Oh god...I can't watch for the end. Is it as bad as the cat lady from Hoarders?

EvilHomer - 2015-11-08

It's a different kind of bad. The last ten minutes are spent following a family and their beloved family dog, as he slowly dies of old age. Lots of sad music and doggie whimpering and faded photographs from when he and his newly-married master were young. And IT DOESN'T END. It's not like, oh, we'll have a minute or two of this sad story but then we'll cut away before our audience gets too depressed - you know, like a normal documentary would! No, it just keeps going, showing old notebooks with childhood drawings of the dog, showing the dog limping slowly down the street and crying as his mommie lifts his paws up. I dunno, I usually think of myself as being a pretty heartless bastard - I laughed at the cat lady from Hoarders, for example - but Begin Japanology is just evil.

I've noticed Begin Japanlogy pulls this kind of bullcrap a lot. I'm convinced that at least one of their editors has a hard-on for tragedy porn, because like, for example, the horse episode? You wouldn't think a documentary about horses would be depressing, but then it ends with a story about this poor guy whose wife was dragged out to sea in a tsunami. He rides a horse through the empty ruins of his old village, and he cries a lot. Then there's an episode on fast-food, THAT one ends with a young woman who invented a new type of beef udon dish. She invented it to honor her family... after her husband and six year-old daughter were killed.
