Pete, do you really like this shit?

yogarfield - 2015-06-02

I GOT BUGS ON MY BO-SACK

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

It's just fun. It's not about how good the special effects are, or the acting, or the writing; it's about how hard they try just to entertain. How easy would it be just to put out a press release of all the acts? Instead they slap a green wig on someone and have him talk in a funny robot voice for half an hour. I admire the spirit of it. Yeah I really like this shit, and if I didn't just change jobs I'd go to the Gathering again this year. I've been twice and it's the happiest place on earth.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-02

Clearly more genuine artistic merit than Lady Gaga or Aerosmith or KISS.

I'd add Animal Collective to that list, too, but that's just me.

yogarfield - 2015-06-02

Fair enough. You've come a long way, baby.

infinite zest - 2015-06-02

Heh.. I said that the hipster looking guy in the Juggalos for Jesus video was as out of place as Panda Bear at the GoTJ too. It's only a matter of time before ICP plays Primavera..

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

By what definition, at all, am I comparable to a racist? I don't hate non-Juggalos because they aren't Juggalos. I don't think non-Juggalos are inferior to Juggalos. Idk what you think a racist is but those are kinda pivotal points, yes?

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

Replied to the wrong thread. Will copy and paste to the appropriate one.

infinite zest - 2015-06-02

Isn't Flosstradamus kind of like Girl Talk in that it's dumb trap/EDM that hipsters like ironically? Let's start a pool on who gets the most Faygo thrown at them: Puddle of Mudd or Flossradamus, or anything else that doesn't sound exactly like ICP

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

I don't know a thing about Flosstradamus, but judging by the clips here, I'm thinking they would go down fine with Juggalos. Particularly if Violent J and the other one say they're cool.

Puddle of Mudd, however, they are getting fucking murdered. I am actually half considering going to GoTJ this year just to see what happens. I am not willing to spend two hundred bucks for that, though - Pete, if you are reading this, do you know if ICP offers discounted tickets for non-juggalos? Press Passes, military discounts, or just an observation booth, like boy bands sometimes offer for chaperoning parents?

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

Oh man, TripleSix throwing a party with, what I can only assume is Pedobear (?)! She's so hot; any "bevy" vetted by her is going to be something special. Also, Matt Hardy! Yay! Is he a guest wrestler, or is he actually working for JCW now?

18:20 - is that... is that the fat dude from Lost?

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

Puke. The idea of discounted tickets for non-Juggalos bums me out. They don't do that, but they do welcome non-Juggalos to come and participate. It's one of the few things I disagree with ICP on which is that in my mind, I don't want anyone there who's not a Juggalo (aside from vendors and security and performers and shit, obviously). We're not zoo animals.

As for who's gonna get stuff thrown at them, there's very little predicting. Puddle Of Mudd will be fine, I think. It really depends more on how the performance is than what the music is. One of the years I was there, the media was creaming themselves going, "Ooooh man, MC Hammer's gonna get it sooo bad!" and of course he killed it.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

See? What have I been telling you all along, Pete? Juggalos are a cult. They're xenophobic and racist against non-Juggalos - yeah, sure, they're really accepting *of juggalos*. Anyone can be a juggalo, regardless of skintone, gender, or fatness! But if you're NOT a juggalo - if you're "mainstream" or otherwise outside of The Family - then they don't want anything to fucking do with you.

This is classic cult behavior. Isolate and turn members against the outside world, so that only The Group remains.

Sugar Slam is trying to make to make it look like this whole "In the Future, There Will Be Juggalos" thing is a big joke, or maybe even a Bill & Ted reference. But as a matter of fact, that is EXACTLY what juggalos believe. They want to be the next Mormons, and the way society is going, they will be.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

On a related note, I can't believe they let fucking Ill Nino play their festival. Just rename GoTJ to "Dinosaurs of NuMetal" and get it over with!

