I don't get it.

Steven Universe destroyed his mom when she gave birth to him because of his gem power, so the 3 female characters are sort of Jungian archetypes of different aspects of what his real mom, or any mom, is like. Pearl is the hypochondriac protective one, Garnet is the strong one but with her own problems to deal with and Amethyst is the one who just wants to have fun. Steven jumps off a diving board too

Cena_mark - 2015-05-21

Tons of the comments are dorks pointing out that Pearl isn't Steven's mother. I recently watched the first two seasons. I'm not really familiar with the fandom, but I've heard they're humorless nerds.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-21

This isn't the real show?

Cena_mark - 2015-05-21

This is STAVEN Universe.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-21

Oh, SORRY. Probably shouldn't have done that. I've displayed my ignorance of Steven Universe here before, and that got the aforementioned humorless fandom nerds all angry at me.

Is this a good show, Mark? Does it have a Rainbow Dash character? If you recommend it, I might give it a shot.

Cena_mark - 2015-05-21

I highly recommend it. There isn't a character who strikes me as Rainbow Dash. I guess Pearl is kinda like Rarity and Amethyst is like Pinkie Pie. Garnet is a stone cold badass like Applejack.

Cena_mark - 2015-05-21

Actually Lars is kinda like Rainbow Dash. He's an asshole and he tries too hard to be cool.

infinite zest - 2015-05-21

The problem with Steven Universe is that it doesn't quite know its fanbase: it's basically 70s anime style with contemporary humor, and since it's on Cartoon Network is on in the middle of the day. So for the most part, people who would casually watch it are either kids or unemployed adults (or adults who work swing shifts like me) and it doesn't have the popularity factor of "you should totally get stoned and netflix Adventure Time even though it's a 'kids show'" vibe of Adventure Time. But I'd say it's the best thing on the network and I'd highly recommend it

infinite zest - 2015-05-21

(so people either take it too seriously or say that it's not funny enough)

Cena_mark - 2015-05-21

To me it has the right mix of humor and adventure. The ongoing story awesome and the characters are great. Steven's dad is a very strong character, both depressing and hilarious.
I tried to get into Adventure Time, but I just didn't like it. It seemed like it tries to hard to be funny, and as a result all the characters are unrelateable assholes.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-05-21

If you liked Revolutionary Girl Utena, you'll like Steven Universe.

infinite zest - 2015-05-21

Adventure Time started out great but it realized it's adult demographic and now it's just ultra hipster chic. It's basically become adults' acid trips but marketed for kids. SU's got a little of that going on too, but it's not so polarizing. It'd be like if Hasbro just said "fuck it, we all know that more adults watch MLP than kids, so let's just base our stories off of fanfiction and deviantart." That's exactly what Adventure Time did with Fiona and Cake.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-21

Would you believe I was never a fan of Revolutionary Girl Utena? I did not harbor any feelings of strong animosity towards it, but Utena always struck me as being too frou-frou and shoujo-y for my tastes. I appreciated the tomboy/ lesbian subtext, obviously, but I never quite got what the point of Utena was supposed to be, seeing as Project A-ko handled similar material, only a hell of a lot better.

Also, it's too new. Didn't it come out in, like, 2000 or something? It was practically drawn yesterday.

Cena_mark - 2015-05-22

I loved the Adventure Time pilot. I was really excited for the series, but when It came out I was not impressed. You're right about it only getting worse. There's a fine line between giving the audience what it wants and baseless pandering/ letting the fans run the show. That's something writers have to figure out in this age of instant fan feedback.
MLP:FIM is doing an episode that revolves around popular background ponies. I know this is clearly for the fans, but I think they'll do a good job.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-22

>> an episode that revolves around popular background ponies.

That's the 100th episode, yes? Do you know which ones will be featured?

EvilHomer - 2015-05-22

The Internet confirms that Cranky Doodle will be featured, but that's not right; he is neither "background" nor "pony".

I hope they use Apple Fritter, and not just Lyra, Vinyl, and Derpy.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-22

What do they consider "background" for the purposes of this episode? Roid Rage, for example, has had speaking roles, so he's probably more like a guest star pony at this point, similar in status to Shining Armor and Maud. I would LOVE to see Maud and Roid, of course, but I hope the secondaries won't take away spots from awesome *legitimate* background ponies, like Roxie, Cloudchaser, the Spa Twins, or Boyzenberry. Can you imagine if the writers trolled everyone, by stuffing the episode with nothing but lame-ass secondaries like Twist and Pip?

Also, EquestriaDaily indicates that some of the Backgrounds will retain their fanon personalities... BUT SOME WILL NOT. Drama and tears ahead!

(my fingers are crossed that maybe they'll make Octavia a fun-loving party pony, and Vinyl the uptight bitch)

Cena_mark - 2015-05-22

They better not include Derpy. Derpy is an example where following the wishes of the adult fans is a bad decision. It wasn't a good idea to use a fan made character that mocks the mentally handicapped. If they include her I'll complain to Hasbro again.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-22

The only person who thinks Derpy is mentally handicapped is you. When the rest of us see Derpy, we think "Oh look, there's a cool pony who is totally awesome just as valuable as any other pony in Ponyville". We don't see her as being "different" or "stupid" or "a target to be mocked". YOU see her like that, because you're a Derpscist.

Cena_mark - 2015-05-22

Then why is she portrayed as clumsy and stupid? All she's done is drop heavy objects on Twilight and destroy city hall. Even RD discriminates against her and demanding she not help repair city hall.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-22

There you have it, folks. Cena thinks if you act "clumsy" and "stupid", you MUST be "developmentally disabled"!

And how would you rather she act, Cena? NOT clumsy? NOT stupid? ... like a "normal person"?!? You say that you're concerned about FiM's portrayal of the developmentally disabled, but I think it's really YOU who has the problem, a problem with the developmentally disabled. What you want is to simply brush them under a rug, not see them anymore, because you think that they behave "stupidly", and that this behavior makes them somehow "lesser" than neurotypical individuals (like Rainbow Dash). That's horrible, Cena.

RD doesn't discriminate against Derpy. RD treats Derpy like any other pony: purely on the basis of what she can and cannot do in any given situation. You have a problem with RD because RD does not treat Derpy with kid gloves. RD does not acknowledge the "difference" of Derpy - a "difference" which seems so clear to you, because you are biased against the developmentally disabled.

It's also a great metaphor for anyone who has grown up in a household with a single parent, which is more common these days than I think it was when I was growing up: every Tinder date I've gone on recently has a kid, and I rarely ever see the kid. This means it's sort of a revolving door of different mom and pop figures depending on who has custody instead of the very nuclear upbringing kids like myself were fortunate enough to enjoy. It's kind of why I like Rick and Morty so much. Besides being the best animated show on television (sorry Homer and Cena) in my opinion, I like to think of it as a sort of "Calvin and Hobbes:" Rick is the grandfather who isn't really there. Morty's just a bored kid living in stupid suburbia with stupid problems and parents and a sister that all ignore him, and Rick is there to take him on adventures through time and space, blowing up the world, banging the girls of his dreams, and actually killing themselves and burying their own bodies; it's something that every kid thinks about. It's the same with SU: Every adolescent boy's dream is to be surrounded by 3 hot chicks with little or no supervision. I was surprised to learn that SU is created by Rebecca Sugar (who used to showrun for Adventure Time) and not a man, given the subject matter of the show if you read into it. The show's got a boy's brain, or at least my boy brain.
