Selling items in a store is exactly the same as marriage ceremonies performed in a religious environment.

I mean what

infinite zest - 2015-12-16

Everybody probably remembers the wedding cake place in Oregon that refused to bake a cake for a lesbian couple for religious reasons, and got driven out of business, but more recently right in the middle of the city (the cake place was kind of in the Red Zone suburbs of Portland) an indoor Farmers Market was going up, sort of to combat the fact that nobody likes to shop at Farmers Markets in the pouring rain and end up at Whole Foods. Which makes it good for the local farmers who can't compete with the high-end "organic" farming that those stores buy from. Great idea right?

Just one thing: before the market even opened it was revealed through a simple facebook search of their personal accounts that they have very deep-seeded religious beliefs that homosexuals should not be married. It was a huge local controversy, but they defended their beliefs and said things like (and I'm paraphrasing) "it's just Kale, we're not marrying anybody and we believe everybody has their own rights to their own beliefs but these are ours'." After a slew of protests before the Market even opened, it finally did, and they made sure to line the storefront with LGBT flags and a sign that said "all are welcome," and as the story goes actively tried to hire gay men and women to create a better image of their store.

The good news? All were welcome but nobody came, and the Farmers Market was gone in less than 6 months. The bad news? They've basically been going around talking exactly like Cruz is here for why the market failed, and now people are supporting them in opening up another location a little bit further away from a part of town where people use their brains once in a while.

Is a privately-owned for-profit wedding chapel really a "religious" environment?

magnesium - 2015-12-16

It's been a while since I read about it, but didn't the Oregon cake jerks actually only get in trouble because they responded to criticism by posting the personal details of the lesbian couple online so that other homophobes could harass them?

infinite zest - 2015-12-16

Not really sure. I know a few people who have been ordained just so they could marry their friends. It's actually easier to do than order a package from Amazon. So in a few simple steps you're a walking for-profit minister. At that point I guess it just depends on what you want to do with it.

infinite zest - 2015-12-16

@Magnesium I hadn't heard anything about that, but their facebook page is still up and there's a lot of that, since the store's still around but just home operated now since the lawsuit forced them to close the brick and mortar location. In fact, last time I checked they tried to make good by sending out cakes to various LGBT groups in the city, saying "we love you," and included a DVD of the movie Audacity, the most passive aggressive homophobic propoganda I'll never see.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-12-16

I asked because what Cruz kept referring to as a "church" isn't actually a church. It's a sort of museum built in what used to be a church and it's owned by a married couple who also rent it out as a wedding chapel.

The law says if they want to rent it out to hetero couples, they have to also rent it out to same-sex couples so their response was not to rent it out to anyone.

Coax_Current - 2015-12-16

Off topic, but IZ, that farmer's market place was crap through and through, they didn't really carry local stuff in any significant amount. So it was a sham in addition to being run by people that don't get the concept of civil rights. Personally, it's important to me to be offended by both.

5 for invoking MLK first thing.

infinite zest - 2015-12-16

Interesting. OT as well but I grew up right down the street from there and used to go there every day after school when the store was a regular old drug store called Rodgers. Glad to know that they didn't follow through on their promise in the first place, but I never went in there. Hopefully it gets turned into something cool like a music venue and not another antique shop. Do you live in PDX Coax? My local haunt is the Yamhill but I usually wind up at Star Bar on my way home from work. :)

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-12-16

Oh and if gay people actually did throw out a religious person and refused to sell flowers, it would totally be against the Gay Code established by the Gay Man Carta Accord of 1970, wherein it states that flowers are for everyone and therefore you should be fabulous to people (see: Article 7: Fabulous Powers Proliferation) and in addition the media would tear anyone apart for refusing Christians anything in the South.

He's a native of Canada, born on Canadian soil, but you aren't going to hear the Teabillies bitch about he legally can't be President and demand to see his birth certificate.

misterbuns - 2015-12-16

it makes so much sense that you like the company taxi drivers.

SolRo - 2015-12-16

your gullible yuppie stupidity explains why you like companies that abuse contract workers.

TeenerTot - 2015-12-17

Interesting Uber side-note...In the recent elections in Saudi Arabia, women were finally allowed to vote. But since women are not allowed to drive, many used Uber to get to the polls.

SolRo - 2015-12-17

That story confused the fuck out of me, because Saudi women are also not allowed to go out without being accompanied by a male family member and certainly wouldn't be allowed to go alone in a cab with an unknown male driver

TeenerTot - 2015-12-17

Perhaps male family member=young son who won't harass her too much.

ashtar. - 2015-12-17

"We should allow people to discriminate however they want in their private business. Customers can always go elsewhere." Is his position, if I'm interpreting him right.

This would also support "no colored" lunch counters, etc. Congratulations, Ted.
