Wow, I actually wanted to do this project a long time ago and somebody has beaten me to it.

It never really struck me as a "kids show" though, even when I watched as a kid, it was more of a graduation from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and the like. And a lot of Saturday Morning Cartoons were like that in the 90s like ALF, making references to Tabby Pot Pie and stuff, as well as shows like Life With Louie, which had more adult-oriented innuendoes which would sadly define a generation growing up on CGI shit like Bee Movie, Shrek and whatnot.. seems like a lot of those shows belonged on prime time, alongside Capitol Critters Fish Police and Brad Bird's Family Dog.

The first few seasons of it were second only to Fraggle Rock when I was little. I never realized it was in production until 1991, I assumed those last few years were reruns.

Used to watch this all messed up in my early twenties after a long night partying. Best after-parties ever.

It's on Netflix! My kids think it's weird.

Awesome! I just got Netflix. With the exception of Silicon Valley and Last Week Tonight, I wonder why anyone has HBO these days. I was lamenting freeboxing my Peewee's Playhouse box set after my ex and I split.. It was the same with us: get drunk or high, and wake up to the DVD menu which I think is just the first 30 seconds of the intro song, over and over. "We put on Pee Wee's Playhouse last night?"

I wonder if the Sun Tea episode is still on Netflix, assuming it's in the kids section. It came with the disclaimer that you should not attempt to make it and will most likely get sick, but I kinda doubt that too many kids bought the DVD, vs kids who might randomly come across it when their parents leave it on kids mode for them.

Oh yeah @OZ: the last couple of seasons used mostly recycled material if I recall; I think the live bits were new but it's been a while.

The horse one was pretty excessive.

It's pretty subjective with age though. It's no surprise that Yvonne got around, but even tame musicals like The Music Man make (very) subtle sexual innuendoes, something similar to pee wee talking to ms. Yvonne in the bath.. So our adult brains might assume that she rides that horse so well because all of the plowing, but I kinda doubt if that was the writers' intent. But then again, cocks in the little mermaid, "sex" dust in the lion king.. Somebody knew and probably kept it to themselves.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-28

No, it's pretty clear that she's deliberately playing it like she's masturbating with a mechanical horse, Chicken Lady style.

I love how much this show got away with. For the most part I got the jokes; every kid's heard "milk milk lemonade," wanted to see Yvonne naked, and knew about places in France.. the only one I remember not getting was from the shotime special, which you could rent in the kids section: whys Jambi so excited about his hands, and if he was waiting a long time for them, how come they didn't show what he was doing? Also Gary Panter's designs are cooler every time I see them.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-28

Do you mean the original stage version from the early 80s? That was never intended for kids, none of his act was. The whole "doing a kids show" thing was basically dropped in his lap without him really seeking it out in particular from what I understand, which is why so much of it was so subversive (and clever, there was very little for kids on TV in the 80s that wasn't punishingly stupid) for the time and context.

I'm actually pretty surprised you found that n the children's section. MY family's local video store was dense enough to put the Dr. Seuss movie "Hitler Lives" in the children's section and even they knew enough to know that the original Pee Wee Herman Show was aimed at adults.

It was weird. The two video stores by my house were mom and pop, one store Russian and the other one Asian. To compete with blockbuster across the street and Hollywood about half a mile away hey got american titles in too, which was pretty cool, because the big ones would always be checked out at both chains. But both stores were poorly organized with their American fare: the Russian store had lots of anime in the kids section too.. It wouldn't have surprised me if Fritz the Cat was in the kids section at one point because it was a cartoon. Unlike most video stores, there were never movies playing, just music. What's funny is both the stores are still there and blockbuster and Hollywood are long gone.

Speaking of Hitler (or Bakshi) Wizards was in the kids section too

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-28

I just looked it up and it turns out Hitler Lives wasn't a Dr. Seuss movie after all, although it did reuse the basic plot and a lot of footage from a WWII propaganda short he had done earlier. All these years it turns out Psychotronic had misled me.

That video store DID have it in the kids' section and the packaging DID deceptively market it as a Dr. Seuss film, though.

The one with the boar-looking thing with the SS hat on? That's the only one I could find. If you're under the assumption that all animated programs are for children (and in the 80s/90s shows like Thundercats and the like took that style anyway) it'd kinda make sense to lump them all in the same category, hence me seeing Fist of the North Star at probably too early of an age too.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-29

This is the Dr. Seuss film:

This is Hitler Lives:

Both are newsreel style, military-use propaganda films full of atrocity footage, be warned.

You're thinking of Michael Jackson.
