pulling and/or filing down a chimp's teeth was (and in many places still is) a common practice among trainers.

:(

That way it's harder to eat your face off when they finally flip out one day.

thats what I was thinking

I recall late 70's and 80's was all excited about trained chimp comedy. But it still finds avenues to new profits. TBS' The Chimp Channel near the turn of the century is one that comes to mind. I'm not real sure what started the craze over it. My earliest memory of monkey humor was BJ And The Bear and Any Which Way But Loose. When the apes take over, they will be reminding us of this continuing comedic exploitation.

It's exploitation, but hey, at this point in time, Chimps couldn't talk, so it would be nice if the Apes took that into consideration, the same as dogs would with such classics as Turner and Hooch and the obviously CGI'd mouth of Dog With A Blog. Friendships between Man and Ape are emphasized, as well as Apes' ability to save the day when Man cannot. Now, horses have something to complain about; Mr. Ed was a horribly treated horse, getting a carrot up his butt to make those facial expressions. And when it began, the Apes did want a peaceful co-existence, so maybe they'll spare some of us who appreciated that vision, even if it was in the form of zany comedy, and absolutely shocked when we found out about the teeth pulling thing. Like, at least let us be your sex slaves or something, just not the mines.

What makes you assume that Mr Ed did not enjoy having a carrot shoved up his rear-end? I know many people who would pay good money to have such a thing done to them.

I actually kinda knew the bass player from The Producers; he plays a lot in Madison Wisconsin, also home to Garbage's Shirley Manson. Madison's like where very forgettable bands go to retire. Or, in Milo Auckerman's case, go to college.

A lot of people nowadays believe that using chimps in entertainment programs is in poor taste, exploitative, or even cruel. What are people's thoughts on that? Do you agree or disagree? Why?

If you agree, then what are your thoughts on entertainment that utilizes other animals: Dog With a Blog, Maru the Cat, or even shows with humans on them?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-05-29

The only people I know who think that are PETA, and they're quite literally retarded.

I suppose if you're like, beating the animal into submission to do your bidding that's pretty fucked up and cruel and you should probably be thrown into the nearest volcano. But if you aren't harming the animal in the process then no, I see nothing wrong with it.

Also if you've turned on the tv in the last, oh, 30 years, and you're worried about *animals* being exploited, you really need to rethink your moral priorities.