Two Jar Slave - 2015-06-02

I don't know any of these bands, and my opinion about ICP hasn't changed since I watched Big Money Hustlas with my brother when we were teens: the clowns are pretty dumb but have a definite charisma best enjoyed at 3am. But as for non-Juggalos being denied from the event, I can certainly appreciate that. It's not cultish or bigoted - it's self-protective. Being on display, like zoo animals as Pete said, really kills the joy of being part of a sub-culture, especially a sub-culture that's on the lower end of the social totem pole.

My friends and I played Dungeons and Dragons for years, and sometimes we'd go to public tournaments and get all dressed up and everything. I would GM for tables of strangers, putting on little voices and acting out scenes with them, and it was great fun because those strangers were part of that culture; they got it, they were reacting to it in a positive, entertained way. But the few times when non-RPers would wander into the building and watch from the sidelines, wow, you could feel the energy in the room deflate into embarrassed costume-tweaking and ironic "I know this is all a big joke too" comments. The whole thing became self-conscious of its own absurdity, instead of feeling free to embrace that absurdity for fun. I bet it's the same with the Juggalos, because at bottom they're all self-conscious young men. Otherwise they wouldn't be goddamn Juggalos.

So, yeah, ban the Noggalos from the Gathering. And leave my costumed D&D tourneys the fuck alone.

infinite zest - 2015-06-02

A lot of my assumption is what they did to Tia Tequilla some years back.. but then again that's Tia Tequilla. Like, at the time I didn't wish her any harm, but now that she's basically a Nazi or something, yeah. Make her bleed. Juggalos just had spider sense on that one. But there were some other bands more recently that got booed relentlessly, like Static X and Fear Factory.

Listening to a bit of Flosstradamus I might have been wrong in my Girl Talk comparison. They used to play in Portland a lot and I think what I saw was just a DJ set (in case you don't know Girl Talk he's known for his mashups, mixing a band like Pavement with 666 Mafia.) If anything, they're more like another artist on Mad Decent, Riff Raff, so I could see them fitting in, sorta. It's kind of a parody of Triple 6, but not in a Weird Al type of way.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

That's all well and good, but you're just giving reasons as to why it's g̲o̲o̲d̲ p̲o̲l̲i̲c̲y̲ to be xenophobic and exclusionary, rather than disputing the factual accuracy of my claims. Indeed, by ADMITTING to the presence of xenophobia and exclusionary behavior within the juggalo community, you are conceding to the points I made!

Embracing cult behavior MAY INDEED be the best thing to do, Mr Two Jar, and we could certainly debate that topic... but nevertheless, cult behavior is what it is.

infinite zest - 2015-06-02

That being said I'd go to this if I still lived in the midwest. I remember seeing the informercials on TV before they were even online (I think) but my wife and I decided on Pitchfork instead. Thanks to Lyme disease, our friends that were going bailed and we were stuck staying at a Doubletree down in the commercial district near Chinatown a million miles away from anything, and mostly just walked aimlessly around hearing Deerhunter drown out Cat Power drown out whomever else. Besides the awesomeness of Slint playing all of Spiderland, I tuned the rest out and we just sat on the grass playing poker. GoTJ sounds like a lot more fun.

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

Oooooh my God Homer that is such nonsense. It's called The Gathering Of The JUGGALOS. Its a place for Juggalos to come together and do Juggalo shit. Racist against non-Juggalos? Exclusionary? I said I didn't want them at the Gathering, not that I don't want them to exist on Earth. It's not "If you aren't a Juggalo then fuck you," it's "If you're not a Juggalo then do something else that weekend instead of gawking at me." Either you recognize the difference there and you're just trying to fuck with me or you have no perspective.

