EvilHomer - 2015-11-12

I'd love to hear what Stephen Colbert has to say about Anita *now*. Anita circa 2014, prior to her dramatic heel-turn in front of the UN? OK, I can understand Colbert's interest in ol' blue eyes. At that point, Sarks was still a victim, and her most vocal critics really didn't have more than conjecture and paranoia to go on. Even I was on her side, morally if nothing else.

But there is no definition of the word "liberal" under which Colbert, or his fans, could possibly condone a global roll-out of Chinese-style internet censorship.

Tough American Bouncer - 2015-11-12

What heel turn? I have not been following this for a while.

EvilHomer - 2015-11-12

It happened a month or two back; Anita and one of the other GamerGate people went in front of the United Nations, to promote a group which is seeking blacklist-style internet censorship on a UN level. I don't think it went very far, and Sarks may not have even realized the full implications of the platform she was supporting, but it used up a lot of the karma she'd accrued.

Xenocide - 2015-11-12

Yeah, the only report I can find that supports that interpretation comes from freaking Breitbart, so, um...you're going to have to be more specific than that.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

Yeah, I can find nothing. Even a transcript of the UN proposal would be nice, I'm not about to take off this Skip Spence record to watch the video.

On the up side, this led me to discover the socialanxietysupport.com forums, which have some real gems.

EvilHomer - 2015-11-12

You can read about the group's agenda in their own words here:
http://www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2015/9/cyber-violence-r eport-press-release

and here:
http://www.broadbandcommission.org/Documents/publications/bb-w g-gender-report2015-highlights.pdf

For the sake of balance and completion, I assume OZ and Xenocide are looking at the Breitbart article, which is here:
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/09/25/u-n-womens- group-calls-for-web-censorship/

I have never seen any transcripts of Anita's speech, so I do not know how accurate Breitbart's characterization of her was (such as the claim that she defines "violence against women" as "saying you suck"). However, the WG-G report itself is completely open about endorsing censorship; two of its pillars -"safeguards" and "sanctions" - directly call for the regulation of online speech and behavior, while the third is a recommendation in favor of "anti-cyberbully" social engineering (remember the TeenAngels?).

I hate to say it, but in this case, the manosphere is correct.

Love & Vomit - 2015-11-12

The exact quote is:

I have been the target for 3 years nonstop of egregious online harassment in all levels. I think it’s important to recognize that harassment is, as someone had mentioned, it’s not just what is legal and illegal, right? Harassment is threats of violence, but it’s also the day to day grind of “you’re a liar,” “you suck,” making all these hate videos to attack us on a regular basis, and the mobs that come from those hate videos, etcetra.

She clearly wasn't equating saying "you suck" with violence against women.

Sarkeesian and Quinn spoke to the UN about their experiences. Then the UN, being a bunch of middle aged lawyers who don't understand the internet, made a bunch of ridiculous recommendations. I don't know what Sarkeesian's take on those was, but Quinn immediately spoke out against the UN's stupid response.

bongoprophet - 2015-11-12

no, they are not.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-12

Good News, Homer! The Manosphere is full of shit as usual. Whether by chance or design, the UN report in question was released the same day Anita and Zoe spoke. By the time they spoke, it was already in print, and yes, Zoe Quinn was contacted by a reporter and roundly criticized the report. Anita probably would have done the same thing, if she's been the one the reporter called.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-12

And remember, these are the same people who have been burning with outrage for a year because Anita got some details of the gameplay wrong on some first person shooter. At long last, gentlemen, have you no decency?

Spit Spingola - 2015-11-12

Man, so much politics and conspiracy theory against a feminist who makes youtube videos.

Still trying to figure out why EvilHomer is bringing Sinatra into this, though.

This is the first plausible synopsis I've heard.

As much as I thing there i a toxic, mutually parasitic relationship between the media and the upper class, mostly-white academic part of the left, and that the Feminist Frequency videos aren't that impressive, I don't doubt that the intent was correct and I don't doubt that she has gone through some unpleasant shit after becoming the Salman Rushdie of internet drama, and that shortcomings aside she is on the righter side of history.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

I bet Cyber Violence would be a pretty good EBM album if it were 1990.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

That press release is hilariously bad though. I like the art where it includes murder among the things that happen over the Internet and can strike any time, anywhere, via your phone.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

“The Net is an amazing resource for personal empowerment"

So many layers of deeply refined horseshit to unpack in that statement.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

"emotional bandwidth"

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

I'd love to read the actual report, but ironically the Broadband Commission's download link times out.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-12

>>As much as I thing there i a toxic, mutually parasitic relationship between the media and the upper class, mostly-white academic part of the left,

This is why you can't turn on a TV these days without seeing Noam Chomsky.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

People who are old enough to have gotten tenure before the massive push to eliminate it and replace as much faculty as possible with adjuncts on annual contracts do not count. I'm talking about the academa of the future, not of the 1980s.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

Ditto TV.

