He wired himself into his console and activated with a voice command.
"Initiate."
It hummed to life and began running a series of automatic steps to load up all the software needed for the job. A light snow began to fall as he paced around in the parking lot, waiting for the right target to emerge from the dilapidated Wal-mart; one of the few still functioning after the Collapse. A few security guards were wandering about but there was no way their implants would detect his console, not with the steps he had taken.
After finishing his third cigarette, finally he caught sight of what he had been waiting for: a woman with an obvious purse strolling out to her AutoCar. Through his earbud, the console made a melodic chime indicating the credit card scan executable was prepped and ready. The time had come. He placed his console back into his bag and began walking towards the woman. She moved quickly through the lot, but was not paying attention to any of the scavengers and cyber-rejects moving around her, merely pushing them out of her way. He was able to catch up and close the distance; she hadn't noticed or didn't care. He passed her up getting as close as he could while tipping his baseball cap to her waiting for the acknowledgement from his console that the deed had been done. She flashed a brief awkward smile, then changed direction to get to her vehicle. He hadn't heard that distinct, addictive blip he was used to hearing....was he able to steal her infodata? He ducked behind some other parked AutoCars, opened up his bag and checked his console.
DATA SCAN FAILED.
The words shot through his eyes and instantly panicked him. He got on his RemoteCom as fast as possible and dialed his handlers.
"Abort mission. Repeat...abort mission."
Through the static came the voice of his fence, Lenny.
"What? What happened? What's going on?"
"Call everything off. She had a Card Lock."
Dead silence on the other end.....

Skimming is when someone has replaced a legitimate POS magnetic reader with one that stores the information off your card before passing it off to normal authentication and it's a thing that actually does happen.

I've never even heard of this. If it's real, then I guess that's what you get for putting totally unnecessary rfid's in credit cards.

Now you'll still have plenty of money left in your account to play the premiums for you Old Glory robot insurance.
