this would serve well as a phonics-style noob introduction into why bass is a percussion instrument

chairsforcheap - 2015-05-26

1:01 is where i came

fedex - 2015-05-26

I learned bass to learn this song back in der 80s

kingarthur - 2015-05-26

I filled in on bass for a friend's band once in high school and this song kicked my ass and made me grow up musically.

I learned playing along to The Pixies. John Taylor whipped me into shape.

fedex - 2015-05-27

Save a Prayer also has a great bassline, fun to play

spikestoyiu - 2015-05-27

Hey, I also learned bass via the Pixies!

I knew this bassline was crazy, at least during the verses. I had no idea it sounded like that during the chorus though.

It's early enough in the morning for me where I missed the title on here and the original YT title, and thought the song sounded a bit different than I remember it. I kind of like it more this way. It actually reminds me a bunch of the Pixies, with Black's vocals sounding way off in the distance somewhere. Can't remember which song it is that I'm thinking of.. "said the man to the laaaady.." oh well I'm long overdue for a pixies binge and I'll figure it out.. well, except for that new album. Jeez!

Oh. Hey!

spikestoyiu - 2015-05-29

"Hey" and "Break My Body" were probably the busiest songs, bass-wise. Not that Kim was an exceptional bass player.

hammsangwich - 2015-05-26

I've heard this song a million times but never noticed the bass line. It's pretty rad.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-05-26

Duran Duran is an extremely talented band. Had they not looked like a bunch of models they probably wouldn't have been quite as popular, but maybe people would've better noticed how skilled they were.
Oh, and the 80s were ripe for a lot of white British dudes playing some great bass. Mark King, Mick Karn, Tony Levin, etc. Lots of great stuff.

My wrists are hurting just listening to this.

gravelstudios - 2015-05-27

This makes me feel like I'm playing F Zero.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-27

Ehh.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-27

Meh.

Potrod - 2015-05-27

Not shitty enough?

EvilHomer - 2015-05-28

Exactly. This song falls into that peculiar trough of music, whereby the song is doubtlessly bad, but not so-bad-it's-bad. The riff is neither particularly interesting, nor, as Mr Maggot Brain points out, is it technically difficult. Yet at the same time, the experience isn't quite awful enough that I can bring myself to appreciate it ironically; the riff is just "there", it's bland and and does not stand out.

'Miracles', 'Tubthumping', 'Vampires Are Alive': when you're going to make a shitty song, suck boldly! Sadly, that is a lesson which Duran Duran never learned.

Maggot Brain - 2015-05-27

It's a cool riff but you guys suck at bass. it's just "pop-mute-run-run-run" and "airy fifths."

Maggot Brain - 2015-05-27

Sounds more like the left hand on a clavi.

Potrod - 2015-05-27

Cool riff > technically difficult riff

Maggot Brain - 2015-05-27

*Plays whole lotta love bass line*
