I love steampunk art and aesthetics a lot of the time. I don't love this show because it's really just bad.

The actual judging portion of their crap job of decorating a kitchen reminds me of various MAD TV skits.

Well, I don't dress up, but I do like steampunk stuff. I credit it to the fact that my introduction to it was the excellent PRG Arcanum. Before that, I'd never seen anything steampunk, other than previews for Wild Wild West, I guess.

I was also drawn into the 'retro-future' styles of the Fallout series and the Alien movies (though the later didn't intend to be that way, technology just kinda overtook it)

So I get the why of people liking it. The fandom it's generated is terrible, though consider a fandom that isn't terrible. Star Wars, Star Trek, Cyberpunk, Comic books, Music, video games, Apple, Microsoft. Fandoms suck in all flavors. It's really not the best basis to judge the thing itself.

Of course, not liking something is legit too, so if someone don't, they don't.

You're right though. Nothing good has ever come of Steampunk (except maybe Kato's tits). The idea is what counts, not so much the execution.

Arcanum was really good! My earliest introduction to Steampunk was the PnpP RPG, Castle Falkenstein, and that was a lot of fun too.

Maybe you could try playing Castle Falkenstein one of these days, Cena?

I'm a geek, I'm fine with people dressing up, but my own experience with folks in the steampunk community has left me avoiding them at all costs because it's stacked with insufferable assholes. Simply put, when you have people who are trying to be larger-than-life bombastic characters without the benefit of adequate social skills or a writing team to make up their dialogue they just become grating loudmouths. Some stuff people make is cool, but the bar keeps lowering for craft and now it's mostly just cheap crap painted silver hot glued onto a hat.

I don't do RPGs, I also don't do trolling. Wild Wild West was steam punk. It had giant robots in the wild wild west. Is it only Steam Punk if its in Victorian London or something?

Heres why..
They have taken things which are beautiful in the elegance of their design, entirely pragmatic machines (eg. a steam engine) whose function happens to give rise to an intriguing form, and they've reduced them to a purely superficial aesthetic whose application is totally pointless and counter productive. ie glueing a load of random cogs to your hat will just make your hat heavier and more awkward.
Mechanical design is awesome, steampunks can go suck a dick.

Well no, it's steampunk, it's just a notorious flop of a Will Smith movie and not a "great" example of the genre, hence why I assumed you were trolling. It'd be like me saying, "I don't like rap, but I heard Vanilla Ice before".

Wild Wild West represents steampunk about as much as Shyamalan's The Last Airbender represents wuxia.

A much better steampunk movie was The Golden Compass, which was really beautiful but they didn't make the sequels because the non cool pope at the time blasted it for being atheist or something.

If you want really fucking good steampunk, watch Penny Dreadful because oh god is it ever good. And yes it counts because it's basically historical fantasy slightly tweaked. Steampunk as a category covers different subgenres having to do with the Victorian/Edwardian age under the same umbrella.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen tried to be good but it wasn't anything like the comics and Penny Dreadful pretty much outwrote and outacted the fuck out of that movie.

I wasn't saying WWW was a great example of Steam Punk, just one of the most mainstream examples. PCE said it best. Glueing cogs to hats is stupid.

It doesn't make sense to spend 100 hours crafting a musicbox top hat when you can just glue a bunch of plastic from Hobbylobby to your waistcoat and still consider yourself a whimsicle eccentric that everyone should listen to.

It's just so much easier, why waste your time?
