The saxophone.

The soundtrack!

infinite zest - 2015-05-30

Unnecessary "found" tracking effects.. I mean, unless they had pretty decent looking CGI in low budget 80s cop movies and I just never noticed.. and the The Hoff is a little tacked on, but I would've watched a full 90 minutes of this and then some. Let's hope there's more movies like this (and good mainstream films like Mad Max Fury Road) to break the cycle of bullshit new movies.

fluffy - 2015-05-30

This was done quite explicitly as a modern-day homage, not as a "found" video.

VHS also doesn't come in 1080p, of course.

fluffy - 2015-05-30

okay that said I just got to the tracking effects, holy shit those are stupid

infinite zest - 2015-05-30

Yeah I had already seen it like 3 times because I got two of my co-workers into stuff like Purturbator and they were like "have you seen this?" and I wanted to be polite so I watched it again, and I'd still watch it again. I was surprised it took so long to get voted up out of the hopper, but I'm thinking it might have been because of that. Oh and Chocolate Jesus, I think. :)

EvilHomer - 2015-05-30

Yeah, there are tracking effects, they begin partway through the intro. I assume they were done both for aesthetic reasons (which I agree, is an infuriating trend), and to create the illusion of having more content than they were actually willing to film (similar to the manner in which faux-tracking effects were applied to "Super Turbo Atomic Mega Rabbit")

Fake tracking errors are turning into our generation's equivalent of the classic "still frame/ dramatic music" trick from late-20th-century anime.

infinite zest - 2015-05-30

but still, pretty fucking amazing. Besides that, every time I thought it'd get a bit too "nostalgic" for its own good it pulled itself together with clever dialogue similar to NTSF. Speaking of which, if they don't make a movie, please let this be a show on Adult Swim and save us from the banality that is everything besides Rick and Morty and (mostly) Childrens Hospital.

Few things have made me laugh as hard as hackerman's wonderful hacking skills..

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-30

I'm kind of hesitant to watch this because the of stuff like the tracking effects, the trailers I've seen made it look more annoying than anything, but I probably will eventually and I'll probably enjoy it.

Anyhow, this is about as "80s" as the 80s version of Little Shop of Horrors is "50s."

EvilHomer - 2015-05-30

It's 80s in the sense that it takes everything good about the 80s and leaves out the remaining 95% that was garbage.

fluffy - 2015-05-30

We're the same distance away from the 80s as the 80s were from the 50s. Holy shit I feel old now. I'm as old as my parents were when Little Shop of Horrors was nostalgic for THEIR childhood. God dammit, Old Zircon.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-30

The hacking scenes, however, are 100% accurate.

infinite zest - 2015-05-30

I've somehow made it this far through life without actually seeing Little Shop, and I was the voice of Audrey 2 in my high school's production. The thing about this is it's sort of an adult-crowdsourced Axe Cop, and not just because of the dinosaur cop. The 80s aesthetic is cool icing on the cake (except for the tracking), but the majority of it is just sort of Mel Brooks-ian humor that would just be funny no matter what, kind of like Iron Sky (again not just because of the Nazis) was.

As for Super Turbo Atomic Mega Rabbit, I thought that was a pretty cool use of tracking, as was that trailer for Strafe, because STAMR looks like an 80s/early 90s cartoon and Strafe looks like a mid-90s Quake clone. I don't know what software they're using (aftereffects maybe?) but it looks really good, meaning Asylum in 2010 good, which isn't great, but the only explanation would be that someone decided it was a better idea to record a midnight movie on VHS instead of DVRing it in 2010 and then accidentally left the VHS out in the sun. You'd think someone working on what's otherwise a stellar 30 minutes would've said "hey wait a minute.."

Gmork - 2015-05-30

Would have been 1000x better if it was a Kavinsky movie.

Prickly Pete - 2015-05-30

It's pandering, but it's pandering to me, so I like it.

Jimmy Labatt - 2015-05-30

Exactly what I was thinking

duck&cover - 2015-05-30

It's the little touches, like the "Laser Unicorn" logo, that make me laugh.

Aelric - 2015-05-30

It's certainly better than I expected, I'll give it that.

Nikon - 2015-05-30

I would not mind more of this. Here's five well-earned stars.

fedex - 2015-05-30

TRI-CER-A-COP!

bopeton - 2015-05-30

30 minutes of my evening well-spent.

Sputum - 2015-05-30

I will agree to enjoy this, but only on the condition that the whole retro 80s craze finally starts to wind down.

This is coming from a guy who was in a synth pop cover band in high school.

BHWW - 2015-05-31

This was something of a hit at Cannes where it was shown a part of the festival's "Directors' Fortnight" section and a feature-length version is supposed to be in development after the director made the rounds of Hollywood making the pitch.

infinite zest - 2015-05-31

And Cannes brutally booed the new Gus Van Sant. Like actually booed. Is this some kind of sign? Sorry Gus, you're cool and all in real life but you haven't made a good movie since To Die For and that was 20 years ago. The strippers you like to watch at Mary's club are younger than that movie!

Nominal - 2018-11-26

This movie was bottom of the barrel wacky phoney 80s "tribute". Check out Turbo Kid instead.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-11-28

Turbo Kid really is superior to this, but that's not going to stop me from defending Kung Fury, which I am doing right now.

Nominal - 2019-12-01

This was some 12 year old Newgrounds kiddie's stab at 80s "tribute" with a budget.
