so many questions

That guy - 2015-06-05

For starts, was the cyclist mad at the driver for texting at the stop light?

And then why is the driver mad that the cyclist is mad?

And then, why didn't the cyclist get the fuck out of there?? It's a fucking motorcycle, that's what they're for?

il fiore bel - 2015-06-06

Well, if you click on the video, there's a nice little description of the event and aftermath. Not sure if it'll answer all your questions, though.

Gmork - 2015-06-06

"For starts, was the cyclist mad at the driver for texting at the stop light?"

Because it doesn't fucking matter if you're at a stop light or in heavy freeway traffic. Texting while driving makes you a dumb cunt who deserves to smash into a brick wall. Doing it at a stoplight just means he's one of those cunts who tries to get away with it wherever possible.

The mentality of someone who would do that is coincidentally also the kind that would allow them to perform a hit and run for petty reasons.

Phone people. Ugh.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2015-06-06

Then by that logic, you shouldn't also adjust the radio, the a/c, adjust your seatbelt, drink your coffee, etc. while sitting at a stop light or while stopped in traffic for more than 10 seconds.

If you're foot is on the brake, and you're not going anywhere, then you're free to spend a little bit of time to do something else as the worse case scenario is that you're five seconds behind the light - which is not much in the grand scheme of things. Changing a cd, adjusting the a/c, finding a new radio station, etc. are equally as distracting as sending a quick text. Someone shuffles through papers or fiddles with knobs on their dash for 15 seconds nobody bats an eye, but the second they pick up the phone even if it's to cancel an incoming call people go ape shit.

You guys must have pretty bad road rage if it comes off through your internet posts. Relax.

il fiore bel - 2015-06-06

Actually, cell phone use, be it texting, handheld, or hands free, has been shown to be just as bad as driving drunk. It's true eating, changing radio stations, applying lipstick, etc can be distracting, but these acts are nothing compared to the amount of brain power a cell phone will take.

http://www.itworld.com/article/2763161/consumer-tech-science/h ow-the-brain-works--driving--cell-phones-and-cognitive-abilities.h tml

And you shouldn't be texting at the stoplight because you need to be alert in the event of the following: 1) light change, 2) approaching police or emergency vehicle, 3) basically any other reason you need to pay attention to the road and cars around you. And if you're one of those people who gradually pulls up because you're looking down at the phone and then up, will you know when to actually stop? I've been in traffic with one of these folks in the next lane and suddenly heard *CRUNCH* because someone wasn't paying attention.

That guy - 2015-06-06

as far as I understand, it's not illegal to text at a stop light here in California

HarrietTubmanPI - 2015-06-06

That study doesn't count if you're at a complete stop.

You do realize that emergency vehicles make noise right? And looking down for ten seconds at a stopped light with your foot on the brake and while you're not moving isn't going to hurt anyone except get people like you who know know any better

HarrietTubmanPI - 2015-06-06

I'm at my phone right now so excuse the typos. And no I'm not in my car.

That guy - 2015-06-06

I don't text while driving.

I do text while at a stoplight, or get shit out of the glove compartment, or check the map, or put hot maple syrup on pancakes, or consider Kantian metaphysics.

I think I'll notice when the light changes, or sirens come blaring up the road.

And I think Gmork considering it just as bad is good evidence that it's not.

That guy - 2015-06-06

Anyway, this still doesn't explain driver trying to kill a guy, or guy not jetting away on his bike.

il fiore bel - 2015-06-06

Not all emergency vehicles make noise, at least not here. I've seen some pass by with the lights flashing and no noise.

And kudos to you for having such confidence in your shitty driving habits, and for being proud of being part of the problem. I'm sure you won't piss off the wrong person one day.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2015-06-06

Not one of you has posted a logical reason why texting while fully stopped is a bad thing. Just about every gripe and complaint is baseless.

Everyone can pretty much agree that texting in a moving car while driving is dangerous. But you fail to understand that we are talking about texting while fully stopped.

By the way, if an emergency vehicle is trying to make it through traffic and you have to get out of the way, they will be blaring sirens. The only cases where they will have lights on only is while they are pulled over to warn traffic doe whatever reason. In that case you will likely be moving so your gripe doesn't apply.

