I'm of the theory that the reason "cyberpunk" never really made its way out of the 90's is because much of the creative work surrounding it, like this movie, was just so damn bad and forgettable.

and also because the very idea of hi-tech punk rockers is ridiculous, and yet so many movies like this feature chrome glasses or platinum mohawks with LED piercings or whatever.

Matrix was basically the only decent cyberpunk movie of the decade, and it barely made it in. It also updated the whole punk ethic and look so it wasn't so fucking stupid, or even punk-looking.

The Matrix was pretty bad.

Anyhow, the cyberpunk revival is already well underway.

You know, at first I didn't really consider The Matrix a "cyberpunk" film as it didn't appear to have all of the trimmings that those 90's films had. But when they introduced Reeves' character as some underground hacker kid I rolled my eyes in the theater the first tie I saw it and knew I'd be sitting through another 90 minutes of "tough geek" drama.