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

Also, that isn't some card of Juggalo prime directive or anything, that's just my personal beliefs. I fuckin said that ICP themselves encourage outside people coming. It has nothing to do with being a Juggalo, it's just my point of view on people who go to things who don't even like the thing.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-06-02

Well EvilHomer, I don't think there's any argument between us. I was responding specifically to Pete's point about it feeling crappy to be 'on display' while trying to enjoy a niche form of amusement. I'm not really interested in debating whether ICP is a cult, in terms of instilling unquestioning loyalty toward Shaggy2Dope and the other one, or scamming members out of their money, or other cult-like actions. It seems like you want to argue that ICP is a cult, and that's fine. I really have no opinion about it. I do have the opinion that people with niche interests should be allowed to enjoy them without being gawked at by outsiders (obviously!). So, members should be aware that outside attention can kill their enjoyment, and they should decide whether they want to keep their events private or not. No different from, say, your local S&M club deciding not to showcase their sex play to the general public; being on display would hurt the club. Not every private club is a cult, and not every niche activity can be shared with the public. Pete was, I think, just voicing that opinion, so I chimed in with a similar experience from another realm of culture to support him. Like I said, nothing to see here. Move along.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

>> I said I didn't want them at the Gathering, not that I don't want them to exist on Earth.

Well obviously! I never said juggalos were *genocidal*, Pete, just that they were xenophobic and exclusionary, two of the traits commonly associated with cults. That's all, no need to read anything else into it.

In fact, knowing the way ICP operates, I'd argue that genocide for non-juggalos would be the LAST thing they'd want; both because turning non-juggalos into new fans is necessary for revenue growth, and because a large part of identification with a group depends upon the presence of an Other against which to contrast yourself. Stop non-juggalos from existing on Earth, and most of the fun would go out of being a juggalo!

>> I fuckin said that ICP themselves encourage outside people coming.

Well yes, of course they do. Again, ICP needs to attract new fans in order to drive revenue growth, and even if J can't convert absolutely everybody who shows up at GoTJ, failed converts have just as much money to spend on stuff as the hardcore Ninjas do.

On the other hand, ICP most certainly discourages juggalos from associating with heathens. One cannot go but two minutes listening to a Violent J sermon without hearing all sorts of smack-talk about "mainstream fans" or "fakeass juffalos" or whatever the fuck. Being "The World's Most Hated Band" isn't a bad thing; for ICP it's a mark of honor, and treated as a source of pride.

Your own reluctance to accept non-juggalos into The Gathering is, I'd argue, a symptom of this mindset. We wouldn't show up to gawk at you or laugh at you, Pete! You're our friend, we would never do that. We'd show up because it's fun, albeit only fun enough to warrant sixty bucks, tops.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

Like, consider the following scenario. Let's say we were all going to go see GWAR playing at a medium-sized club in Virginia. Would you get worried that maybe someone who's NOT a diehard Bohab might show up, then stand in the back for a couple hours, not because he likes GWAR, but just because it's Friday and he feels like getting out of the house?

Of course not! Because that would be insane.

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

You can't compare it to the Bohabs because you can't compare it to anything. It's a unique case, otherwise there would be a Gathering Of The Bohabs with 10,000+ fans in attendance each year for 15 years. There's not a Gathering Of The Anything, let alone a Gathering Of The Anything that is universally hated as Juggalos. So what the fuck do you want ICP to say? If it's "Don't come if you're not a Juggalo" then they're cult leaders. If it's "You're welcome even if you aren't a Juggalo" then they're just trying to convert more people into the cult. I get it, there's nothing they could ever say or do to prove to you that they're just trying to make people happy. I've been hearing it for 15 years so it means nothing to me. The sick thing in my case is that I love it so much that I'm willing to engage in arguments about it just so I have an outlet to talk about it. That's on me.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

>> So what the fuck do you want ICP to say?

That's a good question! I guess I'd have to say: I don't really WANT them to say anything differently. I personally have no desire to control their lives or to control their business, and I would not dictate to them how to run their own cult, even if I could. I'm just pointing out facts here, not trying to socially-engineer juggalos to suit my own agendas.

