"bandwagon" & "cashgrab" come to mind as tags.

That guy - 2015-05-13

also "FHRITP", right?

EvilHomer - 2015-05-13

I feel like rating this based on the flagrant Jimmy Olsen trolling, but I will wait until I hear from JHMF, about whether this is empowering towards women or not.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

How the fuck should I know? Ask a woman.

I can see how you'd think I'm a sensitive insightful guy, because I can discern that Thunderf00t is a misogynist or that "FUCK HER RIGHT IN THE PUSSY" is degrading to women, but this is a little more nuanced.

I think this is empowering to women if women like it, if this is a superhero that young women can relate to, and enjoy. But these things often transcend gender. I know a young woman who is crazy for star wars, and is estranged from her father, and I suspect she may be moved by the Luke Skywalker/ Darth Vader relationship.

StanleyPain - 2015-05-13

The thing with her rescuing the plane will be in the pilot and it will be the last thing even remotely sci-fi-y or comic book-y in the show until the season finale. Everything else will be basically Gilmore Girls.

Hooker - 2015-05-13

So, Superman with a lot more crying, lusting after boys, and needing advice to get through every decision. Got it.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-05-13

I totally thought SNL's parody of a Black Widow movie wasn't realistic but it is totally spot on!

https://youtu.be/j_5KgpN38hM

roofle - 2015-05-14

Wow that parody is so much like this show, down to the bitchy female boss.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-05-14

I KNOW. WHAT THE SHIT.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

It's not impossible that the SNL writers got an advanced look at this trailer, but either way, it's pretty funny.

Callista Flockhart's J Janice Jameson character could still work. I think she's either going to transcend the cliche , or fade into the background, depending I suppose, on whether Callista gets better acting jobs.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-05-15

Did they really rip off Spiderman that blatantly? Jeez.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-13

"This is what normal looks like."

No...no it really doesn't.

Bort - 2015-05-13

"It's not an S ... it's a backwards S."

"Oh for fuck's sake, you're looking in a mirror."

I wouldn't mind if they can keep the tone light on this, and a lot less "I'm just a girl, what to do, what to do" than this trailer makes it out to be. Joss Whedon has provided all kinds of examples if you need ideas on a good woman lead; or you could even look at "iZombie" which does pretty well with a strong lead who could be excused for being mopey and tearful, and yet isn't.

Bort - 2016-05-13

Dear Bort from exactly one year ago: trust me, you're going to love this show. You know how you are constantly frustrated that DC has trouble doing a Superman who cares about everyone no matter who they are, tries to bring out the best in people, and uses his powers creatively ... ? Not only does the show do all that, those are CORE THEMES of the show.

Also, search Youtube for "Melissa Benoist puppies". The video's probably not there yet, but trust me.

Gmork - 2015-05-13

Hey look, a pile of dogshit.

That guy - 2015-05-13

Yeah, Flockheart looks pretty bad.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-05-13

She needs a muffin or five to go along with her coffee.

Nikon - 2015-05-13

This looks terribad.

Wander - 2015-05-13

Of all the superhero shows you could have ripped off, you chose ARROW?

Imagine if they'd ripped off daredevil.

IrishWhiskey - 2015-05-13

People are pointing out the most similar pre-show trailer for a superhero show is Flash, which is actually quite good.

But yeah, I'm on board with this lacking the embracing of silly comic book fun that Flash has, and instead seeming like the TV version of the Supergirl movie. Namely idiots starting with "What species is a girl?" and thinking a reference to a totally different more popular comic franchise they actually treated like a hero, will result in a big enough tie-in audience.

Heck, if you wanted to make Ugly Betty the Superhero, that could be great. Ms Marvel is generationally a bit of that and I'd love that show. But don't mix the worst of both worlds.

Chocolate Jesus - 2015-05-13

don't get me wrong, this looks like a heap. but no more so than the average super-hero turd cranked out for you callow shit-munchers.

fluffy - 2015-05-13

Smallville: GIRL POWER edition

The Mothership - 2015-05-13

Thank goodness that girl has a man in her life to tell her how to fight crime.

That guy - 2015-05-14

So you're advancing the argument that bopsey girls DON'T suck at practical stuff?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

>>So, Superman with a lot more crying, lusting after boys, and needing advice to get through every decision. Got it.

You can be forgiven for forgetting all those long ponderous scenes with Kal-El getting wisdom from Kevin Koster and the hologram of Russell Crowe. They were pretty forgettable.

If there ever was a character who needed to be transformed into a sexy black dude, it's Jimmy Olson. He was already dated in the sixties.

Does she still have the mini-skirt? She does? Okay, I'm in.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-14

>> Does she still have the mini-skirt? She does? Okay, I'm in.

Wow. Talk about rape culture. Mr Holmes, I am surprised with you.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

>>Wow. Talk about rape culture. Mr Holmes, I am surprised with you.

I, on the other hand, would have been surprised if Homer hadn't gone for the cheap shot. I thought if I mentioned the miniskirt, we could get it out of the way.

