I'm glad I voted this out of the hopper. I like JHM, and I love his OCD. When I upvote his most controversial videos, I feel like I am doing God's work.

That said, I've yet to be even the slightest bit amused by Rachel Bloom. Everything I've seen from her so far has come off like it was a really poor SNL skit, written by Joss Whedon, ten years ago. She's not even "so bad, it's fascinating how bad she is" - she's bland, blandly bad, the blerst kind of bad.

For example, that country song about loving your daughter? It wasn't funny. It wasn't awkward. Hell, it wasn't even personally offensive - it was just puzzling. -Puzzling-. I spent five minutes sitting there, trying to work out where the humor was, why she thought that song would be funny. I came up empty. I have no idea.

I'm glad you're getting something out of this, though, IZ. All I'm getting is mild bewilderment, and John's been no help in explaining the jokes to me.

I guess it's just a matter of taste. If you grew up with musical theatre, or enjoyed Book of Mormon (or worked on it like I did) or South Park The Movie, or even the musical numbers on Bob's Burgers, there's something to be enjoyed with her style, since for me BOM was a brief respite from all the Disney musicals and Stephen Sondheims we'd constantly do. She's got a great voice too and knows her stuff. I still haven't seen an episode of the show since I don't get TV, but it's like if Kristen Schaal had a less annoying voice and could sing.

I like Schaal. She's very funny but she didn't add much to Flight of the Concords to me, since Jamie and the other guy are really talented musicians and she's just kind of fucking around. It came off as the same as Garfunkel and Oates. As far as the show goes, I get it: she's a psychopath and goes into delusional elaborate musical numbers, but she's better at what she does than the above.
