His neck...

I wonder does his chin-iilusion-providing-beard actually help? What would he look like without it.

ashtar. - 2015-12-29

his head is a thumb

Two Jar Slave - 2015-12-29

Cut him some slack. The guy is 71, and who knows what that is in human years?

infinite zest - 2015-12-29

If there's a heaven I hope that Kurosawa and Lucas are on some Maury Povich show where they debate who Star Wars' Father was. Also what "other things?" Also nice shoes Charlie!

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-12-29

I see it more as a big toe, but perhaps I'm just splitting hairs....

baleen - 2015-12-29

True Forced Assholeness

Meerkat - 2015-12-29

My stuff was totally awesome fifth dimensional family chess games but hey I guess you guys got what you wanted, whatevs.

Scrimmjob - 2015-12-29

It's a lot like a break up, you don't call, you don't drive by their house, you just go on national television and shit talk them!

That guy - 2015-12-30

Sure, but (and I'm refraining from auto-1 this time because this interview is classic shit) Lucas could list 8 or 10 ways that they fucked it up and he'd be right, if hypocritical. I skimmed through just enough of this interview to know that he has a problem with the storytelling, and I think that's fucking classic.

Not only did Lucas shit on his own doorstep, he also sat on his balls for 15 years or so. He could have made all 9 movies himself if he wasn't such a semi-competent storyteller who's amazing with/amazed by pushing the technological envelope.

Thank you, Mr. Lucas, for all you have wrought. Movies are so much richer now that the VFX is the story. Thank your buddy Steven for me, too, for his genius in cramming more emotion into a movie than anyone thought one could contain. Glad you two won. Spectacle, emotion, what else is there?

Quad9Damage - 2015-12-30

He called Disney, the people who gave him .4 billion for his franchise, white slavers.

WHITE SLAVERS. If he hadn't stopped himself there he might have made a rape joke.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-12-29

Can't have it both ways, Mr. Hollywood Billionaire Man!

I sometimes find myself defending George Lucas online, but his response to the new movie has been childish.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-12-29

Also, this man has no idea what 'space opera' or 'soap opera' mean. Someone once told him they liked Star Wars because it was about the generational family drama, not just the spaceships, and he's trying to recapture that person's ideas but can't.

StanleyPain - 2015-12-29

It's funny I should come home to this. I just saw Force Awakens myself. As most critics are pointing out, the film uses nostalgia as too much a crutch, but if that's what the films needed to get a boost to where they're going, then I'm for it. TFA was pretty much the Star Wars movie I think everyone has been wanting since ROTJ. The story is a bit simplistic and the lack even a tiny bit of exposition to explain some things leaves the plot a little vague in places, but fuck it...it's a damn good, brisk piece of entertainment that's brilliantly shot. 50 times better than the fucking prequels.

Lucas can kiss my ass. Great film-maker at one point, perhaps, but your selfish and egotistical taking of credit for everything SW is (despite the writers, artists, craftsmen that MADE the fucking things) has gone beyond being just delusional and now it's practically libelous.

SW getting passed into other hands is the best thing that could have happened.

kingarthur - 2015-12-30

You're all missing the point. Star Wars is made to sell stuff to kids. The fact that it appeals to a sense of nostalgia in adults is because it captured those adults as children. This is the same business model Sanrio uses, only they're not burdened with having to tell a story to go with all their licensed merchandise. In fact, Sanrio has, in the past, made it a point to leave their characters as ambiguous as possible.

Point being: it's for kids. Did the kid in the seat down from you say "WOW!" or smile during the movie and then pretend he or she was Rey or Finn fighting the dark side when they got home? Yes? Good, because that was the point.

Just stop kidding yourselves that it was made for grown ups. The grown ups are an after thought. They recycled the same plot points because they work and it was the simplest way to please everyone.

kingarthur - 2015-12-30

*the grown ups are an after thought as far as the movie's plot is concerned. They need those adult's sweet, sweet cash. You can't always count on the nag factor from kids, though it is powerful.

You know you can buy Hello Kitty branded motor oil? I betcha there's Star Wars branded motor oil out there somewhere.

kingarthur - 2015-12-30

And, if anyone's curious, yes I liked the movie. It made me smile. The relationship between Finn and Rey was sweet.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-12-30

A simple rule of thumb is: movies for adults do not involve magic teens, talking animals, or a wisecracking smuggler with a heart of gold.

Adham Nu'man - 2016-01-01

Saying "DUH! Star Wars is for kids" is a pretty retarded comment.

