many musicians feel that lacquer negatively affects the sound of the horn. You can buy new instruments that aren't lacquered, but many people prefer the sound of an old horn that the lacquer has naturally worn off of through use. The patina is part of that whole process. I have a bachelor's degree in music ed, so I am fully qualified to say this: The saxophone is by far and away the easiest wind instrument to just pick up and play. It was designed that way. If you give a 10 year old a flute or a trumpet, it will probably take a few days just to get a sound out, but any kid can just blow into a sax and get a sound instantly, and the fingerings are really easy to memorize. This, combined with the sax being viewed as a rock/pop instrument leads to an overabundance of mediocre saxophonists.