However, if you mean, "what could the ICP say to convince me that they are not a cult?", then that question is a little bit more complicated! It is not ONE thing that the ICP does which makes them cult-leaders, rather, it is the entire package: the way they present themselves, and the psycho/sociological tricks that they use to shape their followers. ICP would have to stop talking about Family, stop talking about mainstream fans, stop talking about God, hell even stop talking about *juggalos*. Just use phrases like, "rock and roll fans", or "hip hop enthusiasts", to describe people attending their concerts, like any other non-cult band might do.

Of course, ICP aren't going to do that, their fans would hate it, and it wouldn't be nearly as much fun for ANYONE, myself included! They're a cult, they're happy being a cult, and quite frankly, that's good enough for me. Again, all I am doing here is pointing out f̲a̲c̲t̲s̲, helping to raise awareness and generate discussion. What you do with the facts, how you choose to interpret them, that is entirely your call.

chumbucket - 2015-06-02

Nice one! Also, 12:01 crawl info about the auction

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

I will never stop being amused by the fact that GoTJ is introduced to Juggalos each year, completely unironically, with a fucking infomercial. They really are KISS, aren't they?

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-06-02

And so another year has passed and the Summer officially begins!

chumbucket - 2015-06-02

Ah a fresh GOTJ advert. The mark of another fine year of poeTV.

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

Let me add this nugget too: If you're familiar with ICP's "Big Money" series of movies, I happen to know that the upcoming THIRD part will be called "Big Money Thrusters" set in outer space. Will it look just like this? Here's hoping!

Two Jar Slave - 2015-06-02

Hustlas... Rustlers... Thrusters... their film sequels are determined by alphabetically sequent entries in their rhyme dictionary, aren't they? Their next will be Big Money Uppers, a rap-n-wrasslin' parody of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.

Prickly Pete - 2015-06-02

Also, idk if you guys realize this, but Sugar Slam (the chick that's in all of these videos) is Violent J's wife.

jangbones - 2015-06-02

oh, GOTJ forums past have performed intensive study of Sugar Slam, including speculation on her body odor

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-02

I didn't realize they were formally married now.

She kind of reminds me of Toni Basil.

infinite zest - 2015-06-02

She reminds me of a certain Joe Jackson song..

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

Sugar Slam's body odor is my favorite juggalo-based meme.

I still bet she smells nice. Like cotton candy, or fresh Rock n' Rye.

misterbuns - 2015-06-02

how does she find his dick

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-03

Mr. Buns, ever seen a video about folding dough?

Man, this has become too corporate.

Also, RIP Ass Dan.

RIP Ass Dan.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-06-02

So apparently, they're not shooting anyone out of a cannon this year. :(

Spaceman Africa - 2015-06-02

I'm always glad when these videos come out, they've been a summer staple ever since 2009. I also like how they get more elaborate every following year.

Needtodestroy - 2015-06-02

SEMINARS?
SEMINARS?!

SEMINARS ABOUT WHAT?!

HOW AM I THE FIRST PERSON TO COMMENT ABOUT THIS?!

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-03

They've been doing it for years. Here's an example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRNQCrRnpX8

Spit Spingola - 2015-06-03

These videos always feel like watching an infomercial from a strange foreign land. Moments of familiarity pop up, like the Doctor Who time travel effects and hey Puddle of Mudd are still boring and Judah Friedlander's there for some reason but mostly you're just scratching your head and wondering what happened to make so many bands like clown make-up so much. Wow, their culture and values are fascinatingly different! Somebody put a couple of Juggalo clown children with the multi-ethnic group of kids singing "It's A Small World After All" (even though they will scream-rap the lyrics).

I have to say, though, GOTJ is probably a lot of fun if this kind of stuff is your thing.

countvelcro - 2015-06-03

pretty sure I got drunk with one of these guys the other day.
