And to think the government is now run by the gaystapo!

Great and timely documentary. Thanks.

>> Historians documented multiple abuses — from the wiretapping of civil rights leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr., to the harassment of political dissidents — during his 37-year tenure as the country’s premier law enforcement officer. “What he was doing was reprehensible — and doesn’t represent American values,” Cohen added. “It was pretty disgusting to see some of the actions that were being engaged in.”

I love how this whole thing is written as if this is A) news to anybody, and B) ancient history.

Maybe some Tumblr kids born post-9/11 will see this film and get something new out of it, I dunno.

Granpa! D:

It's okay, kids, granpa loves you, he's just tired.

You should actually watch the documentary and post again. People who do watch it will consider you extremely out of touch if you just let this comment stand as your official one. As an example, within one minute thirty seconds of the beginning, someone says "this isn't ancient history, this is my life." It would certainly be news to you.

They burned all of the documents they had on this in the 70s to cover their crimes so a lot of things were conveniently swept under the carpet that you might actually NOT have heard of.

I know this is preaching to the choir, but:

Homophobia completely mystifies me. I can understand where bigotry against other races comes from... they look (and usually act) different from you, and the constant visual reminder that they're "the other" might inspire bigotry.

But homosexuality? WTF? Gays look just like me. They act just like me. And the obsessive lengths that the anti-gay crusaders go to in order to hunt down "Those People". I *seriously* don't get it.

Sincerely,
-Confused in Seattle

It's born of a fear they might invite you to suck a dick and you might be tempted to.

Men with no uncertainties about their sexual orientation or who have no set sexual orientation do not generally care, unless they are a tough guy wannabe out to impress the other dogs in the pack.

Meerkat - 2015-06-28

An addendum: all the people I know who are really homophobic have other issues that kind of overshadow the homophobia.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-28

I can see how heterosexual men who were social outcasts in one way or another and grew up in an environment where being called gay was part of the bullying and ostracism they experienced could grow up and project their conditioned fear of being labelled homosexual as homophobia. I didn't experience too much of that, fortunately, but I certainly saw a ton of it and I have no reason to believe it has gone away, although I'm sure it's much better now than it was in the 80s.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-28

Also, I agree that, at least in my experience (also, fortunately, very limited - I don't have much contact with full-blown homophobes) people who hate or fear gay people don't tend to ONLY hate and fear gay people.

betabox - 2015-06-29

Indeed OZ, homophobia is very similar to, and closely allied with xenophobia. "OMG WTF!! You're not exatly the same as me! I can't cope!!!"
