Damn it. :(

yogarfield - 2015-07-31

rip it up

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-07-31

It's a goofy line. Roddy's delivery is half-hearted, as if he's almost embarrassed to have to say it.

So why is it a classic? Why, at this very moment, is it being quoted up and down Twitter? One reason is "They Live" is such a great movie, a sci-fi movie with a serious theme ("We're THEIR third world!") that delivered a ridiculous amount of action and didn't shy away from hilarious, goofy moments. Part of it is that the line is so much fun to quote, and to mangle "I have come to install Linux on your computer, and to kick ass... and I'm all out of ass!

And it's Roddy Piper's personality. I don't care about wrestling, but I felt the urge to mark his passing immediately. He was funny, he made one of my favorite science fiction movies work, his guest appearance on Always Sunny in Philidelphia was REALLY good, and he was just my idea of a handsome motherfucker.

and what i want to know is
how do you like your blue-eyed boy
Mister Death

infinite zest - 2015-07-31

You and me both. As soon as I saw the news I was about to post this same thing. I'll be honest I knew the line from Duke3D first (which is different) but he was a hero to me, and a hometown one at that.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-07-31

The line was stolen?

infinite zest - 2015-07-31

I think it was an homage and I hadn't seen the movie yet (I was like 13 when duke3d came out) so I always quoted it the way Duke did. But it quoted other movies as well like Army of Darkness and I think Aliens among other things. But I don't see it as stealing..

blue vein steel - 2015-07-31

Duke 3D line is "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum... and i'm all out of gum." Tribute, like most of the 1-liners in 3d Realms games.

Really sorry Roddy died. He made the world a better place. Something we all hope to achieve, but very few of us do.

infinite zest - 2015-07-31

I really don't have the words right now. I'll let Rowdy say them for me. See you on the other side, man.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-31

OH for fuck's sake.

Hooker - 2015-07-31

The memory of Piper that always stands out for me is Wrestlemania V when he did some dumb fire-extinguisher putting out a cigarette skit with Morton Downey jr, but Downey legit pissed him off somehow, so as he turned away from Downey while Downey was on the ground, he just cavalier pitched the fire extinguisher behind him, devil may care where it lands.

Piper is one of the few people, and possibly the only main eventer, that ever tried to unionize professional wrestling. He was a hero and deserved a full life.

Hooker - 2015-07-31

Also, Piper caused one of my favourite poeTV posts: Syd Midnight over here http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=27517

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-08-01

Downey was certainly an obnoxious self aggrandizing lunatic with no moral center who permanently changed the culture for the worse, but I'd like to believe that when a seasoned professional wrestler throws something, he KNOWS where it's going to land, even when he's making it look good for the cameras. I'd also like to believe that Downey pissed himself. Wish I could have seen it.

jangbones - 2015-07-31

Piper was not a great actor but he had the screen presence of Errol Flynn

also, this is an underrated movie

Jimmy Labatt - 2015-07-31

Auto five for this line and this movie. Carpenter's third best after The Thing and BTILC.

infinite zest - 2015-07-31

Yeah it's in my top 3 as well, although I liked the Escape From movies (yes, both of them) more than Big Trouble, but it's kind of like trying to say which Beatles albums are your top favorites since for the most part none of them were really bad.

Jimmy Labatt - 2015-08-01

Agreed.

Prince Of Darkness was great too. Escape from LA was way too similar to the first one, but I dug Kurt Russel in both.

infinite zest - 2015-08-01

Not to get off topic but Escape from LA was great because I was obsessed not with the movie Escape from NY necessarily, but the soundtrack. I actually bought a new soundcard just to hear my midi files sound better. And for whatever reason I had this weird obsession with Donald Pleasance.

My mom took me because it was R rated, and she doesn't like violence (especially the explosive action-type violence) and I felt really bad but she was laughing the whole time and I was wondering why: "this is supposed to be serious!" But I was pretty young and didn't really catch the celebrity references and had never been to LA whereas she lived there for years. It is the same movie, but it's hammed up to a level that few movies achieve without going overboard (ahem Sharknado 2 and 3)..

Getting back to Piper, They Live was actually one of the last Carpenter movies I saw (although I've never seen Assault on Precinct 13 but was watching Dark Star in film schhol years before;) I think it was only 4 years ago. So I took it as a comedy just as my mom did Escape from LA. I'd still say that my personal favorite Piper movie is Death Comes to Frogtown though.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-07-31

No love for Halloween?

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-07-31

People I have a generally positive opinion of keep dying, and it's making me very upset. I would like someone to look into this for me.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-08-01

I figure we have to pay for Andrew Brietbart.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-08-01

I haven't been able to locate Roddy's performance as " The Maniac", on YouTube, but it is on Hulu's paysite, which I recommend. The Maniac was a down and out professional wrestler who appeared to be mentally ill and lived out of his car, in the Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode titled "The Gang Wrestles For The Troops". Its a small role, but in my opinion, and I just watched it again, it's a sweet piece of real comic acting from Mr. P. You get the sense that he's encountered some guys like this in his career.

infinite zest - 2015-08-01

Cool! It's always sunny is on Netflix too. I don't really follow the show but the junkyard cat episode is as funny as anything I'll ever watch. I sort of knew Dee's real dad Don kind of. He was a head editor of a newspaper and such.. long story but I'll bet Kaitlyn knew Piper pretty well whereas he was always such a mystery to me. But I think I met him in a bar one time. One of those times where you don't want to disturb someone, hero or not, because they're enjoying their beverage. Sorry for ranting but this news really hurts me.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-08-01

It was "The Maniac" that convinced me that Piper could really act. He was growing as an actor, and it's truly a shame that he didn't get an additional ten years to hone his craft.

15th - 2015-08-01

I understand why normal people have to die, but why celebrities?

That guy - 2015-08-01

To assume their place in the firmament.

Piper's constellation will look like a dude tippin' shades in disbelief.

Nikon - 2015-08-01

Dang it. He was cool! And this movie was great. RIP Hotrod.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-08-01

RIP in peace brother.

boner - 2015-08-02

Every once in a while you just have to stop and look around and see who's left.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-08-02

I think this movie has one of my favorite endings of all time.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-08-03

Are you referring to Roddy's final finger, or "What's the matter, baby?'

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-08-05

the latter