I don't know what it is about driving but whenever someone doesn't drive the way you want them to even if it's harming nobody people act like you just burned a thousand puppies. Plus no matter how good of a driver you think you are there is always one asshole who thinks he knows better and has the right to bitch and moan at everyone else.

If your road rage is this bad sitting at a computer maybe you shouldn't drive at all?

Nominal - 2015-06-06

ha ha ha, scientific studies that texting while stopped hogs more brain wave CPU power than non-phone related tasks! Sending the user into a memory leak crash as his seizure floors the gas!

These have to be the dumbest science posts since "How could the sound of a rocket launch possibly travel for a whole mile?"

M-DEEM - 2015-06-07

I keep a notepad in the console. Because driving is mostly monotonous, boring and easy I'll think of something to look up/buy/do later and I'll write it down. From now on I'll keep in mind that I'm a selfish sock-fucking shitclown for doing so.

Hooker - 2015-06-05

To be fair, it could have been an accident. He might have been distracted because he was using his phone while driving.

Gmork - 2015-06-06

Hope that's a joke. Obvious hit and run, sped up AS he hit, sped up even more as he left.

Hooker - 2015-06-06

wow

The Mothership - 2015-06-05

Used to be in medieval Europe or the American wild west, if someone assaulted you like that, you could kill them and that would be the end of it.

And if those attitudes come back - and we all hope they will - I can ride my bike with a sawed off shotgun tied to my backpack for just this sort of occurrence.

il fiore bel - 2015-06-05

Well, if you piss off someone like this guy did, I sure hope you can shoot straight after a concussion and some bone fractures.

The Mothership - 2015-06-05

See that's the thing, I agree with you. You have to shoot them before they run you over.

Mister Yuck - 2015-06-06

And I'm sure that the unhinged Beemer driver would never shoot the cyclist first for insulting his honor or anything like that.

il fiore bel - 2015-06-06

Ah.

15th - 2015-06-05

Anyone that texts while driving regularly is a shitty person. Also, any adult that cuts in line. These are red flags.

Mister Yuck - 2015-06-06

Eh, I text at stoplights all the time. You're stopped, worst case scenario you take an extra ten seconds to pull out of the light. Course, I never run people over out of pettiness if someone gets mad at me.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-06

If you think stoplights are place where it's safe to take your attention off the road you must live somewhere with much more competent drivers than anyplace I've heard of.

oddeye - 2015-06-06

Put down your fucking phone, your in a car.

il fiore bel - 2015-06-06

You can usually tell who's texting at the stoplight. It's the driver who's left three cars' worth of space in front of him/her, and will inch closer to the car before him/her every fifteen seconds.

Gmork - 2015-06-06

Mister Yuck is a shit driver. Good to know.

spikestoyiu - 2015-06-06

In my experience, people who text at lights usually have zero problem texting while they're driving. Everyone will be fine. The world will continue on if you wait until you get to your destination to reply "lol" to someone. If they won't, or it won't, pull over and deal with it.

Being 5-10 seconds behind at a light means people behind you that should make that light now will not. But obviously their time is not as important as your text conversation.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2015-06-06

I'm someone who is against texting while moving but okay with texting while at a complete stop. So there's one. Also in most situations you missing your light isn't going to add up to much because you could just as easily miss your light for other reasons too. I fail to see the problem of texting briefly while at a complete stop. Honestly there are real things to be upset over and that isn't one of them.

il fiore bel - 2015-06-06

"you could just as easily miss your light for other reasons too"

That argument only works when you're not the only other driver on the road. Oh, and when missing one light doesn't end in a domino effect of missing the rest of them because some douchecanoe couldn't wait until he was somewhere safe before dropping someone a text.

You say a text isn't something worth getting upset over. Yet you think YOUR text IS worth typing out and sending while you're in the driver's seat of a vehicle that's running and not parked. If that's the case, then yes, people have the right to get upset over your lack of consideration for everyone else.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-06-06

The motorcyclist is an asshole, but he didn't deserve to be seriously injured or killed for that.

