There are people who still refuse to believe Joan Crawford abused Christina, but there are more than enough reliable accounts of Joan being a total psycho-bitch that I find it totally believable.

StanleyPain - 2015-11-22

The middle ground is probably the more realistic story. She probably was pretty awful to her kids, but it's also very plausible this life story (convieniently told after Crawford had died) is greatly exaggerated to generate a paycheck, which it did nicely.

il fiore bel - 2015-11-22

I honestly don't know if the story was told for a paycheck or not. But the fact it was told after Crawford's death doesn't make it convenient or exaggerated. Some people live in fear of their abusers, even if they're lucky enough to flee while said abuser is still living. It probably feels safe to talk after the abuser's passing, because there's less chance of retaliation for speaking about what was done to them.

The flim was magnificent and Faye Dunaway was just fantastic as Crawford. It's from a child's point of view so the exaggerated events fit the perspective nicely. Come for the coat hangers and stay for the scene where she chops down the little fig(?) tree in the garden.

This was also my childhood, only mine was the poverty drug-fueled version and no one was concerned about cleanliness.

Meerkat - 2015-11-22

When I was a kid, I was blissfully unaware of my parents' narcissistic bullshit.

Seriously, I thought all parents went on vacations without their kids and sent them postcards from Disneyland.

My parents were instrumental in my choice not to have children.

But after meeting actual human parents I've come to realize that maybe there was something wrong with mine.

gravelstudios - 2015-11-22

I have remarkably functional, loving, and supportive parents.

You guys are making me feel deprived.

Meerkat - 2015-11-22

Seriously, don't underestimate the value of loving, functional and supportive parents. Or at least halfway decent ones.

My parents will be fucking up their kids lives until they are both in urns or graves and can no longer lay guilt trips on us for not continuing to sacrifice our time for their entertainment.

I am not exaggerating; I wish I were.

gravelstudios - 2015-11-23

Well, that second part was a joke. I'm not trying to say that my parents are perfect, but Seriously, the older I get, the more grateful I am that I had a mostly functional family because it seems like that's a rarity.

TeenerTot - 2015-11-23

When we were kids, my brother and I liked to bait my mom by calling her "Mommie Dearest." We'd get such a beating as a result, but it was almost worth it.

EnochEmery - 2015-11-22

All I know is if the significant other does not stop saying lines from this movie while doing his horrible Joan Crawford impersonation every time he's drunk, I am going to beat him to death with a wire coat hanger someday.

cognitivedissonance - 2015-11-22

The movie is fine, but the John Waters commentary is better.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-11-22

Huh. Of all the shit that my up-bringers did to me that I've always thought of as abuse, making me eat what was put in front of me isn't one of them.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-11-23

Yeah but then she makes her eat the same food after it's been on the table for like a day. This movie is all sorts of fucked up. Joan Crawford was seriously nuts.

chumbucket - 2015-11-23

She did a good job of convincing me that her children were terrible.
