...

We let this happen.

We should be ashamed at what we've allowed companies to do to our younger generations.

This is our fault.

God have mercy on us all.

infinite zest - 2015-05-23

Eh, it's not like this hasn't existed forever.. even some of the best games from when we were kids were often just long ads for a tv show or movie, like The Simpsons (arcade) or TMNT (arcade) and I remember the home versions of both had in-game ads for Pizza Hut and Butterfinger respectively. These days, I mostly play iPhone app games, and for example in Sonic Dash I die and have the choice to watch a 15 second ad, or just get game over. So I choose the ad and play some more.

B. Weed - 2015-05-23

Goes back to the original Tapper, really (though that was meant for bars and not kids).

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-23

But IZ, you were at least playing a game when you played "The Simpsons", "TMNT" or "Tapper".

This isn't even a game. It's a prop for your virtual avatar. You watch a commercial and your little digital doll gets a digital plate of shitty snacks to hold...so others will know they exist.

And nobody thinks there's anything wrong with this?

infinite zest - 2015-05-23

I figured there was some reward.. I still have those Burger King games for Xbox (isn't it weird how you want to say "Xbox one" when you're referring to original Xbox?) from when I won tix to the Super Bowl and I think you got coupons for a free French fries or something if you actually played it. Same with TMNT for the NES. I rented it and still feel kind of bad about taking the Pizza Hut coupon out of the manual for a free personal pan pizza.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-05-23

People are still nostalgic for the old "The Spot" video game from 7up. And I think the Kool-Aid Man had his own game on the Atari 2600.

infinite zest - 2015-05-23

Oh yeah! The Spot! I loved that game, both the Othello-esque game and the platformer. And actually the Chester Cheetah game was pretty good too. And The Noid, actually. I'd say that all 3 of those games were superior platformers than Bubsy, at least, and at no point did I feel compelled to order a Dominos pizza with a 2 liter 7 up and get a bag of Cheetos. I mean, I guess I did like Cheetos, but the two were separate, at least in my mind. They were just good games. I'm actually surprised games don't use it more, like CoD and GTA. Both just have names of things that are close to the original brand, GTA's often for comic effect (I don't think Cocko Bell was the name, but it was something like that in San Andreas) but both games have tie-ins with Taco Bell, or Mountain Dew, things like that. And I won't spoil it, but there's a very great scene in X Men Days of Future Past which could be seen as a Mountain Dew ad. If it said something like Slurm Soda or another made up name, I'd remember that I was watching a movie. Plus, in CoD, it's all about "what if modern warfare happened in South Korea or whatever" and chances are you'd be shouting out "I'm at the combination pizza hut and taco bell" like the Das Racist song were you actually over there fighting.

Gmork - 2015-05-23

Gaming is certainly dead on console.

PC gaming still reigning champion. Nothing beats insurgency or GTA V for the PC in first person. Nothing.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-05-23

if you get a console you are a sap. Pretty much letting Sony or Microsoft have complete control over how you consume *their* hardware and software. Same goes for Apple products, a bit less so for Android.
The truly free and empowering world of computers nowadays is Linux, though a pc running Windows 7 isnt bad. I'm going off Microsoft more and more these days though, they are becoming more like Apple intentionally crippling their software in an attempt to control what their users can and cant do on their machines (example. You can only develop Windows store apps with a machine running Windows 8 or above, theres absolutely no reason for this (windows 7 and 8 are essentially the same OS having the same kernel) other than MS trying to control their users)

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-05-23

Also @Gmork
I'm not into either of the games you mentioned, but the great thing about pc gaming right now is the enormous choice of games, there are tonnes of great indie games being released frequently these days, stuff with innovative gameplay and mechanics. To name a few awesome memorable games I picked up or played recently.. naissancee, infinifactory, invisible inc. , kerbal space program, elite dangerous, legend of grimrock 2, factorio, the banner saga . PC is the platform where there is an audience for great games and developers can make them without compromise.

gravelstudios - 2015-05-23

The last console I bought was a PS3, and that was years ago. With things going the way they are in the current console gaming world, I don't see any reason to buy any of the current gen consoles.

infinite zest - 2015-05-23

I always had computers growing up because my dad would bring them home, but of course they were last year's model (or back then probably 5 years ago) so it was frustrating to get a game that would barely play, but looking back it was great because I'd figure out a solution and loitered around at Egghead computers for new cheap parts like the kid in Empire Records that I should've been issued a restraining order. But I did like just getting a game and knowing it would play. I don't understand why the console wars exist anymore. I really haven't thought about it since the "nintendont" days, and usually exclusive releases turn out to be disappointments, and overshadowed by the titles that are on both (or all 3) systems anyway. All the things that made you cool as a kid because you had a genesis and not a Nintendo and therefore weren't a total pussy have just been replaced with an indifferent cynical group who doesn't care.

