OH SHIT!

I am pleased as hell with this. It's actually SURPRISINGLY close to the plot of my own X-Com fanfics! NOT SAYING THEY STOLE THE IDEA FROM ME but i expect to be compensated anyway

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

(according to my own XCom fanfiction, shortly after the events of Enemy Unknown, the shadowy Council leverages it's massive power, turns evil, and allies with the aliens in oppressing humanity. Former X-Com operatives either ally with the NWO, or turn rogue and join the Resistance.

I hope this game lets us reuse some of our old operatives! If not, I will just head-canon them into officer positions.)

I loved Terror From the Deep and the one after that because they were like Battletoads Hard and I guess I just accepted the challenge, but games these days would rather see you complete the mission to see the next cinematic than die a million times and turn it off so they pretty much got rid of the two most common words in gaming: "Game Over."

chumbucket - 2015-06-02

Terror From The Deep was probably my most favorite and addicting game I've ever played. I would love to get back into XCOM, sadly I have no device from which to play these games anymore.

infinite zest - 2015-06-02

I live in a place with a 360 and have thought about checking out Enemy Unknown, but I dunno.. Terror from the Deep is easily available for free and maybe it's just me but top down gaming's graphics don't matter to me. It can be all 3D and everything, but you're not concentrating on the graphics the way you are with a FPS or free roaming game. Like, Warcraft 2 looks just as good as Warcraft 3; WC3 just won't run on my dosbox is all.

chumbucket - 2015-06-02

I HAD a 360 given to me for helping work on the processor way way back when. But after 3 replacements my latest one died and I just don't have the motivation or money to have it fixed/replaced again. I'm considering going back into PC gaming but it's such a hugely expensive hobby.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-02

@ chumbucket? Dont you have *any* kind of shitty pc? Like the kind you could find in a skip or maybe is being thrown out of a nearby office as we speak? Thats all you need to play the original xcom again, which is way better than these new ones btw. Hint use dosbox + openxcom

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-02

Also you worked on the xbox 360 chip? Cool!!! Can you elaborate?? I know nothing about silicon. I am a high level language game programmer but I do kinda remember some x86 assembly from college. I would really like to do 'nand to tetris' sometime though when I have the time, and I *did* watch the video of the guy who built the alu from that in minecraft, so I'm sure that almost qualifies me as a chip designer.

infinite zest - 2015-06-02

Not to interrupt and excuse me for sounding like a Luddite, but "died?" I'm pretty sure the 360 at my house hasn't been turned off since I moved in. It's treated just like a computer. I moved out of a place a week before an Xbox (the one before 360, I still wanna say "one") caught fire and pretty much burned most of their (and some of my old) shit.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-06-02

The XBox at the used video game store I worked in actually managed to melt itself and the counter under it enough that they fused together and became one. It also stopped working, but at least we could leave it out in the open without anyone trying to steal it.

chumbucket - 2015-06-02

I am tempted to go cheap and buy a used or return PC that can play older games. I work for the company that built the processor on the 360. My job was to find everything wrong with the design that would prevent or hinder manufacturing yield. So I was the last to touch the actual original design before silicon. Most programming we use for that work is python based scripting to kick off vendor tool software that verfies design. But interpretation of any errors takes multiple skills. My last 360 finally quit trying to play Skyrim and Minecraft. It would overheat within 1 hour. Now it doesn't even boot up. Its the original 2006 design which were known to graphics processor overheating issues.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-02

Minecraft is a divil for overheating. I guess its very much CPU bound, though also I blame the fact that its written in Java. Is the xbox version of minecraft still in Java? I always wondered why they didnt re-write it in C++ for example (or anything!) once they got some serious funding.

infinite zest - 2015-06-03

Ah OK the one at my house is a Halo 3 Special Edition one, which is weird because I'm the only person who actually uses it for anything other than netflix and stuff, and I've never seen a Halo around. That being said I think I'm kind of done with Black Flag. It's all the fun of a theme park ride like Pirates of the Caribbean and little more; looks like Enemy Unknown is on sale right now so I think I'll try it

