This looks good. It's kinda too bad that it came out around the same time as Sword Art Online, which is the same general idea but really really dumb.

Xenocide - 2015-12-01

They're actually pretty different. Summer Wars is about what happens when social media and data farming gain too much of a monopoly over the internet and begin fucking up people's lives; the characters never actually "enter" the internet, the movie just uses that as a cool visual metaphor for characters posting stuff or writing code.

Sword Art Online, meanwhile, is about "HEY WHAT IF WORLD OF WARCRAFT WAS REAL LIFE AND YOU WERE THE BEST PLAYER AND THEN YOU GOT TO TOUCH A GIRL'S BOOB."

infinite zest - 2015-12-01

Well when you put it that way.. to be fair though I've only seen a part of one episode. He likes the show and I was working Graveyard so we had a little slumber party and watched Toonami, but I was mostly zoning out. It also seems like an extended rip-off of the William Gibson one-off on the X-Files, which I think everybody agrees sucks..

There was something else that blurred the lines between the world of gaming and reality that either show borrowed from, oh yeah Super Mario Brothers Super Show!

SolRo - 2015-12-01

There is never a blurring of the lines in summer wars, just the online sequences are well animated...like you aren't blurring the lines between reality and virtual reality when you're playing a game with good graphics...you're still alone on the couch tapping at a controller.

Yeah I was referring to Sword Art Online not Summer Wars.

Crab Mentality - 2015-12-01

This movie is great. Totally worth a watch. Also, in the dub, the main character is voiced by the guy who does Dean Venture.

Mamoru Hosoda is pretty good in general. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Wolf Children are also worth checking out.

fedex - 2015-12-01

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-12-01

I stopped watching cartoons when I turned 13.

fedex - 2015-12-01

wow...your loss man, and I say that not just as an animator, but as a film lover too.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-12-01

Many (most) live action films are puerile, infantile garbage, the same can be said for cartoons. However a vanishingly small percentage of both live action or cartoon (or whatever) productions are truly excellent, I watch those.

SolRo - 2015-12-01

Do you also have a month and day for when you became so boring?

SolRo - 2015-12-01

because you're really boring

SolRo - 2015-12-01

...I lost interest and wandered off while you were saying something about how you used your tax refund to add some kind of wood-like cabinets to your kitchen.

SolRo - 2015-12-01

and even from across the room you still tried to put me to sleep as you attempted to impress some other poor soul with how good you think smooth jazz sounds on your BOSE sound system.

oddeye - 2015-12-02

6 months is too short a time to judge if you made a mistake or not Vainglorious

This is a damn good movie. Not a bad dub, either.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-12-02

This movie is more about family than it is about technology. It's also excellent.

fedex - 2015-12-02

that is very true, and one reason it works so very well.

sasazuka - 2015-12-04

One thing I liked about this movie was how Natsuki's voice actress in Japanese isn't really an anime "seiyuu", I think she was actually a gravure idol, so she sounded a lot more "natural" than your typical anime girl.

Checking Wikipedia after I wrote that... yeah, it was Nanami Sakuraba, who has gone on to do mostly live-action roles. Most recently, she played Sasha in the live-action ATTACK ON TITAN movies (and she presumably will again if they make more, which I'd be astonished if they don't).

My favourite character in that film, though, is Kazuma. He needs his own spin-off movie or series, stat.
