I was pretty pleased with this show. It felt right.

infinite zest - 2015-11-14

Yeah.. I watched a couple episodes so far, and it's not as good Mr. Show, but I am glad they finally got to do that Rooms Musical sketch that they were talking about in the commentary.

I imagine it's what it's like seeing the KitH Reunion, or what the MST3K revival is going to be like: In nearly 20 years funnier stuff has come along like Whitest Kids and Birthday Boys, and Redlettermedia, but it's great to see them all back together again.

Aelric - 2015-11-14

For me, I liked that there were not so many callbacks. Too often, these nostalgia products end up referencing themselves like an episode of family guy. This actually felt like a new season or extension of Mr. Show (albeit really short) instead of an emulation.

Now, I hope the MST3K, X-files and Twin Peaks revivals and maybe even star wars don't fuck up by just being a repeat of the old but rather an extension. That is always the balance I hope for. Evocative but not emulating.

infinite zest - 2015-11-14

Yeah I like that too. So far I think I just heard Baby Loves Headrub, and of course the opening where they travel through time from when Mr. Show was cancelled. Bringing back Ronnie or something would be stupid, but I'd love to see their vision of what the Ronnie Dobbs movie was supposed to be, or at least a lengthy sketch; I can't remember it exactly but it's on one of the DVD commentaries, when they're talking over the dumb Queen sketch that they all agreed sucked. Actually I'm pretty sure that's where they're talking about Rooms as well. Ronnie like, slays the loch ness monster and then fucks Queen Elizabeth II in a hot tub, something like that.. maybe it's best left to my imagination but it was fun to hear about.

Aelric - 2015-11-15

You seem to have just said you are glad they didn't bring back Ronnie but wish they brought back Ronnie. I don't get you IZ.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-15

Just finished the first episode. No complaints.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-15

I've got pretty low expectations for Twin Peaks and The X-Files though. Lynch hasn't done anything that did much for me in something like 20 years, for one thing.

infinite zest - 2015-11-15

Aleric yeah I can be a regular Catch 182 sometimes. :)

infinite zest - 2015-11-15

I liked Mulholland Dr; it was actually the first "Lynch" Lynch movie I saw, having only seen Dune and Elephant Man previously. But I was also pretty young; looking back it was one of the first movies that really made me think about visual metaphor but it kind of shoves it down your throat vs. just going in your ear like Blue Velvet or something.

That guy - 2015-11-15

IZ, I shudder to think of what you meant by "I imagine it's what it's like seeing the KitH Reunion, or what the MST3K revival is going to be like: In nearly 20 years funnier stuff has come along like Whitest Kids and Birthday Boys, and Redlettermedia, but it's great to see them all back together again."

infinite zest - 2015-11-16

What I meant's what I meant. There wouldn't be a WKYK or BB without Mr. Show without Bob and David, and there wouldn't be a RLM without MST3K. That's what Harold Blume would call the Anxiety of Influence and such and such. It's natural. That being said I just got through ep. 4 and that was every bit as good as any Mr. Show I've ever seen, just makes me sad that there's only a few more. It's like when you know you're fucking the prettiest lady in the world but you think it's for the last time, all you do is think about Hitler because you don't want it to be over. :(

That guy - 2015-11-16

The possibility that you might think Whitest Kids, Birthday Boys and Redlettermedia are better than Mr Show or KitH is disturbing and as soon as I find poetv's 'unfriend' button, I'm unfriending you.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-16

IZ, I liked a couple parts of Mulholland Drive a lot but most of it didn't really grab me. Same with Lost Highway.

ACtually, the older I get the more I realize there are actually only a few David Lynch films that really hold up for me, so maybe I'm not the best one to talk about it.

infinite zest - 2015-11-16

Yeah, the only two I can think of that I'd still want to rewatch are Wild at Heart and Blue Velvet.. oh yeah and the original Twin Peaks.

And That guy, you do know that Bob wrote sketches on BB all the time, right? It's not that any of those shows are better, but it's kind of like saying KitH and Mr Show are funnier than Monty Python, which they arguably are and were both heavily influenced by. Does that make them better? Not necessarily, but I do think they're funnier. This show does a good job of telling the same jokes from Mr. Show in a different way, but David's kind of gone and made himself Philosopher King Comedian while Bob has become a (mostly) serious actor now, so yeah funnier things have come along in the interim. I'll miss being your friend when the "unfriend" button finally appears tho :(

StanleyPain - 2015-11-14

I've only watched the first two episodes, but so far I think it's great, though you can clearly feel the struggle they were having in whether or not to do more high concept Mr. Show-y type stuff, or faster, punchier, straight skit stuff.

