Needs less "generic 21st century epic soundtrack bulshit" and more Bolt Thrower.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-20

Seriously, I'm so fucking sick of this kind of score, it's just the laziest thing.

Game looks fun though.

ashtar. - 2015-07-20

That's silly. Bolt Thrower is 40k.

infinite zest - 2015-07-20

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I've been playing Borderlands 2 a lot and it's fun and all, but the music's my favorite part, and it's been that way for me ever since I saved up enough to get my Soundblaster 16. Try harder Hollywood games. Does looks fun though.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-20

Master Ashtar - they associate with both. You're probably thinking of "Realm of Chaos", which was a Warhammer 40k concept album, but they also do material associated with Warhammer Fantasy, as for example the following:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Inv0xFvLFGA/TEna3DAZtyI/AAAAAAAADW4/ id7dW--MSH4/s1600/bolt_thrower_war_master.jpg

Also, I don't know that much about Bolt Thrower so I could be wrong on this, but I believe their band-name was based on Warhammer Fantasy's iconic Dwarven Bolt Thrower, rather than the considerably more obscure Kroot Bolt Thrower of the 40k world.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-20

IZ - BROHOOF!!! Borderlands 2 is fecking awesome; what character are you using and how do you like it so far?

EvilHomer - 2015-07-20

Also, have you encountered the Shakespeare-quoting Psycho yet?

infinite zest - 2015-07-20

I chose the ninja guy.. right now I'm just trying to get robot back from what's-his-name but I gotta kill more Psychos. I'm only level 7 so Badass Marauders still get me pretty easily. That and Fallout New Vegas are the two games that I'm playing. I like 'em both but it's really all about the music in either case. It was the same with Red Dead Redemption.

For me anyway it's all about atmosphere, which is why I was so into games like Zork and Hell Cyberpunk Thriller and suck at games like Borderlands 2 or even Duke 3D in terms of playing or winning at a first person shooter, but if it sounds good then I'll get it and upgrade my system so it sounds better. I'll just die a lot. :(

Are there cheats?

infinite zest - 2015-07-20

Oh yeah I love it by the way. I think I like New Vegas a little more, but I think I killed everyone who can help me save Primm. I don't get very far with these ventures. :)

EvilHomer - 2015-07-20

No cheats, but the Ninja is a rough character to use. I picked him first, too, thinking he'd be a sniper/gunner like Mordecai from the first one, but nope. He's a glass-cannon melee fighter, which is a terrible combination and not-at-all noob friendly. Enemies scale with your level, to a point, so BadAss versions will continue kicking your ass until you either find better weapons or get better reflexes.

I switched to Gaige the Mechromancer early on, and took her all the way through Badass Mode and beyond. She's definitely my favorite player character in the series, and her special power is pretty OP - she summons a robot to fight for you. Also she's a brony.

In my professional opinion, you should probably switch to a new character; Gaige is great, Sal the Gunzerker is very newbie friendly due to his health, but really anyone you like the look of, who ISN'T Zer0 - Zer0 the Ninja is by far the toughest character to use, really there for veterans of the series who want to play in teams and exploit high-end melee builds.

And yeah, Borderlands is all about the atmosphere. I was honestly skeptical about the series at first, due to the commercials and stuff. I probably would have never even tried it if my friend hadn't rented the first game on Playstation... but, damn. It's a class act. Like GWAR in video game form. The art, the voice acting, the geek humor - Tiny Tina, The Onion missions, My Little Pony, the Dungeons & Dragons expansion (ending was the first time I've ever cried during a video game), and everything involving Handsome Jack, who's one of the best villains ever. Here's the Shakespeare-Psycho, in case you haven't heard it yet:

Also, if you like the music in Fallout NV, I made a few psychobilly radio mods many, many years ago. Not sure if they're still up on the Nexus, but search for "Radio Free Wasteland" if you're interested.

infinite zest - 2015-07-20

Awesome! On second thought, I like playing it more without the possibility of cheats (you probably know this but there's this kinda dumb email list you can sign up for that periodically gives you codes.. I get enough spam) I like my lil' Ninja guy and I like how the game sort of seems to adapt to your playing skills, unlike NV where you're kinda stuck and it punishes you for killing the wrong people, the only option being starting over. I mean, how was I supposed to know that a sledgehammer works that way?

Gmork - 2015-07-20

Two shit franchises that are shit together!

Gmork - 2015-07-20

With Sega backing it, you know it's going to be a smash hit, too.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-20

Myth is just a dumbed-down version of Total War. Don't blame the franchise for your own inability to handle sieges, cavalry, and strategic empire-management.

Anyways, this looks awesome and you are dumb.

memedumpster - 2015-07-20

Borehammer : Total Catchphrase. Tired Cliche Trailer.

infinite zest - 2015-07-20

They'll probably just get Balthasar's arms the wrong color and there will be riots in the streets.

Gmork - 2015-07-20

Except that the reverse is true- Total War is the dumbed down version of myth.

Total war has no individual unit micromanagement capacity, sluggish unresponsive controls, clunky camera system and generally unsatisfying combat. Zoom in on anything and it looks like shit.

The strategy and nuance in myth makes Total War look like the pile of shit it's always been.

Myth does sieges, cavalry and everything better. Oh, and it actually has physics. Not the cookie-cutter bullshit the artillery in total war does.

Sorry but having 3d models doesn't make total war better. I've already run large-scale tests with myth (tens of thousands of units) on testing builds and the addition of actual combat nuance, physics, flinching, resistances/weaknesses...

If you are a dumbass who likes throwing blobs of units at each other, as most games like C&C/Warcraft 2/Starcraft/Etc train people do to, total war is most certainly the better game.

But to anybody with a brain, the limitless modability of myth vs total war (and I know someone making a total war mod that's very far along, with myth units - it's fun but nowhere near as good as actually playing Myth).

