Roms are illegal, and hacking those roms is illegal. Mario games are Nintendo's intellectual property and you can't edit them without their permission. Now Nintendo has graciously given the people a way.

Or a bit more reasonably, this opens up ROM hacking to the masses in a way that makes them really easy to discover and play without having to do a lot of stupid nerd shit. (And it also does a lot more than you can do by just ROM hacking.)

Yeah, it wouldn't be the first time a company (1st or 3rd) has done something like this: remember all the Doom Editors that were put out there which were harder to use than DIY? This does look user friendly and fun with the Stylus.

However, I think Nintendo kind of gave up the ROM fight years ago, especially on their older games which are practically public domain in video game years anyway. I think there was an interview with Miyamoto some years ago where he praised emulators for keeping the spirit of 8/16 bit games alive and kicking when they were nearly forgotten in the race to 64 bit. It's kind of the Metallica argument: they hated mp3s and Napster but there was no denying that they got their start with bootleg tapes.

If Nintendo is smart, they should release a stand-alone version of SMM (for cheap or free) where you can just play the levels but not be able to create them, but who knows?

Basically. Try as they might, Nintendo couldn't kill ZSNES rom mods and shit like Super Mario Bros X after all these years so they decided to just package and sell it for profit themselves.

Why they didn't do it years ago is a mystery. I guess they were too busy filling those endless, futile C&Ds.
