I like what they've done with the building at 701 e. Wash but MAN do I miss the old Buy and Sell shop. My hands-down favorite store in Madison growing up. The Buy and Sell shop was a floor to ceiling flea market in a huge building that now houses three bars and a coffe shop and some office space I think. I bought a bunch of Edison cyliders there before I knew what those even were, just liked the boxes. Ah, well. By all the second hand accounts I get from the young people I work with the high noon is still a fun place but the last show I saw there was Subtle in 2008.

And Neil Hamburger is a wicked old scumbag who tells filthy jokes not fit for the ears of this clearly refined and cultured audience. Shame on him.

I don't think I remember that one. I got there a year after the whole Jocko's thing, and a year before the Okays Corral thing. I would've been too young to get in anyway, although I was able to sneak in to see the New Pornographers with my housemate's ID when I was 19 at that weird sportsbar place by camp randall that for whatever reason had all the cool bands before High Noon opened up..

Someone told me that they're getting rid of the big Octopus at the car wash too. I want to go back and visit but every place I worked is now gone, and two of the houses I lived in also caught on fire..

Saw The Melvins last summer at the High Noon, going back there to see Babes in Toyland soon, still a cool little venue. Also, no worries IZ, the Octopus Carwash mascot is still flying high baby!

Yay! I remember hearing that they sold to a different car wash, but I'm glad they're keeping it up. Portland had a big purple inflatable octopus at a Greek restaurant, and when the restaurant went under the poor octopus got removed and put up for free on craigslist because nobody wanted to move it (it was huge). I don't now its whereabouts but I'm guessing it was some rich Martin Skrelli type guy who had enough time and money to get a truck big enough to move it, and it's probably in some Intel exec's back yard way out in the suburbs now.. makes me sad but the thought of more than one Octopus losses in one year would've driven me over the edge. :)

I think I saw that same Melvins tour. Did they do a bunch of Wipers covers? Their cover of Youth of America is pretty well known but they also did some other covers in my neck of the woods. It was the next best thing to seeing the Wipers, which is a band I'll sadly (probably) never see. C'mon guys reunion! The Replacements did it and half of them are dead!

They did a few Bhole surfers covers, and the girl from the opening band came up and they did a Bikini Kill song, they might have done some other stuff but I didn't catch it if they did.

As for the octopus, IDK if they plan on taking it down, but at least the last time I drove through Madison it was still up, it would be a real shame if they took it down.

Yeah I'm guessing by then people were pretty much on to the act. I saw him in 2002 and I'm not sure if anyone knew what his thing was yet (I didn't) but he opened for various Drag City bands. That's the only time I saw him and the audience was polarized, but I imagine in 06 or 7 it was kind of like the people at shows who think it's a good idea to sing along to their favorite bands' songs. If there's one thing I like about people holding up their cellphones and shit at concerts to take videos, it's that it's significantly cut down on interaction with the artist.
