Hilarious and horrifying at the same time.

Played about an hour this morning. Still not sure whether I should buy it. The graphics seem fine, not sure why all the user reviews say they suck, and I don't mind the oldschool engine, but I AM pretty disappointed in the roleplaying aspect, particularly the fact that they railroad you into playing as a married middle-aged Joe American. Also, the perk system looks like it's going to piss me off (I need to sink points into Luck to get Grim Reaper's Sprint?! WTF!) but the combat is a lot smoother and from what I hear, the perks are mostly BS now, anyway.

If any of you poesters actually paid for the game, are you happy with your purchase?

I wasnt expecting much, for me AAA games are like hollywood movies; I'm vaguely interested and they *can* be entertaining in a dumb way but I would *never* actually pay money for them and support them.
I checked out fallout 4, initially despite my expectations of mediocrity I was actually suprised by how lame and boring it was.
I gave it another chance and actually got into it for a bit, it was interesting insofar as its game mechanics are such a clusterfuck, theyve actually made a game much more complicated for once, with town building, weapon and armour modding, junk collecting, seperate armour for each body part, the power-armour is now like a vehicle which needs fuel and can also be granularly modded. But the UX for doing all this is terrible, it seems to mainly be an inventory management game but you must do this through tiny linear lists which you navigate in an extremely awkward way. On top of that they were obviously designed with controllers in mind and have mapped buttons straight onto keys, the advantages of a mouse in dealing with complicated interactions was not leveraged at all, generalyl the controls feel really awkward with mouse and keyboard, for example you must hold down a key for a few seconds to lob a grenade.
Reminds me of the X series (which I really liked anyway btw) where the UX is so bad it actually makes the game seem better than it is cus the actual game is so obfuscated, you *imagine* the underlying gameplay to be better than it is as its so hard to get to you rarely experience it.

On the good side, it is the best looking bethesda game ever, it *really* nails the atmosphere and setting graphically, also theres lots of interesting little nooks and crannies to investigate and loot and the new junk mechanics means you really feel like a scavenger as your picking up all sorts of junk like an old clipboard *cus it has a spring in it!*

I kinda like the Married American Joe thing, vs a nameless courier. It falls more into the idyllic 50s atmosphere of Fallout, and Borderlands kind of did that revenge story better with vault hunters.

infinite zest - 2015-11-14

But I also haven't played it and don't know when I'll get a chance; what I've seen from the beginning is pretty "every post apocalypse movie" cliche.

Off topic but EH should I get the pre sequel of BL? I didn't even know there was such a thing. I never played the first and was never much invested in the story, but I loved the style (oh yeah and it was fun.) I've basically given up on Mgsv after "beating" it (technically I'm only 30 percent completed) but I want something new for thee old 360, and was thinking either a Saints Row game or BL.

StanleyPain - 2015-11-14

I was skeptical for awhile too, but after about 18 hours now, I fucking love this game. It's got flaws to be sure, but it probably tops FO3 and New Vegas in terms of just the amount of cool shit to just randomly do without bothering with specific quests or storyline. I've gone off on so many tangents into random buildings and shit only to have all sorts of crazy fun. Much like Skyrim, the game just feels annoying when you're actually doing anything related to the main missions. It shines when you just piss around the wasteland doing whatever and getting your face blown off. As far as I'm concerned that's worth the price of admission alone.

EvilHomer - 2015-11-15

OK, well, I wound up playing for like ten hours straight on Saturday. Didn't plan on it, didn't even realize the time; it was one of those "lost day" situations where one minute it's almost lunchtime, the next minute everything's gone pitch dark outside. Haven't been in one of those for awhile - not since New Vegas, actually. So... fuck it! I never bought Skyrim, and truth be told I never bought Morrowind either. Steam can have my money this time.

I'm *really* liking the crafting and base-building. A lot of the reviews were shitting on it, but WTF, building settlements is the coolest feature I've seen them add since - well, since Hardcore mode, which I'm still upset about them dropping. Granted, I'm a little autistic, and I guess I can understand what the critics meant when they said the UI was horrible and the gameplay aspect of crafting wasn't fully fleshed out - but who cares?! It's like having built-in, in-game GECK. As someone who spends at least half his time in games like this poking around in the modding tools and building new places to hang out, this is totally my jam.

IZ- I would say yes! I was skeptical at first, but the PreSequel is hella fun. It's similar to Borderlands 2, but it's got some interesting gameplay additions, like low gravity, freeze weapons, and oxygen-based space combat. Also it includes Claptrap as a playable character, which is insanely fun. (I consider Claptrap to be one of the most compelling characters in video game history)

BL1 had a terrible plot, but I adored BL2's plot (to the point where I'd argue that BL2 is the single best example of how plot should be handled in a video game), so even if you never cared for the Borderlands story, BL:PS works well enough on its own. That's one of the great strengths about BL2 and PS's plot: if you don't give a shit, you an safely ignore it. The game isn't in the habit of stopping the action every thirty minutes while your hero monologues about the futility of war. Don't get me wrong, the plot is there - there's some serious emotional impact, and I'd even go so far as to say BL2 and BL:PS had THE most emotionally-engaging writing I've ever encountered in a video game! But the plot is presented in a restrained, elegant, almost Zen fashion, and it never forgets that you're playing a game - the plot services the gameplay, not the other way 'round.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2015-11-15

btw EH you can sink a perk point into any of your special attributes in perpetuity since there's no level cap... i plan on maxing pretty much everything eventually.

EvilHomer - 2015-11-15

Ah, thank you Bus Aint Comin, I noticed that the level cap is gone! That's great, and that fact alone may be enough to make this perk system OK.

Also, I figured out that Dogmeat dupe glitch earlier today, so I duped three or four SPECIAL books and got a few of my stats up a level. I really wish the Leadership perk didn't require CHA 6, but whatever, dupe'll fix it!

Scrimmjob - 2015-11-15

I was playing this today and heard a parody of The Medallions classic "Buick 59", on the ingame radio. The new version is called "Rocket 69".