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-06-02

-1 star for not having the Cobra Man on the side of good, out of 6 stars for having a Cobra Man in the first place.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-02

If ye liked the firaxis xcom I'd highly recommened the original. The firaxis xcom is quite good, but the original really is one of the best computer games ever made. You dont need to have played it back in the day either, I only played it for the 1st time in the last few years.
Also theres an amazing free open source project called OpenXcom that fixes or enhances most of the annoying oldskool UI features (or lack of features)

I could go on about xcom: ufo defense (called xcom:enemy unknown everywhere else except US but now firaxis have confusingly named their reboot the same name as the original) at lenght. But essentially whats so great about it is that at the start you have no frickin' idea what your doing, but also you have complete freedom to do whatever you want within the confines of the game system. So you will learn and experiment and can come up with all sorts of clever tactics (in tactical map) and schemes (in overworld map) that the developers certainly never thought of. They just made a system that would operate according to certain rules. Also how the two types of gameplay interact and complement each other is fantastic.
Conversely the best elements of the original are whats lacking from the reboot imo. They pretty much only made the tactical part of the game and reduced the overworld part down to almost nothing. And even in the tactical game your choices are reduced down to a few simple options. You dont have enough scope to be creative.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

What's the point of XCom: UFO now that we've got Xenonauts?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-06-02

Fair point. I couldnt get into xenonauts, probably cus I'd played the crap out of xcom, though also it did seem a bit dull compared to xcom.
Did you play it? I'm curious if they sanded the rough corners off ufo, like there were some really unfair exploits you could discover + also the aliens could do really unfair stuff to you (I loved that stuff btw, it made it exciting + since it was a strategy game if you lost a base or your entire team it wasnt the end of the game, you could keep struggling on)

EvilHomer - 2015-06-02

Yeah, I was playing Xenonauts some months ago; got about two-thirds of the way through a campaign when Kerbals grabbed my attention and haven't gone back since. It was fairly polished and there weren't too many exploits (that I was able to find), beyond obvious stuff like save-scumming and playing at lower difficulties. Some unfair things, like high-level mind controllers being able to dominate a bazooka dude the moment the level started, making him fire a rocket inside the helicopter and blow up your entire team before you even got to take your first turn, but it's much less of a pain in the ass than UFO, whilst retaining the difficulty and complexity that EU lacked.

Kabbage - 2015-06-02

Do not play the original X-Com, or especially TFTD, without XComUtil. It fixes so much broken shit in both games.

Scrimmjob - 2015-06-02

I loaded up UFO Defense a few years ago, and I thought it really hadn't aged well. I played it a lot as a kid, but on my most recent playthrough I think I made it about 30 minutes before I said fuck it.

FABIO - 2015-06-02

Yeah I would rather they just fixed the flaws of Enemy Unknown (the massively watered down strategic portion), nudging back closer to the original instead of going in this new direction.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-06-02

ayyyyLMAO.

Ugh - 2015-06-02

i love it when announcements are so close to their intended release dates

i know LPs are a plague in general, but if anyone interested in this hasn't played enemy unknown, search youtube for beaglerush, he's quite tolerable

FABIO - 2015-06-02

You can feel the expectations dropping when they get to the alien slayer samurai part, followed immediately by the cargo cult Inception trailer ripoff part.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-06-03

This trailer has a Cobra Man, and all you can think to do is whine about tropes??

namtar - 2015-06-03

That Cobra is no man. Check out the chest.

From the trailer it's clear she's a lady in the streets, but is she a freak in the sheets? We may never know.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-06-03

That Cobra IS a Lady!

Well, now FABIO's grousing is even more inexcusable!

EvilHomer - 2015-06-03

It's like Kitana the Cobra!

I wonder if they will have an alien hedgehog-man?

namtar - 2015-06-03

You get to play as a leader of a terrorist cell? Your soldiers come from multiple countries and are motivated and unified by shared beliefs? Also, your base of operations is mobile and in the desert?

I'm 100% down for the Al-Qaeda/Isis version of X-COM.

Welcome back, Commander. Allahu akbar!
