I only watched until 4:00 since they like to spoil; I guess Guardians of the Galaxy was up there, but I can't remember a movie that I've really wanted to see that everyone is saying "see this movie." I really feel like a kid who's about to watch my first 3D movie.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-05-17

I watched the movie yesterday, and I really feel like I'm on crazy pills, or there's some inside joke that everyone but me on the planet knows the punchline to. It has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Everyone is praising the hell out of it.

I thought it was awful, pure garbage. I was ready to walk out of the theater if it went on for 10 minutes longer. It was like a Michael Bay movie with even less of a plot. That's not to say that the actors didn't do a fine job with what they had to work with, but good god what they had to work with was crap.

Sudan no1 - 2015-05-17

You're either on the crazy pills or red pills (same thing tho)

infinite zest - 2015-05-17

I can't pass judgement because I haven't seen it yet, but did you like the other Mad Max movies? Because I've tried to watch the original and every time I get bored and fall asleep. But Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome are two of my favorite movies. I guess to me the original's like the original Evil Dead.. I dunno. So I'm excited for it because it's fast cars, violence, post apocalypse, and from what I can tell a surprisingly feminist bent. In fact, the only criticism I've heard is that Hardy himself sort of just fades into the background despite the name of the film. I dunno.. basically it's the same as Fast and the Furious. If I were more into modern tricked out cars, I'm sure I'd love those movies, but I'm not (or at least indifferent) so it's 2 and a half hours of a movie that's made for someone that's not me. But steampunky hot rods? Yeah, that's for me. I'm tempted to take drugs and watch it with headphones on and just listen to music and just ignore the dialogue, and just stay for the rollercoaster ride.

Crab Mentality - 2015-05-17

Zest - See this movie.

After I saw this movie, I looked up the metacritic reviews, and even checked the reviews from the accounts of the people who thought it was crap. Almost every negative review came from either someone who was clearly dragged to see this movie, or a Men's Rights Advocate who has reviewed nothing else but video games.

I've seen every other Mad Max movie, and I'm thinking that this is the best Mad Max movie yet.

This movie delivers on what it's advertising. It's depth comes through in subtle things, small things that it doesn't explain, but relies upon the viewer to figure out. The bigger thing about it is that this movie is FUN. I don't care what anyone else thinks, I agree with the RLM guys- a fantastic movie. When I left the theater, my immediate thought was "Gee, Avengers was good, but I didn't have near as much fun watching that as I did this."

This movie has the Crab Mentality Seal of Approval, argue with me as you will.

misterbuns - 2015-05-18

harble garble michael bay plot writing

misterbuns - 2015-05-18

bay's idea of plot are mcguffins that don't really relate to the characters but foreground established franchise icons.

this movie does the exact opposite. just admit you hate movie for reasons you haven't really thought about.

infinite zest - 2015-05-18

Awesome. The only place I can see it in 3D near my work starts at 1:10 and I work at 4. That's cutting it kinda close.. Plus I should drink sand do drugs beforehand. Regardless I'm excited in a way I hardly ever am for a new movie. I am curious though. If it was the exact same movie but it was discovered that Bay ghost directed it for
Miller, would it make a difference? Bays done some shit but The Rock and Bad Boys were great, as was the non-actiony Pain and Gain. Most of the "Michael bay" movies that people talk shit about, like Con Air, TMNT, Battleship etc. weren't even directed by him.

infinite zest - 2015-05-18

Is it worth the 3D? It's also playing at 12:10 in regular format which I can easily do. It doesn't seem like the kind of movie I'd watch one time either. 3Ds kinda gimmicky for me anyway.. I dunno. First world problems! I'm freakin out here!

teethsalad - 2015-05-18

see er' in 3D

this is by far my favorite mad max movie

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-18

>>It was like a Michael Bay movie with even less of a plot.

I've never actually seen a Michael Bay movie, and yet somehow I feel like I've seen all of them.

Is "Fury Road" the actual title? I hope so, because I'm looking forward to the "Furry Road" parody.

Incidentally, "fistsoffurry" is my skype username . Don't call me, it's never on. Mostly it's for when I need to find my cell phone, I'll use it to make it ring.

yogarfield - 2015-05-18

My problem with the movie is that it was waaaaay, waaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too fucking long. I also couldn't figure out what the MRA's were so butthurt about.

yogarfield - 2015-05-18

It needed LESS of a plot. They shoehorned in a fucking love story.

badideasinaction - 2015-05-18

If Return of Kings has any common sense they should be selling reverse psychology reviews out to the highest bidder after this one.

That being said, it sounds like a pretty awesome movie; I missed my first chance to see it because I had work after the midnight opening my friends were going to, but I'll hopefully get to see it on the big screen soon.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-18

>>I can't pass judgement because I haven't seen it yet, but did you like the other Mad Max movies? Because I've tried to watch the original and every time I get bored and fall asleep.

I fell asleep during "Beyond Thunderdome", the only Mad Max movie I've ever seen. I mean REALLY asleep, in the theater, to the extent that I lost the plot. To be fair, that was the third movie I saw that day. The other two were Return of the Living Dead and Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-18

The trailer looks so ugly and CGI sodden. But then I don't particularly like Thunderdome, either.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-18

Anyhow, this movie looks like it is full of special effects, and the thing that made The Road Warrior work so well is precisely that it was made on a low budget with very few special effects. All of the action felt real because it almost was.

I've looked at the behind-the-scenes stuff on Youtube and on the one hand it looks like there are more practical stunts than I expected, but most of it is still people hopping up and down kind of awkwardly on stationary cars while a big fan blows dust at them. It doesn't look like anyone seriously risked their life during the shooting, which is better for them but worse for the film.