TV s dead it just hasn't been buried yet.

He's never going to drop this is he?

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

I accidentally clicked play on one of his videos one time. I think I'm going to donate the few dollars I can spare to a local women's shelter to offset the fact that he may have made a penny or two from me.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

Done and done.

Bobonne - 2015-11-15

I remember when he just made videos about how science was good and creationists were dumb.

...ah, those halcyon days...

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-11-12

I sat through one of his recent videos (the one where apparently someone in the YouTube vlogsphere tried to get him fired) and he mentioned the views/money he recieves from his anti feminist screeds is FAR greater than his creationists debunking videos. He also said that if he so desired he could live full time off of his YT earnings which leads me to believe, maybe hope, that he's just pulling an Ann Coulter and just spewing this crap for easy money.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-11-12

Scrotum, at least we have potholer.

grimcity - 2015-11-12

I used to occasionally enjoy his science videos, as well as his videos against certain fundies, but now he sounds just like the people he bitched about.

Anaxagoras - 2015-11-12

Why would you hope that he's just spewing this crap for money? Cynically stoking & exploiting the sexism in others isn't any better than being a true believer. It just means that he's a slightly smarter morally bankrupt asshole.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-12

More than that,, it implies that our whole information economy is deeply broken, because rage-driven polemics and outright character assassination outsell information. We've reached the point where no one even bothers to ironically point out that Google's slogan was once "don't be evil:", because clearlly a preference for this kind of pure evil has been built into the youtube algorithm. if you've ever clicked on anything to do with "feminism", expect youtube to shove thunderf00t, saragon of akkad, and the amazing atheist up your ass on an hourly basis, while a whole lot of good youtubers are complaining that the most recent changes in the algorithm have cost them up to 75 per cent of their income.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-12

>>I used to occasionally enjoy his science videos, as well as his videos against certain fundies, but now he sounds just like the people he bitched about.

Man, you're not kidding. Here's my video documenting some of thunderf00t's lies from October 2014. Go to 5:55 for some reasoning that makes creationism seem like mathematics.

https://youtu.be/Ed__AIKtsHE

f00t quotes a threatening email to Anita that Anita has reprinted.

The email server is in England,
The spelling of "color " is American.

Therefore, Anita wrote the threatening letters herself, to gain sympathy, and to also discredit that courageous teller of truth, our champion of champions, THUNDERF00T.

Yep, that's his whole argument. Seriously creationsm makes more sense than this.

grimcity - 2015-11-12

Christ.

I had taken break from making YT vids and had only been watching news and documentaries for about a year so I'd fallen out of the loop and never saw TF's switch from a science defender to a meathead... mind blown.

I don't really game, and I don't follow gaming news stuff so the whole rage against Anita and the other young lady (Quinn I think) is just alien to me.

Having said, I'm a Twitter addict and I've seen the gamer gate fools bum rush plenty of women that I talk to and/or follow, and they don't talk about games in any way. Shit's ridiculous.

JHM, this is exactly what I was saying above.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-12

>>JHM, this is exactly what I was saying above.

Well, I'm not saying that it's not, but if it is, it's a lot clearer this time!

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-11-12

Good God, I wish people would stop misusing the liberal label. Anita Sarkeesian and her supporters are about as "liberal" as Stalin.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-12

>>Good God, I wish people would stop misusing the liberal label.

Another evening in the Marketplace of Ideas.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-13

I agree with OZ that Anita Sarkeesian's videos aren't very impressive. They're pretty boring, actually, which would explain why most of her detractors don't appear to have watched them.

but I consider Anita herself to be very impressive indeed. She strikes me as one of the calmest, most reasonable people on any side of this or any adjacent controversy. I've never seen her really angry, and I've never known her to advocate censorship, unless you consider disabling her comments censorship, in which case i consider you to be retarded. if she ever endorsed censorship, i think we'd all have had the documentation shoved into our faces over and over. She even makes a point of telling people to go ahead and enjoy the their games. Over and over, she says:

"This series will include critical analysis of many beloved games and characters, but remember that it is both possible (and even necessary) to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of its more problematic or pernicious aspects."

i think she may have repeated this disclaimer on every video. It couldn't be fucking clearer, yet she's repeatedly described as "authoritarian". If it was true, these shits would have made a case by now. It's a lie they tell themselves so that they can try to suppress an unpopular opinion while telling themselves they're defending freedom.
