People of Poetv, hark!
I would like to present the argument that your obsession with fucked up, mentally ill people (chris chan, nick bravo, etc) is sad and shameful.
Why do you care about people like this? The world is full of fucked up mediocre or troubled people. Drawing mass internet attention to them is only likely to worsen their situation and seems like a waste of time for a well adjusted confident person who has their shit together. What is interesting about these people? Why dont ye just watch reality tv shows on fox all day?

My pet theory is that for some of the members here who are most obsessed with these characters, they are so insecure they need an example of an absolute train wreck of a person in order to feel better about themselves. In that case your time may be better spent on improving your own lot rather than wallowing in schadenfreude upon those even less fortunate.

additional:
I suspect that making a show of fucked up people is actually this sites raison d'etre but if that is the case imo it has certainly outgrown it. I find out about all the best new cartoons via this site for example.
Also would just like clarify that some people like ullillia do not fall into the above category, he is cool and people he respect him and wish him well.

I've made this point before, I tend to repeat myself a lot here.

gravelstudios - 2015-08-21

I upvoted this simply because of the idea that some person spent so much time creating a video that was so utterly pointless seemed funny to me.
Aside from that, I am truly fascinated by Chris Chan. I'm sad that his life is a mess, and I don't approve of people trolling him, but there's something about him that really draws me in. Also, I'm fascinated by his cult following, and I do mean cult. It's as if Chris is both their god and human sacrifice. They want to worship and destroy him at the same time, as if they're trying to feed him to himself. Someone could do a PhD dissertation on this whole phenomenon.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-08-21

Because you can be crazy in an infinite number of ways and successful in only a few. There are few things I find more tedious than bland, focus-tested market-friendly messages about Maximating YOUR Potentiality For Leadership Innovatiatives(!).

Crazy people are truly unique. They don't bow, bend, or break. They don't compromise or homogenize. They simply are. And I love that about them.

snothouse - 2015-08-21

While I certainly understand that there are plenty of people who do nothing more than point and laugh (I also realize this specific video is set out to, at the least, make light of him), I am fascinated by people like Chris, Gail, etc, because what they produce (and I would hazard they produce more works than your standard professional performer) is so far outside a realm of what is taught to us as "normal" linear thought or ways of behaving.
I feel the same way about Daniel Johnston - the man has real problems, could very easily be taken as people being drawn to him because he's a "freak", but I love his output because of how completely unselfconscious and totally unpredictable it is.
There is also supposed to be a basic tenant of POE, dating back to the POE Red days, that we aren't supposed to be interacting, taunting, or otherwise fucking with the makers of the content. If that's being adhered to, so what if we're driving the number of hits they have up? It likely thrills them that people are watching the thing that they obviously find so important.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2015-08-21

fuck of back to reddit, normie.

TheSupafly - 2015-08-21

I am pretty sure you meant this letter for 4chan or reddit. Nobody here seems to be getting pleasure from seeing him fail like they do with Corky- just passing bemusement.

infinite zest - 2015-08-21

The Daniel Johnston analogy is pretty spot-on; never really thought about it that way.

That guy - 2015-08-21

I guess it's because most of poesters can't really punch down if nothing is beneath them??

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-08-21

Good answers! The basic tenet you mentioned snothouse makes an important distinction. I will concede that the selection of crazy people on display here is quite varied. I guess those videos are just not my cup of tea. The trolling/interaction/4chan aspect of this is so detestable to me that even passively watching would make me feel culpable + more importantly I just dont find that sort of thing interesting.
I disagree with Sexy Duck Cop on this point... "you can be crazy in an infinite number of ways and successful in only a few." Reminds me of Tolstoys quote on happy families* but I dont think it applies as broadly as you are indicating.
I reckon you can be crazy/ successful/ middling/ a waster/ whatever in an infinite number of ways. Successful people can be really interesting and quirky. Insane messes of people can be cookie cutter conformists in their own way (just look at the sovereign citizens all spouting similar drivel) I think you have to take each person on a case by case basis and sanity / craziness rating is not relevant.

*“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-08-21

Well there is no reason to be pissy about it, Mr. P. If you really want to understand Chris you need to read a book by another southerner, a fellow by the name of John
Kennedy Toole. He wrote a whole damn book about this cat, I kid you not. Rode it straight to glory: years after his suicide. "A Confederacy of Dunces". Ask for it by name!

EvilHomer - 2015-08-21

Well, I'm obsessed with Nick and ChrisChan, but it's not because I look down on them and derive pleasure from their suffering (well, maybe a little with Nick).

I love Chris, because he's a true artist in the rawest, most real sense of the word: his work is deeply personal, covers pretty much the entire gamut of possible human emotions, and constantly challenges the audience to search deep within their souls, asking questions like the one you pose now, Mr Cat. Best of all, though, is the way Chris views the world. One of the greatest tasks an artist can undertake is to get people to look at the world around them through entirely new eyes; many artists spend their whole careers trying to force their way towards this goal. Chris? His way of thinking is so utterly alien to most people, and his art so grotesquely compelling, that he actually accomplishes this goal naturally and effortlessly.

Compare all those elements that he gets right, to... what? The fact he can't draw a plastic drinking straw? So what. He's pure vision; frankly, he doesn't need technique.

I do not condone tormenting Chris. I respect him, and I wish him well.

