The idea here is that modern love is too selfish, always thinking about yourself and not your spouse. Gay love is even *more* selfish because it's denying God or The Family or who fucking knows what. Because nothing says "I love you" like "this relationship is a sacrifice for me".

If I were the interviewer, I would have had no choice but to follow up with, "Do you ever worry that there really might be a God and he gets sick of your crap?"
He's speaking to his audience by implication. He's saying that the purpose of marriage is to produce lots of kids and turn them into christian foot soldiers.