Bisekrankas - 2015-05-23

Grimrock 2 does not spport linux which suck, especially since the dev team is finnish, also -- fuck console gameing, fuck it to hell. It is runining innovation and it is ruinig gaming in general.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-23

If it weren't for all of the best music software being PC/mac only I'd have no good reason to use Windows, but 7 and XP are pretty solid if you don't install a bunch of bullshit (that's what a laptop is for).

Chocolate Jesus - 2015-05-23

mork whats your steam handle, i play insurgency :D

Kid Fenris - 2015-05-23

PC Games are for nerds. Your precious boring Steambox can't even play Splatoon!

TheOtherCapnS - 2015-05-23

Gaming PC and all consoles or STFU. Tell yourself you don't want to play the exclusives all you want; it's cute.

Also video gaming isn't dead. You don't have to use this part if you are playing video games.

Gmork - 2015-05-23

I'm masquerading as Teddy these days. (tm)| Teddy. No parentheses - imagine the (tm) is the actual symbol.

The picture is this: dinakelberman.c om/infom/img/teddy.png

Gmork - 2015-05-23

Feel free to stalk/harass/play games with me.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-24

Some PC games are garbage. Starbound, Joy Pony, SimCity 5, Company of Heroes 2, Fallen London, Myth, MMO-anything; there's a ton of junk if you look for it. That said, I agree that it's a lot easier to find decent PC games; the average quality of a PC game is, and always has been, significantly higher than the quality of a console one, and while there are some truly exceptional console games, they almost always improve if they get ported to PC or are released on both platforms simultaneously (Just Cause 2, MK9, and of course world's finest FPS game, Borderlands). The reverse is also true: games that go from PC to console are invariably made worse (Mass Effect and IL-2 Sturmovik being the two series that most spring to mind).

That is not to say that consoles are completely without merit. There have been a lot of fun, quality console games over the years... only now, most of the good stuff is old, very old, and available on emulator. So, ironically enough, if you want to play the best "console" exclusives, things like Chrono Trigger, Uncharted Waters, or Way of the Samurai, PC is the way to go for them too.

The best part about PC gaming is that there's such a wide selection of truly exceptional games. The best games in the world right now are being published by Paradox Interactive, and they're PC-exclusive! I'm not going to lie, Call of Duty is OK. Uncharted can be fun, if that's the sort of thing you're looking for! But there's really no comparison between those games, and something like Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Mount & Blade, Hearts of Iron, Vicky, or my new favorite time-waster, Cities: Skylines.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but it is rare that I agree with you fully, Gmork, and I am very happy when we do!

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-05-24

PC gamers: Still oblivious to how sad their war cries really sound.

Gmork - 2015-05-24

I know youre just trolling EH, but trying to say myth isnt a good game just shows how bad of a gamer you are.

Gmork - 2015-05-24

Sexy Duck Cop - PCs are better. Scientifically. All effort trying to deny that is wasted effort.

Gmork - 2015-05-24

There is literally no game that has been modded for more GAME STYLES than Myth 2: Soulblighter.

It is also, next to Marathon (another bungie game), one of the first multiplayer games to exist with all the MODERN gametypes (and tons more). Every permutation of gameplay is possible. Co-op. Multiplayer 2-team. Multiplayer FFa with up to 16 teams. 3-team. 4-team. 5-team. 6-team etc.

Somehow EH I think you played a teeny bit of VANILLA myth (no mods or anything), sucked at it, and called it a day.