Nick is a bit more complicated. I think my feelings on him can best be summed up in the following manner: I empathize with Nick, but I do not sympathize with him.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-08-21

Sorry if I gave the impression I was being pissy about it wildcat. That was not my intention. Its a recurring theme on poetv which I never got.

Cena_mark - 2015-08-21

That's okay. There is a lot of Christory to learn, and its a very involving process. I wouldn't even recommend getting into the CWC fandom now, as its heyday is long over. Chris no longer makes videos and Christorians latch on to the meager blurbs he provides on facebook.

infinite zest - 2015-08-21

@Oscar Wildcat: do you have any links to the Kennedy Toole Cat thing? I'd like to read it. Does this mean that his mom found his manuscripts and they changed it from his cat to his mom? It's been a good decade since I read the book but I remember a bird but no cat. It's interesting because Benjamin Britten also wrote a whole cantata about his cat, which was later trimmed down to a single movement in Rejoice in the Lambs, or so the story goes..

I find it kind of hard to compare CC to JKT though; subjectively brilliant in their own way Toole's undoing was his own depression, something, which, despite myriad trolls, never seems to get to CC.

EvilHomer - 2015-08-21

Yeah, Cena speaks truth. I'm still discovering new things about Chris; like, for example, did you know he came up with an alternate-universe version of Bionic the Hedgehog, named Francine StripeCheer? I never knew that until today.

A lot of the blurbs he posts on Facebook are gold, however,

Cena_mark - 2015-08-21

I miss the comics most of all. The comics are a great place to start, and they reveal so much about his psyche. I wish he would make a new Tomgirl era comic series so we could get such a view into his current mental state.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-08-21

You're dizzy, IZzy. I'm talking about Ignatius J. Reilly.

But I actually agree with Homer here: Chris is an artist of the performing variety and his effortless success in that regard is the stuff of legend. Miley Cyrus would give her clitoris for that kind of mojo. Hey, maybe she could arrange a deal with Chris, huh? He sure needs one...

baleen - 2015-08-21

I think the obsession with CWD is overblown and sad and says more about the people who care about it, but I liked this video.

infinite zest - 2015-08-21

Oh.. duh.. misread it as "he wrote a whole book about HIS cat".. :)

infinite zest - 2015-08-21

Miley and Chris would go together better than that drifter kid she got to accept the VMA on her behalf who turned out to be wanted in Oregon and violated his probation oh Christ why do I know this.

Miley should wear a Sonic costume at this year's VMAs complete with skin colored arms and dedicate a song to Chris. Let's start a petition!

Nikon - 2015-08-22

I still maintain this saga could be at least two novels and a movie adaptation. The movie adaptation could even have badly animated segments in it where the comic comes to life.

Enjoy - 2015-08-22

Because Chris Chan and Nick Bravo are infinitely and genuinely more entertaining people than the other Youtube personalities. If you want to watch some smart ass with a Justin Bieber haircut make his voice sound funny on Youtube, go for it. I'll stick with the Chan's and Bravo's.

yogarfield - 2015-08-22

You're painting in broad strokes if you're trying to compare Bravo and CWC. I feel sorry for CWC, and his trolls are more pathetic than he is. Nick is human garbage, and it took far too long for him to get what was coming to him.

Hooker - 2015-09-06

Chris and Nick are not exactly the same thing.

I love the Chris-chan story because of how astonishing it is. He is insane in a way that defies comparison. But he's not evil and nothing he's done has ever been so bad as to not be excused by his mental disability and the torment that's been thrown at him. But at the same time, it is impossible to ignore the fact that he fucking loves this attention and always has. I don't like the people that torment him, and a lot of it has been awful (I have no desire to read Chris writing love-letters to people he thinks are women genuinely interested in him), but at the same time, some of it is just so ridiculous and creative that it's hard to avoid laughing at the better stuff, like the doppleganger or the pickle man.

Nick, on the other hand, is a perfectly capable person who is a straight-up villain. Unlike Chris, who the happy ending is him finding happiness, I wish nothing but bad things to happen to Nick. I don't think it's particularly hard to see the appeal of a villain acting villainous and getting his come-uppance. There are few forms of entertainment more absolutely basic than that.

The idea that we should watch reality shows instead is absurd. These people are absolutely real. Reality shows are heavily scripted and controlled and almost completely divorced from actual reality. It's like saying that, hey, if you like that pizza you got at a restaurant, you'll love this one you can get frozen at the supermarket. What sense does it make to willingly downgrade?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-08-21

This is my favorite video on poetv.

yogarfield - 2015-08-22

I thought it was cute as hell, myself.

Jimmy Labatt - 2015-08-23

Oh god I completely lost my shit at the macing and it just got better from there!

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-08-26

The other fascinating thing about C. W. Chandler is his absolute absence of a filter. He speaks to the most base, immediate snakes coiling about the human psyche. There is no module of self-censorship, and this reveals much about human nature.

Have you ever met a "nice guy" entitled to sex? Christian just roars his thoughts on the issue. Have you ever been frustrated by a seemingly inferior sexual competitor "steal" a girl from you? Christian petitions Nintendo. Have you ever seen someone uncomfortable in their own skin? Dis niggga think he an electric hedgehog pokemon with a flower marsupial allllllll for the fuckin'.

How is that NOT the apotheosis of comedy?