Gmork - 2015-06-06

How is he an asshole, exactly? Please do explain that retarded notion.

Scrimmjob - 2015-06-06

Well, for one he's lane splitting, which can be dangerous, and could be seen as being a bit of an asshole move.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-06-06

What Scrimmjob said. The practice of driving a motorcycle between cars like that is illegal in most places and he used it to cut to the front of the line because, I guess, he feels his time is so much more important than anyone else's.

And while doing the wrong thing, he felt self-righteous enough to scold someone else for doing a wrong thing.

He's a hypocrite and an asshole, but that didn't make it okay for the asshole in the car to do what they did.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-06

God, listen to all you Drivefags. GET A BICYCLE, YOU SAVAGES, preferably recumbent.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-06

Speaking of, anyone know where I can buy a good, German-style velocab?

gambol - 2015-06-06

it turns out Gmork is the motorcyclist featured in this video

EvilHomer - 2015-06-06

I don't think Gmork can fit on a motorbike.

ashtar. - 2015-06-07

Surprisingly, he's normal-sized. But he does have a party hat.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mythstarter/mythstarter
Why, yes, I do keep file on all of you.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-07

I don't think that's Gmork. According to my own files, he has stated on at least two separate occasions that he is grossly obese - yet the man in this Kickstarter is merely overweight. Also, the man in the video claims to be the project lead, and I can't picture Gmork leading anything. While I can confirm that Gmork was involved with the Myth HD project, my notes indicate that he was the team's 3D artist; the impression I got was that he and the gentleman responsible for the funding/ management were two different people, and at some point in time they had a falling out.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-07

On a related note, have you guys ever checked out the Myth community? Read their blogs, browsed their forums? Gmork was not kidding when he said they were some of the angriest, bitterest douchebags on the internet. For example:

http://forum.gateofstorms.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=540
---------------------------------------------
"Ren is such a dumbass he doesn't even understand that the super highly detailed graphics he's so proud of slow down computers and make Myth - the game he claims to understand better than anyone, the game he wants to bring into the 21st century, the game he imagines himself as the saviour off - completely unplayable. Even though if he weren't such a complete and utter dumbass he would have known this already, because the exact same thing happened the last time he and ooga released a version of their "HD" units a few years back. They looked cool but enough people had bad enough lag that no one uses them.

Way to "save" Myth Renwood, sure wish I'd donated some money to your dumbass kickstarter prokect now.

Dumbass. Dumbass. Dumbass."
---------------------------------------------

and then there's THIS:

http://forum.gateofstorms.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=123

... which may be the single longest forum post about anything, anywhere. Be sure to check out the graph!

ashtar. - 2015-06-07

Well, I'll defer to your superior record keeping, Tovarishch Kartotekov.

Holy shit: that post. Literally longer than my master's thesis.

I would, however, like to point out that those are mostly Myth 2 people. Myth 2 people were jerks. The TFL* community was pretty convivial and chill. I played a beta of TFL, bought it the day it came out, and played obsessively for many years (well over 20,000 games.) I held the comet (#1) for a few weeks around 2004 and managed to stay around the top 20 for a long time, but quit playing rather than switch to M2 when TFL lost players. Because M2 players were petty dickheads. (also, no carpet bombing: WTF, Bungie?).

I do wish they'd make a decent reboot.

*The Fallen Lords, Myth 1. Not True Forced Loneliness. Though there may be some overlap.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-07

>> Holy shit: that post. Literally longer than my master's thesis.

It could very well be! According to Notepad++, it is 10,375 words, or roughly 41 pages, long. That is not including images and graphs, pretty much all of which have been written on or edited in some capacity; all told, the post probably contains well over a hundred pages worth of material.

100+ pages, entirely devoted to bitching out fellow enthusiasts of a fifteen year-old Windows game.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-07

The best part is, none of the other Myth dorks seem to think this behavior is in any way odd or worthy of questioning.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-06-06

I hate this video for so many reasons.

The one redeeming factor was the passerby at the end who came to help the guy up.

Nominal - 2015-06-06

It's funny watching old timey crash footage where everyone thought the most helpful thing you could do was quickly get the victim on their feet.
