A cross between 'I am your grandma' and Teenager's 'Pony', which I don't mind frankly.

chairsforcheap - 2015-09-24

this just makes me pissed off that chris cunningham stopped doing what he did best

Aelric - 2015-09-25

Rose McGowan never really figured herself out, huh? Just kinda kept existing, both family friendly and not. Didn't totally recover from breaking up with Marylin Mason.

That said, I kinda like the first part of this, and the sound of all of it, but it visually becomes not much of anything. It's sort of a thing where you can just put auto-tuned female vocals in front of a clip of a lady wearing garbage on her head and fuck it, it's art!

Old_Zircon - 2015-09-25

It lost me as soon as she started quoting Blade Runner because come on. Really?

I'm sure all of those cutaways to her nipples are "subverting the dominant paradigm " or something. View count certainly has nothing to do with it at all.

Also, there's still room fore an "3dgy" tag.

infinite zest - 2015-09-25

Yeah it's a pretty song but this sound is dime-a-dozen these days. It was cool when it was just Bjork, Portishead and a few others, but now every female singer-songwriter seems to be doing it. It's kind of like when Bon Iver got unexpectedly huge with that album he recorded in his parents' cabin, and millions of kids with Garageband and a guitar said "hey I can do that too!" resulting in most popular music sounding like a man locked in a tin shed yelling "hey get me outta here!"

EvilHomer - 2015-09-25

Is the Bjorktishead sound making a comeback, IZ? I don't keep up with any music these days, but I'd imagine it would be cool to hear a whole bunch of new bands trying to be Portishead.

EvilHomer - 2015-09-25

I think this song is neat! I was going to say I could picture the Cocteau Twins or Hungry Lucy doing it, but Bjork is a good call too. Also, the video and the vocals kinda remind me of Goth/Illuminati-period Aqua, and that's perfectly OK with me.

Cary on, Ms McGowan.

infinite zest - 2015-09-25

It's a bit of a broad generalization to say that either Bjork or Portishead have a "sound"; if you haven't listened to it yet, definitely check out Portishead's "Third" (or at least the song The Rip off the album) but it sounds nothing like their older stuff except for Beth Gibbons' sometimes-recognizable voice. Same could be said for Bjork, although I see hers' more like a Radiohead evolution: Same Bjork, different hats.

There were other groups like The Knife doing similar stuff before it, but Third in particular made it pretty clear that things were leaning towards a sort of Krautrock revival, and caught the mainstream's eye more than a group like The Knife would've. Anyway, it has sort of become a thing. Not a bad thing, but the aforementioned groups could be traced to influences like Siouxie and the Banshees and have a more "punk" aesthetic than girls who think that singing pretty and mixing that with blood and tits and new hats accomplishes the same thing

Also ACTORS CANNOT BE MUSICIANS! MUSICIANS CAN GO HAVE ACTING CAREERS, BUT IF THEY WERE ACTORS FIRST THEY ARE NEVER SUCCESSFUL DON'T ASK ME WHY BUT IT NEVER WORKS

infinite zest - 2015-09-25

Oops capslock. But name me one actor who has successfully made the transition. And before you say our friend Miley Cyrus, keep in mind that on Hannah Montana she was a pop star indisguise, and as for Alanis Morrissette, she was only in a few episodes of You Can't Do That On Television!

EvilHomer - 2015-09-25

"Third" still sounds like Portishead! It's not got their distinctive triphop groove, but the emotional ambiance is intact, and they're still fond of those warbly noises.

It's true that there's nothing really "punk" about Ms McGowan's song, but I think she's got a pretty good pedigree all her own. For example, Ms McGowan used to (date? be married to?) Marilyn Manson, and Manson was basically the Sex Pistols of the 90s; he's certainly no less inauthentic than the Sex Pistols were, right? So she's at least as credible as Courtney Love and Yoko Ono, with the added benefit of having Zelda II synths and what sounds like a sample from Martin Solveig!

EvilHomer - 2015-09-25

>> But name me one actor who has successfully made the transition

Jared Leto.

Also pretty much every Disney channel pop singer - not just Miley, but also Britney, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, and who the hell else, I dunno, pick any of them, there's been like thirty or so over the last decade or two.

infinite zest - 2015-09-25

Ew.. couldn't take more than a few seconds of 30 Seconds To Mars.. I guess I was thinking actors in bands that are actually good, not just ones that found financial or popular success because of their name (I'm also including Phantom Planet in that category). You're right about the Mouseketeers though- I might not like Bristina Spirulara's kind of music but it's undeniably zeitgeisty, and much like Cyrus, made enough of an impact that most of us forgot they were even on The Disney Channel at one time.

EvilHomer - 2015-09-25

Oh, well then, how about Christopher Lee? Or Jackie Chan? And I can never remember whether Tenacious D or Jack Black's acting career came first, so... Jack Black, him too!

boner - 2015-09-25

Does Steve Martin count? I went to one of his concerts and he's fuckin great.

infinite zest - 2015-09-25

If lump both Jack Black and Steve Martin into Musical Theatre, which is totally splitting hairs. I hadn't heard Martin's non comedic material before and it's pretty good, even though I'm not a huge fan of that genre. I'd argue that a lot of people bought it because of Martin over the music itself, but if something's good it's good.

That guy - 2015-09-25

I can tell they subverted the dominant paradigm because I saw well-shaped titties and didn't care at all.

That's art.

infinite zest - 2015-09-25

Yeah, but Rosie can't give me a Bonzer unless she has a machine gun for a leg/

It's funny because Ryan Adams went off on a rant some years ago on how musicians should not cross over into acting, upon his refusal to portray Georgia in the excellent Cold Mountain (which is why Minghella went with Jack White instead). He basically blasted everyone from David Bowie to John Doe to Mark Funky Bunch Wahlberg, so I guess it goes both ways.

EvilHomer - 2015-09-25

She used to be really hot, back in her Scream days. Now she's gotta be, what, forty, fifty years old; they're well-shaped, sure, but... meeh?

Old_Zircon - 2015-09-26

"I can tell they subverted the dominant paradigm because I saw well-shaped titties and didn't care at all.

If PoeTV had signatures this would be mine.

Meerkat - 2015-09-25

It's like a cross between a 3 year old and Billy Corgan.

infinite zest - 2015-09-25

So.. this is Billy Corgan?

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-09-26

Judging from recent photos, Billy Corgan now bears an unsettling resemblance to Donald Pleasence ca. Pumaman.

So, yes.

Robin Kestrel - 2015-09-25

Nipples.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-09-25

It's like they out-Eurovisioned Eurovision.

Ugh - 2015-09-25

hurry up and eat the ice cream for your head before it melts

infinite zest - 2015-09-25

I wonder if the name refers to the contraceptive drug RU486 or if it has something to do with the infamous RAM "Booster" RAM486, the absence of the"A" being a reference to the common misspelling of her name, like legendary toothlessman Shane MacGowan.

Old_Zircon - 2015-09-26

I think you mean EMM486

kingarthur - 2015-09-26

Fuck you, I loved it. The Bladerunner quote was a little edgy and the tits were neither here nor there for me, but yeah: this has what it takes. I'd like to see more. Does she have an album?

15th - 2015-09-26

This didn't really hold my attention. What has the internet done to me?

Old_Zircon - 2015-09-26

Wised you up.

gmol - 2015-09-27

Needs a "frieza" tag.

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2017-02-22

Meh; five stars.

Gmork - 2021-11-10

I wouldn't want to fall down wearing a few of those.
