I would argue that we DO need to tolerate intolerance; after all, ---that is the whole point of tolerance!!!--- "Tolerance" means putting up with people you dislike, simply because putting up with people you dislike is the Right Thing To Do. Something which you "tolerate" is something which you hate, but have nevertheless learned to live with, because you understand that people Other than you have worth. Everyone wants to live their lives in a different way, and you yourself have neither moral nor legal jurisdiction over their hobbies, their bodies, or their minds. If you don't HATE a thing, you cannot "tolerate" it - no, without hate, we would say you "approve" of the thing-in-question, "accept" it, even "embrace" it. For example, I "tolerate" my friend Cena's bizarre interest in Steven Universe (ee-YUCK!), but I cannot say I "tolerate" his interest in MLP. Huh? Why? Because I like MLP! I don't NEED to tolerate his interest in colorful cartoon ponies, because I already fully accept him, and embrace his Broniness as my own.


We don't need to "accept" Jimmybob. We don't need to "embrace" his ideology. But we do need to be "tolerant" of it, a moral duty which imposes a number of obligations upon us - including being polite to him, giving what he says a fair hearing no matter how odious out of our comfort zone, and YES, above all, allowing him to speak.

The alternative is: we could admit that we now feel the need for tolerance has run it's course, and the only thing that remains is for we, the winners of the Culture War, to kill off any remaining unbelievers. This is also a possibility, but if it's one that people are willing to accept, then we might as well be honest about it, and stop trying to use ridiculous doublespeak slogans like "We Cannot Tolerate Intolerance" - slogans meant to cling to shreds of our now long-dead liberalism, and obfuscate what is, in reality, merely the resurgence of our own violent tribal hatreds.

If you are mature and tolerant of this sort of idiot (ie. gracefully ignore their shit, or respond in a reasoned manner)
They will either get bored and leave, or else actually start to engage, to their betterment.
Meaningless and fruitless ideological confrontation seems to be exactly what they crave, and by providing it you just encourage them to continue.

Ignoring trolls doesn't make them stop, it does make everyone else stop though, ultimately.

Yeah.. my mom was telling me about her best friend, who met the most perfect Austrian guy in college (you probably know where this is going already). He was charming, funny, apparently the perfect catch and they got engaged really quick. Anyway, my mom, dad, her friend and fiancee went backpacking in Europe and stopped by the guy's parents' place to crash for a couple of days, and during dinner he came out dressed in his father's SS uniform. And just like that, the engagement was off. And the thing is, he never seemed like a white supremacist or Nazi sympathizer, because he wasn't, it was just instilled in him to be proud of his daddy's service in the war.
