i mailed this Youtube video link to the nurse at my ECT Drs' practice

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-06-18

That's because you didn't get The Full Dose.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-06-18

So, uhh, what's it like to get some "unauthorized" current flowing across your lobes, eh?

infinite zest - 2015-06-18

Hope you're doin ok! About this time last year I had a big benign tumor behind my ear and poetv's myriad cyst videos really helped me. I'd also suggest Augusten Burroughs :)

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-06-19

I underwent ECT about 12 years ago and it worked great except for the nasty side effect of fucking with your memory. I had a helluva time remembering little things like what grocery store do I shop at and where is it located. I couldn't recall the location of my dentist's office nor could I remember any recent significant events in my life. I eventually opted out of ECT and all of those things came back eventually.

One of the cool side effects from the anesthesia is having a nose full of nasty boogers to pick out.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-06-19

I was kind of hoping it would be more like this.

Thanks, Scrotum. The random forgetfulness has really been worrying me, I feel a lot better now knowing that it's not permanent.

For me, the biggest side effect of the anesthetic is that coming out of it in PACU is like being in the movie Jacob's Ladder. It sucks to think you've woken up in Hell, but if you're getting ECT then you've probably had days start off worse than that.

ashtar. - 2015-06-18

fap?

baleen - 2015-06-18

I hope you are okay.

yogarfield - 2015-06-18

what?! you lie! i hope

The Mothership - 2015-06-18

I thought they done stopped doing that man.

Bobonne - 2015-06-19

As best I can tell, they figured out they were doing it wrong, for the wrong reasons and to the wrong people, so they stopped.

Then they did some more research and found it did have some genuine benefits for certain conditions, so they're doing it again, but a lot differently and less...casually, shall we say?...than they used to.

It's pretty fascinating, really.

Adjuvant - 2015-06-19

I spent a day with the ECT team during my Psychiatry rotation in medical school. It may come as some surprise to you that this is a highly ... dramatized version of what really happens.

Scrimmjob - 2015-06-18

The most shocking part about all of this is that anyone still watches this shit!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-06-18

I had a gay male ex roommate that had seen every single episode of this show since 1991. Every. Single. Episode.

infinite zest - 2015-06-19

I had a gay male boss who did the same thing! TeVo'd every one. I had to wiki it at work a few times so he'd have someone to talk about it with.

kingarthur - 2015-06-18

I've been in the mental health industry as a patient and as an intern and therapist/social worker and I was shocked to find that there was a doctor in my region who did this to elderly patients and bipolar patients, often eagerly trying to wrest control over the decision to do so away from the patient and plying the family to do it.

I'm still unconvinced this shit works at all.

kingarthur - 2015-06-18

She was my doctor in the mandatory hospital stay after my first suicide attempt a few months after Katrina and after learning what she was like and seeing the arrogant attitude face to face, I got as combative as I could and willingly took a trip to the state mental hospital in Mississippi to get the fuck away from her.

baleen - 2015-06-19

Thoughts on "Electroboy" ?

Syd Midnight - 2015-06-19

It actually does work, it's difficult to explain but it'll snap you out of a depressive spiral. You feel cheerful a few days later. I dont see whats wrong using it in elderly or bipolar patients if it works. Pregnant, too. It lets you cut back on meds or stop them altogether. Forcing someone to do it to exert control over them would be shitty. The procedure doesn't hurt or anything but it is highly undignified and would be terrifying if you weren't expecting it, its like getting surgery minus the surgery. Doesnt really bother me though, I get ketamine before and shortbread cookies afterwards.

I pretend I'm getting executed, "I'll get my revenge ahahaha this Halloween" and I should do the line @1:55 "You'd better crank it up to full power doc, if you're gonna try to stop me!"

Pillager - 2015-06-19

Syd, best of luck. May your next video be cosplay as Marv from Sin City.

fedex - 2015-06-19

Well, i am glad to hear I am not the only damaged goods on here

baleen - 2015-06-20

The POE Network has long been host to a thriving population of depressives and schizos. Depression reprezent!!!

fluffy - 2015-06-19

So wait ECT is still a thing?

pyslexic dharmacist - 2015-06-21

Still a thing, nothing like this, and apparently the only reason it's not used more is because insurance companies don't want to pay for general anesthesia. If you think memory loss is bad, equivalently effective drugs significantly raise your risk of death, ffs.

Syd Midnight - 2015-06-22

My doctor gave ketamine a try and it worked really well on me as a general anesthetic, I feel they take plenty of safety precautions and all. But it's also extremely creepy, both everything leading up to the process itself and also the "waking up in a k-hole in a hospital" part.

Actually its kind of fun waking up in the hospital in a k-hole and finding out that you haven't fucked up or done anything wrong, you're OK and you can have cookies and take the bus home in an hour or two, cause you're not under arrest or tied down or anything. That usually cheers me up a bit.
