook.

I want to say that what moved me to post this was the photograph of Eric's smiling, gentle, nerdy face. That was gave me a sense of loss, a feeling that I had missed out on something beautiful. And I thought we could use something ceremonial. I know nothing about the tradition of the bagpipes, don't know how appropriate this music is is, I just thought we would probably prefer not to hear AMAZING GRACE.

I'm almost 60 years old. ;) I'll be making this journey myself one day. For whatever time I have left, I really should try to not let the good ones slip away unnoticed.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-10

Repomancer was just nice and friendly. I know whenever someone dies, it's standard practice for everyone to act like the newly-departed was a saint, but in Repo's case it was probably true. I can't remember him ever being shitty to anyone; not even you, Mr Holmes, which has got to be some sort of record.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-10

LLOL (Literal LOL)

Most people are saints, they're just not very good ones. When the bag of guts falls away, it's perfectly natual to see the saint for the first time. There's nothing phony about it. It's just a shift in perspective. You don't pretend to see people differently, you really do see them differently. Too bad we're not better at being saints. We could see them that way when they're still here with us.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-10

I remember Repo BECAUSE he was one of the few who were never shitty to me. He even stuck up for me a few times.

The world needs more people like him, but there seem to be fewer and fewer.

Adham Nu'man - 2015-05-10

Glad to have you around John

fluffy - 2015-05-10

He did have that weird ongoing thing with Casey Serin (the wannabe real estate mogul), but even that was more like he was goofing around all in good fun and Casey was in on the joke.

Lef - 2015-05-10

My interactions with Repo were always good, and I remember enjoying a number of his stories, particularly the developer ones.

Hats off Repomancer, spilling some of Shochu.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-11

Thanks Adham, glad to be around

duck&cover - 2015-05-10

He seemed like a nice guy. RIP Repomancer.

Patient Property - 2015-05-10

damn. this brought me back. all y'all PoE Red dinos are good people. somewhere let's imagine Chris the Parade Kid dancing awkwardly in Repo's memory.

rustedmutt - 2015-05-10

Seems to be a trend this week, suffered a terrible loss myself.

My condolences to his friends and family.

Bort - 2015-05-10

Very sorry to hear it. You can share if it helps, otherwise at least just know that people are sympathetic to your situation.

rustedmutt - 2015-05-10

I appreciate that, Bort, thank you. Still very raw.
