Assholes put in a "subscribe" button that covers up the suggested video close button. Are they trying to make this an annoying video to watch?

"Is it that by its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way? Or is it, that as in essence whiteness is not so much a color as the visible absence of color; and at the same time the concrete of all colors; is it for these reasons that there is such a dumb blankness, full of meaning, in a wide landscape of snows- a colorless, all-color of atheism from which we shrink? And when we consider that other theory of the natural philosophers, that all other earthly hues- every stately or lovely emblazoning- the sweet tinges of sunset skies and woods; yea, and the gilded velvets of butterflies, and the butterfly cheeks of young girls; all these are but subtile deceits, not actually inherent in substances, but only laid on from without; so that all deified Nature absolutely paints like the harlot, whose allurements cover nothing but the charnel-house within; and when we proceed further, and consider that the mystical cosmetic which produces every one of her hues, the great principle of light, for ever remains white or colorless in itself, and if operating without medium upon matter, would touch all objects, even tulips and roses, with its own blank tinge- pondering all this, the palsied universe lies before us a leper; and like wilful travellers in Lapland, who refuse to wear colored and coloring glasses upon their eyes, so the wretched infidel gazes himself blind at the monumental white shroud that wraps all the prospect around him. And of all these things the Albino whale was the symbol. Wonder ye then at the fiery hunt?"

how about just "baleen" tag?

The Japanese will kill it & eat it.

Western outrage makes the flesh taste sweeter.

EvilHomer - 2015-08-12

No, the Japanese treat whales in much the same way that Americans treat babies. The Japanese kill whales strictly for population management; then they harvest fresh whale-organs for scientific purposes, so their doctors can come up with new cures for diseases! Eating the whales, like eating babies, is merely a pleasant bonus afterwards.

infinite zest - 2015-08-12

Can't disagree with you; I don't really see the scientific benefits that would help humans, since the organs are so much bigger but I'm no doctor. To me it's no different than doing experiments on guinea pigs, since I believe that animal consumption and hunting (or farming) is bad, but I don't care if others do it. I didn't know that they consumed the ones they captured for scientific purposes though, and that's fine. Waste not, want not.

Last time I ate meat was a couple of years ago when I was stoging at a food cart. That basically means that you're doing a working interview. I didn't get the job but since the place is pretty much known for one chicken dish, the guy brought me out a nicely prepared bowl of their signature dish so we could talk about how it went. So I ate it. It was already dead, so why not. And while I know there's a difference on the moral compass for most when it comes to eating chicken vs. whales, to me they're both living things and have equal right to live, but if they're dead meat, then consume, or if you just hate the taste, give it to someone who can.

infinite zest - 2015-08-12

Except for endangered whales, of course. I know chickens don't risk extinction the same way as many kinds of whales do, but I like to think those who hunt them understand that those are off limits!

This is bullshit, fyi.

EvilHomer - 2015-08-13

In what way is it bullshit? Do you believe it is bullshit that Japanese whaling is sustainable, or that it is scientific?

In reality, the whole controversy over Japanese whaling boils down to cultural imperialism. Western nations, Australia in particular but the United States and others as well, manipulate the mass media and the IWC in order to push, not a rational campaign of science or conservation, but a purely emotional (not to mention racist!) agenda of disinformation and bullying. The Japanese hunt whales primarily for science; the sale of whale meat, like the sale of baby parts, is done merely to help recoup costs, and does not appear to turn a profit. Their kill totals are low, they do not endanger any species of whales, and they are, ironically, one of the last nations on earth who still cares about and respects the actual, chartered mission of the IWC.

Whaling is a nuanced issue made all the more difficult to discuss due to our own flagrant Western cultural bias - one of the few cultural biases still left to us which the powers-that-be do not just condone, but actively encourage! As such, it is critically important that we, the public, be willing to swallow our pride and took a good hard look at both sides of the issue. The following link provides a rare, balanced overview of many of the arguments both for and against whaling; I recommend you read it and consider each of the points being raised:

poorwill - 2015-08-13

I'm so glad I will never meet you.

EvilHomer - 2015-08-13

See? Perfect illustration for my point! If whale pro-lifers were interested in having a rational discourse, then this discourse would be happening. Mr Poorwill's response is symptomatic of an essentially propagandistic mindset: the issue cannot be discussed, or indeed even thought about - even the act of THINKING about thinking about it, at some undefined point in the future, causes him such great distress, that he is "glad" he will never have to face people and ideas that lie outside of his comfort zone!

This sorry state of affairs was likely caused by a lifetime of (Western, urban) cultural conditioning, and as such, it is not something we should let go unexamined.

Here are two more links to consider. The first is extremely biased, but is nevertheless useful in showing what the whaling industry's own arguments are. Besides, if you've ever read a Greenpeace brochure or seen an episode of Whale Wars, then it is an intellectual imperative that you even out the propaganda you've received with some arguments from the other side:

http://www.whaling.jp/english/index.html

The second is an Op-Ed piece written by a whale-loving Westerner who has come to accept the reality of his anti-whaling attitudes:

"Besides, if you've ever read a Greenpeace brochure or seen an episode of Whale Wars, then it is an intellectual imperative that you even out the propaganda you've received with some arguments from the other side"

Cool logical fallacy bro

It is a toxic myth that there is any accurate or truthful story to be found between two (or three, or however many) opposing statements, because there are no facts presented in either case that are not above suspicion as already skewed to supporting a given side. At best, different people charting through the same such op/eds may end up taking away wildly different lists of "facts". It's like a 911 call via Chinese telephone. This is why linking someone else's opinions or anecdotes, however informed they are or claim to be, to support your own position is useless for anything but an ego wank. That said, your first link up there was better as a springboard to check the numbers myself (and really, WANTING to know more should be the goal of any clash of views)

I'm not just mocking you, Homey (not this time anyway); I want you to do this better. We ought to be good stewards to this world because it's still the only one we have, but that means sifting out emotional anecdotes and manipulative propaganda on all sides and getting as close to the truth as we can about how badly we're fucking everything up (emphasis on WE; as awesome in every sense as humans are, we're not the only force that drives species to extinction. This is something I myself had to come to grips with recently).
