These things were still around in the early 70s, when I was in kindergarten. I used to envy one or two of the other kids who got these as a snack with their lunch; my folks couldn't afford such opulence.

I finally ate one at some point in my life -- I think I was an adult -- and the mystique of these things is wholly unearned. It tasted something like a brownie where they substituted all the ingredients with ostensibly more nutritious artificial alternatives, and in the process destroyed every last bit of appeal the brownie might have.

I haven't eaten one of these horrid things for about 40 years, but I can still remember the revolting flavor and texture.

Between these and Tang, I can't imagine any kid wanting to grow up to be an astronaut.

I love the passive aggressive tone here: "if this sounds like a nice alternative, then you might want to consider it, just don't come to my fallout shelter begging me for Space Food Sticks when the Pinkos hit the button.."

I used to love these things. In the 80s they repackaged them under the NASA brand itself and sold them at science museums. It was classic chocolate vanilla and strawberry neopolitan and had all the mouthfeel of chalk but I didn't care. Fuck science and space and shit, I just wanted their damn Astronaut food.

And Tang's awesome too. It's the only thing I can think of that actually masks the smell and taste of everclear in the event that you wish to make Jungle Juice on the cheap. :)

I miss these. They were like candy that wasn't so sweet. I guess the brownie comparison makes sense.

Eventually, after Apollo, the space program became less popular, and Pillsbury started simply calling them "Food Sticks". BAD mistake!

IZ you're thinking of Astronaut Ice Cream which is just about the best thing ever.

Turns out it has changed hands again and comes in a shit ton of flavors now.

I still will always get a Space Food Stick when I go to Kennedy Space Center, its also the only place I ever have seen them sold

According to my parents, I tried one of these when I was about four years old, so sometime in 1974-1975. They said I didn't like it, but then neither did they.

I sort of recall the trip we took to some kind of science and/or technology museum during which the Space Food Sticks and some Astronaut Ice Cream were purchased. I do remember trying the freeze-dried ice cream and liking it.

I remember Space Food Sticks well, mom would get them for me, in a more modern box and wrapped in foil paper. I liked them, I never enjoyed super sweet anything, so these were better than candy or cake.

Crab Mentality - 2015-10-04

This commercial has sold me on them, even if they don't taste good.

Also, Tang has been mentioned several times here, and if I remember correctly, astronauts never actually drank the stuff. It's inferior to actual orange juice and such, but it's decent to have some around as a mixer for vodka. Maybe they should have used cosmonauts to endorse it.
