Eric is on Gearslutz quite a bit too and its fun to chat with him about his history and studio, he's very open about it all and pretty sociable.

I love how many people like this are forum regulars. I remember being blown away when I was looking for info on my old Sunn amp and found Conrad Sundholm posts (or maybe it was the other guy who co-founded Sunn, it was a while back) on the Sunn forums.

I think half the reason I got back in to making electronic music and then started to get REALLY in to it a couple years ago is because synth people seem to be more open minded and good natured than most music types on the Internet. I mean there's still plenty of bullshit but compared to, say, guitarists? Not even close. No rock star mythology messing it up, for one thing.

It's also one of the less macho ones.

OZ, I saw your YT channel with the symphonic noise machine deal. Do you have any plans or notes on how you made that? It's exactly what I need making sound around here, I utterly zen out to that.

I was working on a proper one and got a finished prototype done over the summer but some other stuff came up. Eventually going to make something butit's dropped down the priority list.

You basically make a crude lap steel and glue a Dayton BCT-2 10watt bone conductive transducer (I tried surface drivers since there are more available at higher wattages but they didn't seem to work that well for some reason; I'm sure there are plenty of other BCT's that would work just as well) and drive it from a small chip amp.

On that video I'm using an old Pignose amp that hums a lot (but was convenient) and didn't shield any of the electronics, but a properly made one should sound a lot better.

The one in that video took about 45 minutes to make in my living room.

The easiest way would be to find a Sustainiac Model C (unfortunately discontinued but you might luck out - I got a basically new one a few years ago in trade for a beat up TR505 drum machine I got free), clamp it onto a 12 string guitar and plug something other than the guitar into the input.

The whole electromechanical sustainer thing is ancient, they were patented for use with acoustic lap steels years before electric guitars were invented, believe it or not.

This guy is a musical genius. I've loved him since high school when I was oddly addicted to Boheme.

I'm kind of neutral on the actual music (he's good at it but I don't listen to it in particular, but I also enjoy it on the odd occasion that I do) but I always like hearing him talk about process and he seems like he'd be fun to hang out with.

I don't really listen to/watch this podcast but I think he's a pretty regular guest on it when they do gear reviews.

At least he didn't say "they sound like shit" as what's his name from Duran Duran.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-19

If you want them to sound exactly like an analog synth then you'll be disappointed but if you want them to sound like something new then they're great, so much good software out there.

Oktay - 2015-11-19

"Exactly like an analog synth" is probably impossible given the discrete nature of things but have you played around with Diva? To my amateur ears, it sounds pretty damn close. I'm kinda curious what you think.

Plus, I think some people ignore the most important variable in the equation: a good sound card. They think "oh it's all digital, all the cards to the same thing" but that couldn't be farther from the truth. If your card has a shitty DA converter, everything will sound like shit. I remember the first time I replaced my SoundBlaster Audigy with an M-Audio 410 and boy was I surprised.

(I shouldn't have to say this, but I'm not talking about you here! I know you're the opposite of that. In fact, you'll probably cite some obscure design flaw and let me know how much the DA on the 410 sucks heh heh.)

I accidentally dupe-voted my own sub in the hopper, but it is FULL, full is say, of analog synths.