I don't see anything suggesting anywhere near this level of commitment:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ3NrpGGfQU

I would love to be wrong about my gut feeling about this, though. High budget genre movies are usually crap, but when they work they're really fun.

infinite zest - 2015-05-18

Yeah.. I was reading an article in Wired that interviewed the stunt guy who doubled for Max in the originals, and is still the driving double in the new one. He calls it "high risk illusion" rather than something like "death defying stunts." And it's worth noting that the budget for the stunts alone in Fury Road is 1,000x the budget for Mad Max 2. I don't have any desire to see stunt people get injured, but there's definitely a higher budget for safety and people aren't just landing on cardboard boxes anymore. In a world of CGI though, I'll take this. I'm just sad it's not in Australia, so I can't convince my parents, or at least my mom, to take me to it (seriously they'll watch anything if I say it's in Australia.)

infinite zest - 2015-05-18

Also just other cool things. Like, that flamethrowing guitar from the trailer is an actual flamethrowing guitar. For everybody that's nerding out about Star Wars and the cute new non-CGI droid and all, well, flamethrowing guitar from the trailer is an actual flamethrowing guitar.

Sudan no1 - 2015-05-17

It was fun action movie with absolutely no filler, with the delightful bonus of pissing off some dumb MRAs. Glad RLM agrees that it's a great movie.

Scrimmjob - 2015-05-17

I'm usually the first guy to poo poo a reboot of a classic film series, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. I heard that Tom Hardy has signed on to do a sequel, I really hope they don't fuck it up!

infinite zest - 2015-05-17

I'm all about reboots in principle. Most 80s movies that were special effects driven look pretty silly these days, and that includes Robocop and Total Recall. I'd love to see either of those done again, but of course with Verhoven at the wheel. And that never happens. Except here. And I'm the kind of cynical asshole that knew that the new Dredd movie would suck, and my punishment is that I didn't get to see it in 3D. I won't make that mistake again.

SolRo - 2015-05-18

You fucking take that back about Robocop (1) IZ.

Even the slightly off-brightness stop motion wide shots of ED-209 wouldn't be improved with a CG ED-209.

Everything is was fucking awesome practical effects.

poorwill - 2015-05-18

"Most 80s movies that were special effects driven look pretty silly these days, and that includes Robocop"

Fuck off. Fuck you.

Lef - 2015-05-18

Zest, 5 stars for bringing out the hate... holy smokes. Robocop was great, but the stop motion ED has aged in a few places.

Am currently stuck in japan, don't speak the language and have no idea where the theatre is. Gonna have to wait to pirate it im afraid.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-18

Total Recall IS pretty silly.

poorwill - 2015-05-18

"Robocop was great, but the stop motion ED has aged in a few places."

I'll fucking kill you. I'm going to cry.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-18

This is the great thing about being old. Young people talk about BAD CGI, and I don't even know what they're talking about. I watched Kirk wrestle the Gorn without irony. You'd hear a voice in your head say "ths looks really fake" and you'd say to the voice "Just Go with it." Any CGI after Babylon 5 looks amazing to me.

Sudan no1 - 2015-05-18

It's not even a reboot, it's a (standalone) sequel, hence the flashbacks and shit at the beginning.

infinite zest - 2015-05-19

I'm not saying that there should be a movie that replaces the greatness of Harryhausen style animation, but just saying, if in some alternate world where Robocop were originally made in 2015, we'd expect effects to reflect the time. Just like Mad Max (and to a lesser extent Road Warrior,) those movies did what they could at the time, and changing anything about them would be like changing Citizen Kane or The Godfather. But same thing: If they were just making Godfather now, and it was Leo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg instead of Pacino and DeNiro, but the same director.. etc.. I'll continue to talk myself into a hole, especially because I honestly consider Robocop to be the best movie ever made, but Mad Max Fury Road just reminds us that, just like Verhoven and others, that special effects, as big and expensive as they have the potential to get, mean nothing unless you've got a veteran director and kickass team working on the film itself.

SolRo - 2015-05-19

IZ, just shut your stupid whore mouth already.

One movie in the last 15 years does a good mostly practical/some CG blend and you forget all the horrible shit like some beaten housewife.

Lurchi - 2015-05-18

A big mystery is why did Thunderdome suck so much?

bongoprophet - 2015-05-18

The horrible music. The horrible children.

DrVital - 2015-05-18

We *really* didn't need another hero.

Lurchi - 2015-05-18

they never reviewed Black Spring Break

NO STARS

Hugo Gorilla - 2015-05-18

This movie so ripped off "Hell Comes to Frogtown."

infinite zest - 2015-05-19

That's true, from what I've seen in the trailers, but Hell Comes to Frogtown pretty much ripped the post apocalypse vibe from Mad Max in the first place. I doubt if such a movie would've existed without it.

Adham Nu'man - 2015-05-18

The movie is a a brilliant feminist manifesto with a really badass female action lead driving the story forward (Mad Max is also there, along for the ride, but the movie is not about him). There is an incredible amount of backstory that is communicated brilliantly and fluidly without the need of exposition. It's funny as hell, it's action is bombastic and relentless and the whole thing is unlike anything else on the market today.

It's a bit early to say but it might even be better than Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.

Tough American Bouncer - 2015-05-18

If any one wonders how much of this movie is practical effects, look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p86oL3TbQvs
Pretty crazy things done for real and cgi where it is the only sane option.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-18

This movie could be terrible, the Return of Kings hates it, so I'm going to see it, and I may pay for an extra seat for my cell phone.

poorwill - 2015-05-20

Saw this last night. It was pretty corny and the production was way too slick. It's really nothing special.
