Question for any Poester who lives/ has lived in Moonland:

If and when American gameshows are aired in Japan, do the episodes get redubbed? If so, are the dubs generally consistent with the source material, or are many liberties taken?

American game shows are never aired in Japan.

And what many people consider Japanese game shows are nothing but segments on variety TV shows, featuring celebrities. The common Japanese people are rarely featured on TV anymore.

Also "American" gameshows are region specific, so "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" would become "Who Wants to Be a ¥119835500.00-aire" just like "Sasuke Rising" became "American Ninja Warrior" or "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader" became "Are You Smarter Than a Two Year Old.." :)

Extra stars for the Telly Savalas joke.

8 million times better/funnier than MXC. I have no idea why anyone thought adding a really lame gag dub would improve this.

Yeah I used to watch MXE but with the sound off and just listen to music; I doubt I'm the only one. Sometimes funny dubbing works pretty well, like in Iron Chef. I'll admit I was always high as fuck but they knew who they were catering to, stoned college kids like myself. MXE was going for the same thing, but.. well I don't know if you had a blacklight and a steal your face poster in college you probably liked both.

This gets extra stars for me because I lived in Japan when I was 13 in 1995 and remember watching both Iron Chef and Takeshi's Castle on regular TV. When I came back home none of the kids believed me that such a things existed.

I am an erudite, college-educated professional with sophisticated and cultured tastes, but I'll be the first to admit that MXC has always made me laugh like a goddamn hyena.

Where do I turn in my badge?

Normally I prefer to listen to stuff in the original language it was recorded in, but this is the rare exception where the dub really is better. MXC is hilarious.

I'll admit that this is the first time I've seen it with subs, and I always thought TC was taken more seriously, kind of like how Susuke was treated and then made into a laff-fest in the American one (and now co-opted by NBC into a cheesy tears of joy fest).. but I recall a bunch of cheap gay, sweetly racist jokes and other lame attempts at humor in MXE's American dub. But I took things much more seriously back then, despite (or maybe because of) the hella kind bud I was spliffing on, as was the style at the time..

MXC is objectively funnier than the original dialog, which is honestly just a mediocre straight man funny man variety act. MXC not only added some incredibly clever word play, but did away with the accursed laugh track.

BUT BOY HOWDY the racist jokes were like, totally a deal breaker. All those times they made fun of Southern people as dumb yokels. To belittle an entire people like that based solely on their place of origin. Truly sickening and strips it entirely of all artistic merit.

Well to be fair, Spike TV was just a rebranding of The Nashville Network, and there was a certain Kid Rock style "I might not have an formal edumucation but I can outfuck any one of you sons of bitches" comedic style that sort of prevailed in the early 'oughts, which was embraced by actual Southerners who watched the show. See also, WWF in the early 'oughts.

I can't EVEN watch any of Tim Burton's works after that racist Asian butler in Pew Wee's Big Adventure.

My entire DVD collection straight into the garbage, for great justice.

This seems like a really fun job