That's alright. Not everyone is good at vidya.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-24

I won't lie, Myth was pretty good back in the 90s, but you don't really think it held up over time, do you? The graphics aren't very good, there's no role-playing, no inventory management, the persistent leveling was rudimentary at best, and there were barely any units to choose from, either in number or in variety. Why can't I train the units I want to train? Why can't I customize the hairstyle of my dwarves? Why can't I play as an LGBT character? There are so many problems.

It comes down to the fact that Myth is too simplistic - basically a button-masher - and doesn't really measure up against later RTT games, like Medieval II or the brilliant Men of War.

Chocolate Jesus - 2015-05-24

any of you guys play warband napoleonic wars?

Crab Mentality - 2015-05-23

The best part is when he shoves it up his ass.

gravelstudios - 2015-05-23

I'm glad I'm not the only person who saw that.

robots - 2015-05-23

I also liked the implication that eating hot-pockets makes you bigger, which is true in real life

Cube - 2015-05-23

Hot Pockets for your Nature's Pocket.

Harveyjames - 2015-05-23

He puts it up his ass plate and all.

ashtar. - 2015-05-23

Well, it's better than putting them in your mouth.

badideasinaction - 2015-05-25

I rewound it just to make sure I saw that too.

yogarfield - 2015-05-23

part of a very effective campaign to train kids to put the controller down and go outside.

Cena_mark - 2015-05-23

I was expecting a real game like Chex Man. Chex Man rocked.

That guy - 2015-05-23

Is there a toilet prop?

That guy - 2015-05-23

Tap both bumpers to violently get rid of Hot Pockets™ Snack Bites and restore your avatar to full health.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-05-23

I'm so glad I sold my Xbox 360. I put it up on eBay and sold it the day I got a Wii U.

Literally the only reason I held on to it was so I could play Bayonetta, as the PS3 version runs like shit. But then they included Bayonetta with Bayonetta 2 so my 360 was useless. Although, to be fair, the only reason I own a Wii U is, also, to play the Bayonetta games.

I really wish there was a way to kill console exclusivity and just have everything released on PC. I mean I like my PS4 and all but there's not really anything it can do that my PC can't do ten times better and the only reason I have it is because I have a gay relationship with InFamous, Uncharted, and Final Fantasy.

Void 71 - 2015-05-23

I sold my modded Xbox 360 because I didn't think the games were worth the cost of a blank DVD-R.

duck&cover - 2015-05-23

Why is it wearing half jeans/half shorts?

Sudan no1 - 2015-05-23

It's the player's avatar. By clicking that icon you consent to shill for partially rotten meat I guess.

Hammer Falls - 2015-05-25

The half pant is an avatar award for playing You Don't Know Jack, I believe.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-23

I remember being like 13 and feeling insulted by the Pizza Hut product placement in TMNT II for NES.

Simpler Times, I guess.

Kid Fenris - 2015-05-23

At least it came with a coupon for a free personal pan pizza!

Too bad I lived in Germany at the time and no German Pizza Hut accepted the coupon.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-24

There is a small but real chance that I still have that coupon at the bottom of the box of old NES games and manuals in my closet.

The Mothership - 2015-05-23

I remember saying that 'video games are dead' when you stopped being able to download any game you wanted off of a warez site, but they're still around.

I don't play them anymore, I discovered girls.

Gmork - 2015-05-23

That's just for technogeeks with spreadsheets, right?

EvilHomer - 2015-05-24

Most of the old warez sites are gone now, but they're unnecessary on account of all the reliable, high-profile BitTorrent sites. TPB and KAT aren't quite as exciting as blindly stumbling into a chaotic Latvian warez site with your antivirus protection turned off, but they get the job done.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-05-24

As a PC gamer, let me write a 7 paragraph essay every chance I get to explain how I never discovered girls:

StanleyPain - 2015-05-23

HEY GUYZ I HATE TEH GAYSTATION AND X BONE TOO CAN I BE COOL??/

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-05-24

StanleyPain, the secret to being cool was inside of you all along.

Nikon - 2015-05-24

The only new game I'm really pumped for this year is
Metal Gear Solid V, and that'll probably be the last good game from Konami.

oddeye - 2015-05-24

fuck ALL GAMES everywhere AT ALL TIMES.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-05-26

This never would have happened if we hadn't abandoned mode 7.

chumbucket - 2015-05-26

It could be A LOT worse. For example, Second Life becoming as mainstream as Xbox.
