It's like a nihilistic house video: "Should we maybe at least move the garbage out of the shot?" "Eh, who cares? We're all just fragile meat-puppets sliding down the mortal coil, waiting to be subsumed into the void. Now do a slow panning shot."

I know Key West's expensive but what the fuck? I guess this was like 10 years ago now, but I worked with a guy who'd live in Wisconsin during the summer and Key West in the winter, subsisting off nothing but his spraypaint art and living in a tent. As far as I know the cops were cool with campers on the beach as long as they didn't cause a ruckus.

And conservatives like to quip about the California housing market. Yeesh

Location, location, location.

Wish it were the voice of Robin Leach.

This can't be a real ad.

I looked the house up on Google Maps and it's the only dumpy house on what looks to be a very nice street. Not that I live in Key West, but my immediate neighbor's house is similarly dilapidated. He's an alcoholic and things have only gotten worse since his wife died on their front lawn a couple of years ago.

gravelstudios - 2015-11-24

I did the same. I'll bet whoever buys it knocks it down and builds something bigger and nicer.

chumbucket - 2015-11-24

I'll bet Fred Sanford and Grady Wilson could have done wonders with that opportunity.

Apparently you can't tear it down because it's an historical landmark. It reminds me of this house that finally did get torn down in Portland: it used to be a nice mansion on a very desirable street, but eventually became a crack den and even worse:

But yeah I grew up in a similar situation: the neighborhood has since gone up in value from middle to upper middle class, but as more doctors and lawyers were moving in, the house next door was sort of invaded by a couple of guys who befriended an old man whose wife had passed away and turned to the bottle. It was like proto-Nick Bravo! But despite all the late night parties and drug deals, there was nothing anybody could do because the old man still owned the house.

No worries as rising ocean levels will take care of it soon enough.

Cena_mark - 2015-11-24

I don't see the appeal of Key West. I had a port call there once, and really there was nothing special about it. There's nothing special about its beaches, it doesn't have good snorkeling spots, and its too damned pricy. All it really has is drinking, and we all spent way too much money there.

My dad seems to like it; he has conferences down there every now and again, so I've got a whole bunch of Hemingway Cat coasters lying around, and t-shirts I'll never wear. Also besides a vacation to Hawaii that I was too young to remember, I've never lived in or visited a climate where I can just jump in the ocean (it's happened before on the Oregon Coast but it has to be a long stretch of upper 80s/low 90s at the Coast to make up for the rest of the year).. And biking home last night in 35 degree rain makes their record low of 64 degrees sound pretty nice.. but I'd probably just choose Hawaii. I don't know the Islands very well but CL has listings for 1BRs or shares that are cheaper than they are here.

Also Bloodline on Netflix paints it as a place I'd never want to visit, but that's just TV. It's like not wanting to go to Louisiana after watching True Detective.

Cena_mark - 2015-11-24

I went to the Hemingway house.
The main problem with the island is that its so small, and you can see pretty much everything in one day.

betabox - 2015-11-24

I'm glad that I went there once.

Still not as bad as Vancouver housing prices...