The Rooms Musical skit was particularly meta because, as I understand it, the fictional arguments they have in the skit about which rooms would sing what were based on real-life arguments they had when trying to work out the idea for Mr. Show. Crazy.

infinite zest - 2015-11-14

I'd just be happier if I knew there were more than just 6 episodes planned; there were always "just OK" episodes of Mr. Show, and in fact the entire series ended with the worst sketch in the entire series. Also the first episode of Mr. Show was kind of lame compared to the rest, but here there's no room to grow, which makes me sad.

I know they're all busy getting emmys and whatnot, but I would definitely watch this same show WITHOUT Bob and David if it meant more episodes, since Scott's Comedy Bang Bang show is pretty lame, John is doing hard cider commercials, Paul's just doing voicework, and Jay and Brian.. where've you guys been? Like, don't get me wrong I love Bob Odenkirk and David Cross but like Mr. Show, you can kind of tell who wrote what..

(On a side note I did run into Brian Posehn a few years ago; the band Red Fang, who happened to be my next door neighbors at the time were filming a music video and Brian's a huge fan of their's so he did a cameo in it for free. Later on I turned out getting a beer and there was Brian at a nearly completely empty bar, not talking to anybody. So I just kind of waved and said "what's up.." and he seemed weirdly apologetic in his response, like he was supposed to know who I was or something. Anyway we had a beer together and not once did I bring up Mr, Show. I was pretty proud of myself.)

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-15

Hell, I'd watch it if it was just John Ennis greenscreening all the characters.

infinite zest - 2015-11-16

Shit.. I thought I read it was 6 or 7 episodes planned and not just 4.. 4 was when I really started to like it. :(

infinite zest - 2015-11-14

I guess I already 5 starred it but I don't like this intro sequence. I like the show and I like Cyriak, but it feels out of place, and something that belongs on Tim and Eric if they did a "live" sketch comedy show of their own. There was a certain minimalism to the Mr. Show openings that I always loved

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-15

Tim helped make this, so there's a level on which that's kinda what it is.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-15

Actually, thinking about it more, Cyriak's animation seems like a pretty good 2015 counterpart to the original intro's animation style.

Ugh - 2015-11-14

well, that sure is cyriak i guess

wonder if he just keeps doing this style because he's paid or if he really hasn't burnt out on it yet

infinite zest - 2015-11-14

It's probably like Fatal Farm. They still do some pretty interesting and different stuff on the side but they get their money from Old Spice, Oreo, etc. They're both getting old to us, but we kinda knew 'em when they were doing it for rent money, and for the vast majority of people who watch television or Netflix this is probably the first time they've ever seen his work.

Monkey Napoleon - 2015-11-15

In America anyway. Cyriak did some stuff on BBC.

infinite zest - 2015-11-16

Yeah.. he did some bumps for Adult Swim too, but I'm pretty sure that was the late night crowd and not the people who might tune into /W Bob And David because it's the guy from Arrested Development or Breaking Bad. So good for him!

boner - 2015-11-15

I might have to do the old "try Netflix for one month and then cancel it" thing.

boner - 2015-11-15

The last time I did that was for Arrested Development season 4 which was entirely awful and forgettable except for the magnitude of its awfulness.

Stopheles - 2015-11-15

This was a MUCH more pleasant Netflix comeback than Arrested Development's.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-11-15

I didn't hate the Arrested Development comeback as much as the internet did, but I can say that the one episode of /WB&D I've watched so far has made me laugh more than any given episode of AD season 4 did.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-11-15

Also, this intro is fine.

infinite zest - 2015-11-15

I still use my ex's dad's account, but yeah there's enough good stuff on there to warrant whatever it is per month in case he ever finds out: Bloodline is fantastic, Bojack Horseman (s2) is great, Narcos is even more amazing etc.

As far as AD went, I never really followed the show but watched all of S4, and I think they made the best of a kinda bad situation, especially knowing that there wouldn't be a S5. TPB's new season had the same vibe.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-16

I've been using my parents' account for years, and there's also an account from a freelance job I stopped doing maybe 5 years ago that was still good last time I checked.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-16

A parody of Salesman? What?
