It made his lectures about Grass and Hesse much more interesting, but he wasn't necessarily apologizing for it either.

Not necessarily. *German* national socialism wouldn't really work in Thailand (because duh), but national socialism *itself* need not be uniquely German. Indeed, the earliest national socialists were French (drawing on the works of 'le Comte de Gobineau'), and the German Nazis themselves were quite active in setting up regional national socialist movements in recently conquered territories. National socialism simply states that mankind is divided primarily by blood or heritage, rather than class; any man, of any race, can be a racialist. Indeed, a strictly Social-Darwinian reading of the national socialist "agenda" would, I'd argue, inevitably arrive at the conclusion that national socialism MUST be fostered in as many different colors and creeds as possible, on two separate grounds: that fierce competition is necessary for Darwinian progress to take place, and that a universal understanding of national socialism would be the best way to discourage race mixing and cultural cross-contamination.

It's also worth pointing out that Thailand was aligned with the Axis powers during WW2. A great deal of effort was spent in the post-war years to distance themselves from the Japanese war effort (for obvious reasons), yet it is not hard to see why, at the time, the Thai people may have preferred the Japanese and Germans to the British, French, and Dutch.
