I'm a big fan of classic pinball machines, thanks for this.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-26

There's a video of it being played on the channel.

I think I saw one of these at a vintage shop not too far from where I live. Can't remember if it was for sale or if it worked, basically it had a whole bunch of other stuff piled on top of it. I think the oldest working one I've played is Fast Ball, which was some 30 years later!

technically though I guess it depends on your definition of "pinball" which to me means flippers, which didn't happen until the late 1940s. Everything before that was more like Pachinko.

Well, that's why it's called pinball and not flipperball.

This video gave me a sort of breakthrough moment of realizing that it was "pinball" because of the pins. I've never encountered a pinball machine old enough to have actual pins, just a couple of broken pachinko machines, so I never really made the connection.

I'm not really a pinball guy though, at least not in the sense of playing it often or being good at it or even enjoying it much, but I really like the machines themselves as pieces of functional art.

I bet I would get pretty in to it if I could play for free, though. Same thing with bowling. I know I would love bowling if it was free, but as it is I like it but am not good enough at it to really get enough out of it.

It doesn't help that I grew up in a candlepin-only part of the world. I literally never even stepped in to an alley with regular tenpin available in it until my 20s. It's a lot easier.

Yeah that's how I got into pinball.. as a kid I always sucked, but Terminator 2 was cool because of the gun, just like my grandpa's old pachinko machine he kept in his speakeasy was more fun than any other game. But when I started working in bars, we'd have the maintenance people come in and they'd leave about 5 credits in the machine so I'd just play them before we'd open if I got all the opening work done, which for the most part was showing up and turning on lights. It was like my reward. Then I just turned out living with pins, mostly bar rescues, and enjoyed doing my own maintenance. So now I leave myself a buck for 2 games a night, and I don't always get the replay, so I just treat it like the lottery except I know I won't win anything. But there's lots of tournaments with good amounts of cash on the line so in a way, it pays off.. plus it can still look kinda cool, at least in my mind, vs. playing the video lottery at the bar. Everyone else at the bar is probably just thinking who's the dork playing pinball and not talking to anyone?

What's funny is I loved bowling when I was a kid. I was never super good but could usually bowl somewhere in the mid 100s, but all my experiences bowling as an adult have been horrible, mostly because the people who want to go, while friends, are drunk and we get kicked out.. but not like for falling over or accidentally throwing the ball so hard that it goes into the next lane or puking on your own lane drunk (ok the puking thing happened once).. just kind of a buzzed/have a good time and probably get a bunch of gutterballs in the process drunk. And that seems to piss off the other patrons even though it's after they kick the kids out. I wonder if that's why pinball's so big out here, because there are only two ways to be good at pinball: stone cold sober or pretty fucking drunk. There is no inbetween.