Homer , rape culture is about intimidation and humiliation. It's not about legs, or breasts, or any other naturally occurring body part. The miniskirt is adorable, and it's iconic. I can't think of another superhero who wears a mini-skirt.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-14

The miniskirt is a weapon for the objectification of women, and you're practically raping her with your eyes. Why can't we just have Supergirl wearing jeans and a nice flannel shirt?

EvilHomer - 2015-05-14

You know what were iconic? Lara Croft's huge breasts. Where were you when we had to defend those?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

I'm.sure Lara Croft's huge breasts will win in the end.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-14

But which side were you on? Were you in favor of the iconic breasts, or against them?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

I don't know. it depends on whether Lara's breasts are running as a Democrat or as a Republican.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

>>So you're advancing the argument that bopsey girls DON'T suck at practical stuff?

Are you advancing the argument that bopsey girls actually exist?

EvilHomer - 2015-05-14

It's a simple question, John, and you obviously don't want to answer it because you know whichever way you go with this, you'll be in trouble. You've been highly supportive of sex-negative feminism in the past, yet here we've got a case where something iconic which YOU value is, according to conservative SNF standards, misogynistic and in need of change. Lara's breasts, high heels, chainmail bikinis... Supergirl's miniskirt.

Where are your principles?

That guy - 2015-05-14

(Bobbsey twins/2 + "little girl, big world") x chipper confidence - horse sense = bopsey girl

Duh.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

t's a simple question, John, and you obviously don't want to answer it because you know whichever way you go with this, you'll be in trouble.

Homer, I don't give a shit about Lara Croft's breasts. I'm not familiar with the Tomb Raider game, so I don't have a clear Idea of what her breasts look like in the game. but I don't think large breasts by themselves are good or bad.

I've supported Anita Sarkeesian's right to publish her videos without being subjected to character assasination on a mass scale, but, as I've said many times before, I have no opinion on whether the views expressed in those videos are correct. I don't play video games, and I don't usually watch her videos. If someone was actually trying to suppress video games, instead of simply discussing them critically, I'd be against that, for the exact reason why I'm against what I view as an attempt to suppress Sarkeesian's message through the limited means means available. That includes intimidation, misrepresentation, and libel.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-05-13

Okay so Jimmy Olsen is black...great. Does he have to be the opposite of Jimmy Olsen's personality? Jimmy Olsen is not confident, he's full of angst and innocence and doesn't know what's going on half the fucking time. This really bothers me...not that he's black but that he's a playa.

Also fuck this whole show.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-14

^ Exactly! It's one thing to change Jimmy from a pasty ginger into a black guy; nobody likes gingers, so Original Jimmy wouldn't do well on TV. But this Jimmy seems to be: cool, confident, athletic, charming, and good at his job.

He is literally a Mirror Universe version of Jimmy Olsen, something lifted straight out of one of his most bizarre Silver Age comics. And you know that they did this intentionally, simply to troll people and bait nerds into complaining - which will then be spun into the latest faux-"controversy"! Look at these ComicGaters, being racist against Jimmy Olsen blah blah blah; let's all talk about Supergirl now.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

There' s a reason for this. Jimmy Olson's function here seems to be as a go-between between Kara and the copyright-protected world of her cousin. He's representing Superman, so the awesomeness fits. And interestingly, there's another character here who seems as close to old-school Jimmy Olson as is humanly possible.

Simillion - 2015-05-14

fantasize about supergirl banging a black guy NOW

kingarthur - 2015-05-13

I watched this with the sound off and, aside from Flockhart (who looks like a corpse), it doesn't look *that* bad.

As in, my friend's seven year old daughter would think this is great. Only way she'd like it more was if it was Catwoman.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-14

You need to watch it with the sound on for full effect.

You know how dolphins use their sonar clicks to disorient fish to make them easier to catch? It's kind of like that.

There's a brief respite when she saves the plane, but then it's back to annoyingly bubbly dialogue and synth-pop background music.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-05-14

I just created a tag "Hollywood hates women" so please feel free to link.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-05-14

Looks terrible, but hey, at least it isn't dark and brooding and joyless like the Superman/Batman movie.

Bort - 2015-05-14

Since this trailer all seems to come from the pilot episode, the hope is that Kara shakes most of her insecurity by the end of the episode and is much more her own woman by episode two.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

Well, look at her glee when she falls backward off the building. Or when she sees the report of the plane rescue on the news. It's not all insecurity, not by a long shot. She loves being Supergirl.

You know what this really looks like to me, even more than the SNL Black Widow Trailer, is Raimi's Spiderman. Peter Parker dealing with JJJ and struggling to deliver Pizzas on time.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-05-15

You're so warped when it comes to young women, John. Your perceptions are completely off whenever a clip even loosely involves one of them.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-15

>>You're so warped when it comes to young women, John. Your perceptions are completely off whenever a clip even loosely involves one of them.

Yeah yeah, I've heard this before. As usual, I'm not getting a whole lot of specifics. Since you've brought it up, you might want to take it further, into the realm of actually saying something.

