The first season of this show is rarely funny, but fascinatingly depressing. This season was not as depressing and a bit more funny. I don't know if I liked the trade off.

infinite zest - 2015-07-30

I didn't even watch all of the first season but season 2 made me cry. Like a lot. And it was funny as shit.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-07-30

This entire episode had me laughing hysterically.

Aelric - 2015-07-30

You should finish season one. It throws real dark toward the end.

Xenocide - 2015-07-30

Season one starts out feeling like a typical Adult Swim type of deal with very little to distinguish it from every other cartoon sitcom where the lead is an alcoholic jerk. But then about halfway through it hits an amazing stride and becomes an exploration of how comedies about alcoholic jerks are actually tragedies. Except this somehow makes the show even funnier. It's probably the most I've ever seen a TV show improve in one season.

Season 2 episode 11 ("Escape from LA") is one of the most depressing episodes of TV I've ever seen. And you know the showrunners know what they're doing when they can make you feel like you've been punched in the gut with nothing more than a 20-minute-late deployment of the show's opening theme.

infinite zest - 2015-07-31

Holy shit dude I just got to that one. Goddamn. Besides not being a rich LA guy who knows everyone and lives in a mansion and is a horse, I can relate to that all too well. Except the daughter was 21 and the mom was 40.. Kids having kids.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-08-01

I just watched it tonight. WOW. That was...dark. Like, really, really dark.

What always strikes me about this show is the fact that it isn't trying to be edgy with its darkness, it's mirroring darkness but usually its wrapped up in a satirical spin so as to blunt the impact but that episode really did punch you in the fucking face. Holy crap.

infinite zest - 2015-08-01

Yeah really.. the tarpit speech really spoke to me like few things ever have since reading infinite jest. This show went from funny to existential crisis and I love every minute of it oh goddamnit it's over now. Can't wait for season 3. More horsing around plz. :)

I always wondered about the relationship between anthropomorphic animals and regular animals in cartoons. Like Goofy owning Pluto.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-07-30

This episode is basically incredibly disturbing because they admit they live in a dystopian universe where sentient creatures are destined to die because they don't speak English.

No. Really.

infinite zest - 2015-07-30

I was trying to explain the show to my dad and used Watership Down and Animal Farm as references for lack of a better comparison. The show does wear it's allegories on its sleeve in a way a bunch of kids shows like Regular Show don't, but it's funny.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-07-30

Goofy is to Pluto what we are to spider monkeys.

EvilHomer - 2015-07-30

There's a similar problem in MLP:FiM, in regards to the ponies' keeping of livestock animals such as pigs and cattle.

Frankly, I think it boils down to anthrocentricism; the problem lies with our human-biased perspective, and can be resolved by simply pointing out that, as sentient beings, anthropomorphic animals are entitled to all the same rights and privileges as we humans. If humans can keep monkeys as pets, then why shouldn't dog-furries, for example, keep dogs themselves? To a sentient anthro-dog-furry, WE are the animals, the strange, caninomorphic ape creatures who walk on two legs and wear clothes just like any normal dog-man-hybrid would do.

Why *shouldn't* they keep pets and farm animals?

There was a time when people like you were made to feel as embarrassed as you should for saying such things.

Goddamned internet.

memedumpster - 2015-07-30

So this is Archer for bronies animated by a Family Guy flashback?

"Hey Lois, remember that time we went to a taping of Letterman, but it was a horse?"

"No, Peter, that was the time we did acid at Churchill Downs."

*Peter is shown being ridden by a horse across a finish line*

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-07-30

If you watch it, one of the most endearing things about it is that there are several ongoing subplots that carry over episode to episode. Which I was not expecting, and I would say it's probably the most surprisingly addictive show I never thought I would become addicted to.

Season 1 was surprising because it was morose and sort of the opposite of what you would expect given the ridiculous premise. Season 2 is a lot sharper in terms of being actually satirical. Also, it has an amazingly huge list of talented stand up comedians working on it and for some reason Aaron Paul.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-07-30

This looks like the kind of show that isn't funny, but the people who watch it are proud of themselves for "getting".

EvilHomer - 2015-07-30

So you're saying it's Steven Universe for furries?

infinite zest - 2015-07-30

No, Bojack can't really do anything that cool. He was just on a very famous TV show back in the 90s.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-07-30

It's a very different tone from Stephen Universe, from what I can tell. It's a lot more painful and subversive, at least I think so. I haven't seen that much of SU.

Xenocide - 2015-07-30

Steven Universe can go to really dark places at times, but it's ultimately hopeful and positive, whereas Bojack is ultimately nihilistic and tragic. But they are the two best shows on TV for making me sad thirty seconds after making me laugh.

infinite zest - 2015-07-31

Hehe sorry I was just singing the end credits theme song out loud, through text on a website. Unless you want to take my reality that The Gems are jungian archetypes for his dead mother, the show's fun and good for kids and maybe I'm wrong. Bojack doesn't hide its allegories very well but I like it because of that.

chumbucket - 2015-07-30

"the injection makes them meat"

Xenocide - 2015-07-30

This is also how capital punishment works.

And yet we don't even cook and serve our condemned dead. We have so much to learn from chickens.