The adventures of Huckleberry Finn, White Fang, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, The Little Prince, Where the Wild things Are and Dr Seuss' books are also for children. Something for children can be interesting and well written. The original Star Wars films had a very good, evocative story arc set in a mysterious, fictional universe, with a dash of Taoist philosophy/spirituality mixed in, it all blended into a whole that had a strong staying power in the imagination of people.

Which is why, despite not being a Star Wars nerd and not having rewatched the originals periodically (like many people do) I can clearly remember what the story was about and the events and characters from the original movies, while I have absolutely no recollection of what the Flash Gordon movie was about, or as a matter of fact, why I can't remember what happened in the Star Wars prequels (despite the fact that I saw those only a few years ago, rather than a few decades).

Quad9Damage - 2015-12-30

You don't stalk your kids whom you've been intimately involved with after you've broken up with them and sold them to white slavers.

CIWB - 2015-12-30

It does seem that clumsy attempts at dialogue aren't limited to his screenplays.

fedex - 2015-12-30

the White Slavers comment made me roll my eyes rather far into the top of my head

chumbucket - 2015-12-30

Yeah well he's probably too busy making American Graffiti 2: The Next Generation Of Layabouts anyway.

Bobonne - 2015-12-30

The joke here is that there WAS an American Graffiti 2.

Void 71 - 2015-12-30

Bless George Lucas for not giving in to hollow fan service. The prequels were pure shit, but they weren't shitty in the cynical focus-groupy sort of way that the new Star Wars is. They were shitty because a once-talented director overestimated himself, but you have to respect the fact that he ruined them completely outside of the Hollywood system. He did it on his own dime, in his own way.

Mother Lumper - 2015-12-30

He still made a boatload of money on the prequels, which is astounding given how bad they are.

kingarthur - 2015-12-30

People were taking their kids to see them and, everyone was like "OH! STAR WARZ IS BACK I HAS TO SEEZ IT!" then, after the dust settled, they went "Surely the second one can't be as bad as the first" and then by the time the third one came around it was a mixture of "let's finish of this shit pile" and "I WANT TO SEE THE MOMENT HUGGIEKINS TURNS INTO DERP VADORZ!" which was hilariously bungled and probably counts as the biggest metaphorical photocopy of a cock ever put to film.

Hazelnut - 2015-12-30

The Force Awakens is an awesome movie, and anyone who can't appreciate it needs more wonder in their heart.

That guy - 2015-12-30

Did you say "needs more underwear fart"?

I could swear that's what I heard.

kingarthur - 2015-12-30

I agree. It's for the kids and kids at heart. And then to sell shit loads of stuff to those same kids. But still... Wu-Tang is for the children.

memedumpster - 2015-12-30

The graphic violence in it TFA is cynical pandering to stunted adult aged males who need a grimdark edge to their childhood to get off (oh look, lasers leave gaping gore holes, kids! BUUUUURN TORTUUUURE!), but other than that, I enjoyed it quite a bit. They did a wise thing and played the trailer for Star Trek Beyond before it, which is a movie that seems destined to make Into Darkness actually look like The Wrath of Khan. Doctor Who got a lot of love for its 50th, Star Trek is going to get shat upon.

At least Star Trek Axanar will kick ass.

SixDigitDebt - 2015-12-30

Paramount and CBS seem to think so.. or at least that it will kick enough ass to be worth subduing in court. They're fine with fanfic but the second it is fanfic with a reasonable budget they lose their minds.

memedumpster - 2015-12-30

Fuck 'em if they can't write a script, fan films have been carrying Star Trek for fifteen years now and will probably have to for fifteen more.

memedumpster - 2015-12-30

Actually, let me take that back. By what I have read, people are being told by CBS that CBS intends to spend 2016 suing ALL creators of Star Trek fan media (from film to paint shop pro pics) for damages.

I may have just abruptly stopped being a Star Trek fan. Fuck Star Trek.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-31

Wait, does that include porn? Please tell me you're kidding, because I don't want to be sued.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-31

Also, lol @ the age-old "tough copyright laws are needed, because tough copyright laws promote creativity" argument. Way to go, CBS.

SixDigitDebt - 2015-12-31

They've got to be ready for the new Trek series in 2017. Time to starve the market, I suppose.

SixDigitDebt - 2015-12-30

A New Hope V2.0

George is an asshole.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-01-02

Charlie, you are not helping here. He is not the only one who can write Star Wars. The proof is all three prequels.