I know you're just yanking my chain, but on some level I really do think you have a very uninformed view of Myth.

Myth basically has every genre covered - sci-fi, ancient japanese warfare and mythology (tengu and oni running around), aliens (yes, xenomorphs and marines), zombies, unique creations all over the place (large campaigns such as Jinn, the Seventh God..

I've made my own marathon total conversion and level set for Myth. Just because I could. And because the previous attempts by other members of the community fell extremely short in terms of accuracy.

Vortexes and repel fields. Dispersal dreams. Ball lightning. Tons of physics nuance and ways to counter.

I remember hearing the "only in battlefield" slogan that EA kept pushing a while back - it just made me laugh. The things I've witnessed in the Myth engine haven't ever been touched by another game. And I seek out physics-based and moddable games wherever and whenever possible.

I've thoroughly played both franchises, Myth and Total War - and Total War's combat just blows. Now that myth's code base has been tweaked to allow addition and control of more units on a field at once, there really isn't anything except the lame-ass morale system that total war has over Myth.

And with Myth you can script a morale system. The scripting that determines it in Total War is rudimentary and explained in full detail on the wiki. Wouldn't be difficult to use the tools that even came with the game to implement it. Wouldn't even need any third party stuff.

So what exactly is it that total war does better? It certainly isn't combat.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-20

Total War doesn't NEED individual soldier control, because it's based on actual historical combat; it's bigger, bolder, and far more realistic, particularly if you crank up the difficulty and enable options like restricted camera movement and line-of-sight orders. Total War places you in the stirrups of a pre-modern general, commanding an army of thousands. Myth lets you micro more closely, true, but that's because in Myth you only have like thirty or forty things running around, tops.

Where are the varieties of unit types in Myth?
Where are the weather effects?
Where are the terrain and building effects?
Where are the sieges?
Where are the character personalities?

And that's just the tactical battles. Myth completely lacks any sort of grand strategy component, a feature that accounts for half (or more!) of the fun in Total War. Like all streamlined, console-type games, Myth is linear: you play maps in the order the designers want you to, with the loadouts the designers thought best. Sure, you can mix it up a little bit in multiplayer, but you can mix it up in ANY mode in Total War. And, oh, yeah, the ease of modding. Total War is very mod friendly, or at least it was until the Sega generation messed things up. That's not a bad thing. That's a good thing. The classic Total War games - Shogun, Medieval II, Rome - were designed in such a way that most game files could be opened and modified using a standard text editor. Give me five minutes and a set of TGA texture files, and I could make for you a unit of steel-barded flamethrower elephants with juggalo faces and GMORK printed on their butts. This no bullshit, user-friendly interface approach was a stroke of genius, and one of the biggest reasons why people are still making fan mods for Total War games today - while Myth is forgotten by almost everyone except for you.

A better question is, what DOESN'T Total War do better?

Scattersane - 2015-07-20

Wait, is Myth still a thing?

EvilHomer - 2015-07-20

>> Wait, is Myth still a thing?

No, it isn't. There's a small, hardcore community of about five or maybe six autistic nerds who still play the damn thing, but otherwise, Myth is dead and forgotten.

Here is a rant by one such nerd, that may well be the single longest rant ever posted, anywhere on the internet:

http://forum.gateofstorms.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=123

Total War gets a fun, exciting Warhammer game; Myth gets THAT.

bongoprophet - 2015-07-21

oh please, get past your nostalgia.

Shogun 2: fall of the samurai has gatling guns vs. katanas.

sure every total war comes with it own slew of bad ideas which they get rid of the next one, but Shogun 2 in particular blows Myth out of the water.

infinite zest - 2015-07-21

I think it just depends on what you're in the mood for.. I like videogame cinematics, especially when others are around; nothing was more boring as a kid then watching my friend sit around playing C&C one player, or even Final Fantasy for Super Nintendo, or watching him macro his avatar all day long in Ultima Online so he could make hundreds of bucks selling it on eBay.. I didn't really like hanging out with that guy.

ashtar. - 2015-07-21

I hate to say it, but Gmork is right. About this one, narrow subject.

You can actually finely control your units in Myth. Every other "war strategy" game I've played, you're just hurling blobs of units together.

freedoom - 2015-07-20

Warhammer Fantasy Battles in the Total War engine? I approve.

Jimmy Labatt - 2015-07-20

Seconded. This looks fucking badass.

glasseye - 2015-07-20

Two great tastes that taste GREAT together. Sign me up.

1394 - 2015-07-20

The best part is the company that owns Warhammer completely removed the fantasy IP from existence last month.

Lef - 2015-07-21

How so? I've been so removed from gaming the last 5 years D:

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-20

I'm just going to take this opportunity to mention that I just wrapped up a lo-fi, electronic Warhammer 40k/pro golf crossover concept album a few days ago.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-20

Links?

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-20

Still tweaking the mastering and finishing the artwork.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-20

It's like 98% golf though, the 40k part is mostly in the artwork.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-07-20

Total War games never look as good as their trailers.

glasseye - 2015-07-20

True, but they're still pretty damn fun. Except for empire / napoleon; fuck that shit.

FABIO - 2015-07-21

Warhammer Fantasy already had 3 total war-like games before Total War was even a thing.

I could never get into the Total War series. The factors that determined shit were always too opaque and it seems like it was just blobs of dudes rubbing up against each other until one side fled. The last one I played was the original Medieval one, where the strategic portion was way more fun than the series trademark tactical battles. Assassinating figures, ensuring you have heirs who don't keep a basement full of murdered young boys, and forging treaties by marrying off your daughters before they become too old and have to be shipped off to a convent.

Spastic Avenger - 2016-03-20

No Skaven? No deal.
