Steve Doocey is one of the first people I ever realized was an asshole.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-10-16

Did you go to the same elementary school together?

Stopheles - 2015-10-16

He was a DJ at the same college-radio station (KJHK, Lawrence) that my dad DJed at, and he tried to have a hissy fit to keep my mother and preschool-age me attend the picnic the radio station with special guest Ian Dury. It was, apparently, "NO PLACE FOR WOMEN" in Doocy's eyes.

Dury ended up sitting down and talking with me a lot, probably homesick or feeling bad-dad guilt. I have a distinct memory of him telling me I was a "roit lil nippa."

simon666 - 2015-10-15

Wasn't this issue covered in like every episode of Ally McBeal?

Old_Zircon - 2015-10-15

"assholes" tag perhaps?

takewithfood - 2015-10-15

Maybe leave the focus groups to Frank Luntz from now on.

Bobonne - 2015-10-15

It's called transphobia.

By the way, there's never been a single concrete reported case of a "man" dressing up as a "woman" to assault women and girls in female restrooms.

Not one.

Ever.

Just for the record, since that's the first thing that flows out of the sewer that is the mouths of the people pushing this shit.

infinite zest - 2015-10-15

Yeah! I'm proud to say that my father was one of the people who advocated for same sex restrooms in Oregon back in the 90s and a place I like to eat has three restrooms with three doors saying "IT," "DOESN'T," "MATTER" and that's been there forever.

Think about that next time you're eating a pussy or an asshole or a dick or the best Veggie Reuben in the world out.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-10-15

Can we please please please stop stapling the suffix "-phobia" on the end of everything people don't like? There's a difference between disliking something and actively fearing it.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2015-10-16

sexy duck cop: transphobia is not fear of trans people, just like homophobia is not fear of homosexual people. from wikipedia:

"Transphobia (or much less commonly transprejudice) is a range of antagonistic attitudes and feelings against transsexuality and transsexual or transgender people, based on the expression of their internal gender identity (see Phobia – Terms for prejudice)."

words can and do extend beyond their latin roots all the time.

memedumpster - 2015-10-16

SDC, would you prefer the term "bigot" to describe your insistence that trans people are mentally ill? There is no word for you that is going to be flattering in regards to your stated position. Maybe you should shoot for "Fox News Analyst?" That would be slightly less socially crippling to have tattooed on your forehead.

memedumpster - 2015-10-16

*with apologies to Bobonne, I thought this was Bus's thread until I went back to the front page*

Bobonne - 2015-10-16

..."Bus"?

No apologies necessary, just a bit puzzled now.

Bobonne - 2015-10-16

Wow. Ok, so, yeah, that Bus.

Count me in on the 'didn't read before typing' party for two, then.

Bobonne - 2015-10-16

I get to go and try to justify my existence to a bureaucrat this afternoon, who will decide whether I, and my elderly mother with one heart attack and a brain injury on her file, get to continue to live or die in the gutter.

A bureaucrat who, as is always the case with someone privy to personal information I wouldn't necessarily tell most other people, could possibly be driven by some measure of transphobia to make an arbitrary decision against me, even though my trans status has nothing to do with the merits of my claims.

Without ever needing to admit that was actually what was driving such a decision, of course, being in one of those 'arbitrary decision-making positions', like so many other people with power over trans people's lives find themselves (police, bosses in right to fire states, landlords, other government bureaucrats, doctors, etc).

But, knowing the rates at which these things happen, and being old enough to have both seen and lived through this shit myself many a time, it's impossible for it not to be on one's mind in any situation wherein one (while trans) encounters an authority figure with the effective power of life and death over oneself.

Setting aside actual open and transparent attempts at bigotry like FOX News is attemptting to engage in with this video.

So I suppose I'm a bit stressed out, these last few days.

(Yay, I get to feel like Zesty for once.)

Five for evil, btw.

memedumpster - 2015-10-16

Bobonne, whatever they tell you, your existence is justified. The bigot world is based on animal noise rhetoric, bottom hierarchy herd fear, and willful stupidity. Complete delusion removed from reality. Unfortunately, history seems to show that nature and causality have a tolerance for delusion, and societies based on pure bullshit and human suffering can last thousands of years. Complete nervous system imploded neural batshit stupidity in human perception is not selected out by tooth and claw.

If you do happen to talk to someone today who isn't an imploded neural delusionant meatwaste, be glad, since it implies there's another process at work against the wretched tolerance of nature for idiots. An ethical selection even more of a bastard than standard evolution, a loving monster of change.

memedumpster - 2015-10-16

Woops, poeTV hated my heart emoticon. Try 2...

I can't do emoticons from where I'm at but here are some

infinite zest - 2015-10-16

(goddamnit.. less-than signs and threes don't work either.. Wish you the best!!!!)

magnesium - 2015-10-16

The ladies room panic is made more perplexing by the fact that there's literally nothing from stopping men in men's clothing from just waltzing in to most ladies rooms now. I've seen dudes accidentally use poorly labeled ladies rooms before. They get embarrassed and leave and nothing happens. If you are concerned that men in dresses are going to be hiding out in the bathroom to rape you, you should probably just never use public washrooms, because that's already a thing that can happen.

Bobonne - 2015-10-17

Update: The bureaucrat was a wonderful human being and everything went great.

Gosh, guys. Thanks.

cognitivedissonance - 2015-10-15

"Why is the torso so big and the dress so small?"

Great, great piece of dialogue for a Tom Stoppard play that will never be written.

Cube - 2015-10-16

"Well, they're better people than us!"

YEP.

Monkey Napoleon - 2015-10-16

This sign is obnoxious because it doesn't conform to the standard bathroom sign layout of white outline figures on dark background. What's the fucking point of a simplistic pictograph if sometimes people use a different design?

TeenerTot - 2015-10-16

Yeah, I thought the vertically split pant/skirt figure was already the standard.

TeenerTot - 2015-10-16

Haha morons.
