FYI I added a "preying on nerds" tag that doesn't show. We need this linked ASAP

I am reading Neal Stephenson's most recent novel, "Seveneves" and before it gets weird it is in some ways a hard (and i mean super hard) scifi parable about human civilization's relationship with space and the prospects of prolonged survival on earth (they are grim).

I believe the subplot with JBF and her cult of Martians is a commentary on how interest in Mars is ephemeral, distracting but also irrepressible.

it's a great book.

Your sci-fi seems pretty flaccid, B. For there is nowhere else habitable within range of any reasonable tech we have now or are likely to get in the future. The solar system itself is a bit of a wash: lots of planets but nothing on which you could live in the open air. You don't need to leave the earth to live in a dome, you could do that right here. Space itself is a non-starter. Unless you can do something about the cosmic rays you'll be dead of cancer in short order, or your kids will be if you get that far. Not to mention bone loss and other physiological changes.

Young people feel somehow that there is another earth or two waiting for us to colonize. I am sorry. This is it. If you all sit on your collective asses watching cartoons and let the planet crash, there is no plan B.

Oh it isn't my scifi. A guy named Neal Stephenson wrote it.

PS i think this one of the best uses of the accidents and explosions tag.

I really think we need to establish a base on the moon first, so that dozens of people can give their lives to get us up to speed on all the new ways to accidentally kill them.

Is that Matthew Broderick at 1:20?

I don't know if I'm comfortable with Matthew Broderick being the first person to set foot on Mars.