Are you saying that I imagined that she was smiling when she fell backwards off the building? Did she NOT respond gleefully to being on the news? Or is the spiderman analogy lacking? That's possible. It's a long time since I've seen Spiderman 2.

What I believe is that I'm the objective one, because I'm neutral, a non-combatant. It seems to me that older men who chase after young women must lack self awareness. I was in Lowe's once, getting some keys made, and the clerk was a beautiful woman in her twenties, and she was flirting with me, no mistaking it. I can't imagine why. Maybe she's been molested. She must do it with every man, and maybe most of them like it, but I felt humiliated.

Most (Nearly ALL) younger woman are never never never going to think of me in a romantic way, and I'm *MOSTLY* happy about that. It's wonderful to not be a threat, to be safely dad-zoned. They're the most beautiful creatures on earth, and the best hope of the future, As far as my perception goes, I see them a lot clearer than when I was desperately trying to get my hands on one of them. I can just talk to them now, and I enjoy that. I might as well, because that's the way it is.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-16

>>You're so warped when it comes to young women, John. Your perceptions are completely off whenever a clip even loosely involves one of them.

What you're suggesting, but not saying, because, once again, you're not actually saying anything, is the number one sexist stereotype that men perpetrate on other men. The fake men's rights movement ignores history and logic to blame feminism for the patriarchal legacy that oppresses men, (the draft, bias custody hearings, etc) and then embraces the number one toxic myth of masculinity, that a man isn't really a man if he isn't having sex, and everything is about pussy. So any man who seems vaguely sympathetic to feminism becomes a "white knight" who is motivated by a desperate futile desire to have sex with women. And these are the guys who blame feminism for anti-male sterotypes!

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-05-16

I''m not characterizing you as a white knight. I'm characterizing you as a guy who is normally pretty reasonable but gets really strange and even creepy whenever there is a video with a young pretty female in it. It clouds your judgement.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-16

If my judgement is clouded, I must be wrong about something. Spit it out, dude! Just say it! Or don't.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-05-16

My point isn't so much the content of this as much as how adamant you are about defending it to a ridiculous degree... when really it's just another crappy superhero TV show, just like all the rest of them. I think you go a little crazy taking on the internet, when really you should just sit back and not care what people think about a TV show, whether or not it involves young women you find attractive.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-16

Why does it feel like this is about YOU, caring what I think?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-16

If you think I'm creepy, you have a right to that opinion, but its not my problem. I like this for reasons other than Supergirl being super-cute. I grew up watching George Reeves suspended by wires. You don't know what a crappy superhero show looks like. I'm also one of the minority that loves Age of Ultron.

But I see guys issuing rape threats and death threats, spreading salacious rumors about Zoe Quinn's sex life, and running around yelling FUCK HER RIGHT IN THE PUSSY. Me? I enjoy cute girls being cute, from a respectful distance. I've made my peace with it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

I think it looks interesting, but I don't have a TV, and I'm not yet convinced that this is going to be worth confronting CBS's bloated nightmare of a website.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

Oh, who am I kidding? I can't wait.

That guy - 2015-05-14

OH JHM, you're incorrigible!!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-14

>>OH JHM, you're incorrigible!!

Look, I could pretend that I'm too cool for this, but I think we all know that I'd be fooling no one.

Why should I deny it? Half of you guys are into cartoon ponies.

Bort - 2015-05-14

There's a new more better trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CThmpQJ6NMY

Still a lot of self-doubt, but hopefully that won't be a series theme.

Bort - 2016-05-13

Update: this show quickly got past the insecure bits and became damn good as superhero shows go. It's not Shakespeare, but one thing it gets very right (righter than any other show has) is how Supergirl does her thing simply because she wants to do good. She doesn't need dead relatives or guilt as motivation, she simply likes to help people.

magnesium - 2015-05-14

Does a trailer need to be six minutes long?

It reminds me of Lois and Clark for some reason, so I dunno, I probably would've liked it when I was a kid. If it shows up on Netflix I might watch it I guess.

muffinbutt - 2015-05-19

Am... am I the only woman on this site.

atheistgirl - 2015-05-20

No.

atheistgirl - 2015-05-20

I, as a redhead, am annoyed that, yet again, Jimmy Olsen has been made not a ginger.

Otherwise this looks like it may have potential. As long as it doesn't get too smaltsy.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-06-12

the pilot was leaked somehow, and is available in all the usual places.

Now that I've seen it, it's well done, but it's also pretty conventional. I can understand the objections now. It looks great, and I'd say its less dumb than, say, the Christopher Reeve Superman, but Lois and Clark and Smallville were possibly both smarter. From here, Supergirl could go either way.

Bort - 2016-05-13

"Smallville" lasted for like a decade, with several seasons of the show having EVERY HERO IN THE DC UNIVERSE showing up to be heroes, except for Superman. That is so completely the opposite of a good approach to a Superman show. (I suspect "Smallville" ran into trouble by lasting more than two seasons, a victim of its own success.)
