The last respectable president.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-08

Obama has his moments.

oddeye - 2015-08-09

He has at least tried to do a lot of good. His healthcare stuff not only allowed me to get insurance in the first place but now I can actually afford it too.

People wildly underestimate how much good the ACA has done. If I had to cut it down to two points, it would be these:

1) You don't have to get insurance through a job; you can actually get insurance from major insurers as a private citizen.

2) 80%-85% of all premium dollars collected (minus taxes and surcharges) must go to paying medical claims; insurers have to pay any excess back to policyholders.

Those two measures, all by themselves, bring health coverage to a point where it can and will do good for people. If we had a public option or single payer, we might lift that 80%-85% to the 95% range; we're doing better under the ACA than most people realize.

But the next step is not to get the public option or single payer; we need to address medical costs directly. They tried to do single payer in Vermont but couldn't figure out how to fund it, because medical costs are, what, twice or three times what they ought to be; no matter how you slice it, that means policyholders paying two or three times as much as they ought to. Whether you want to get to single payer, or if you're satisfied with private insurance, either way we need to drive costs down to drive premiums down.

Yup.

CARTER DECLARES WATER WET, CONSERVATIVES OUTRAGED.

EvilHomer - 2015-08-09

The problem, Mr Xenocide, is it's not a "liberal" vs "conservative" thing. It's an "American" thing. Mr Carter wasn't saying that this is a Republican problem - no, quite the contrary, he actually specifies that adherents of the two main political parties, both Republicans and Democrats, are complicit in this state of affairs! Each party tries to sell the public on its own vision of socioeconomically-centralized oligarchical collectivism, taking great pains to brand their product for consumption by the masses... but the truth is that on a functional level, the differences between Republicans and Democrats are largely moot, especially when compared against their similarities - i.e. the embrace of oligarchy and the open contempt for individual liberty.

It doesn't matter which corner you're rooting for - Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, Jon and Larry Stewart -so long as you're supporting one of the two major parties, you are supporting oligarchy. Listen to former President Jimmy Carter; he speaks truth.

Yup.

How bad will things have to get before the tipping point is reached?

Our next President will most likely be choosing replacements for a big chunk of the Supreme Court. That's what's really going to determine whether or not we sink into the shit.

memedumpster - 2015-08-09

World War III and not a moment before.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-08-09

Didn't we have that already?

I mean lots of countries from around the world have been sending troops to the middle East and doing terrible things for quite a while now. That doesn't count as a "world" war?

memedumpster - 2015-08-09

Nah, that's just an advertising campaign for WWIII. "Be white, be armed, be rich, kill all poors and darkies. America!"

WWIII will be the nuclear backlash.

Bort - 2015-08-09

Very nearly a haiku:

Be white, armed, and rich
Kill all the poors and darkies
America! Woooooooooo!
