It makes sense to me. They arrive at Lucas Ranch, meet R2D2 and speak in kid slang. They don't "get" R2D2 so C3PO breaks it down street style. Then things probably happen. Really, this is better writing than The Simpsons in the past 15 years or so.

That's depressing to think about.

How does it make sense? R2-D2 and C-3PO don't live at Lucas Ranch; in-universe, they live in the Star Wars Galaxy far, far away, while IRL, they are fictional characters, and thus do not live anywhere.

Also, the kids don't "get" R2-D2 because R2-D2 speaks Binary, and even in the Star Wars galaxy (where droids are common) hardly any non-robot can understand that language. The kids understand *English* perfectly well, so all C-3PO had to do was stick to regular English, like he usually does!

It's called Galactic Basic, idiot.

Is it, though? First, C-3PO, as a protocol droid, would no doubt initiate conversations in the native language of the people to whom he is speaking. The Ant Farm children are, presumably, average American Earthlings*, hence C-3PO would choose to speak with them in American English, a language which JUST HAPPENS to sound like Basic (or does it?). This principle holds true regardless of which American-localized Earth television show he happens to appear upon - Sesame Street, Donny & Marie, The Muppets, etc. On American television, he speaks English.

Second, most people assume that Basic sounds (sounded?) exactly like English. But is this actually true? What evidence do we have to suggest this to be the case? Sure, the films, TV shows, and other merchandise released in the United States feature characters who speak a Basic that sounds identical to modern English - but is that because the language IS identical to modern English, or merely because what we are hearing is a localized translation? Consider: when Star Wars material is released overseas, lines spoken in Basic are generally dubbed into whatever language is most commonly understood by the anticipated audience. Basic in Japan sounds like Japanese, Basic in Germany sounds like German, Basic in Pakistan sounds like Urdu. Obviously, these languages cannot ALL be phonologically identical to "genuine" Galactic Standard Basic, so why assume that English is any different?



* I know nothing about the show and could, of course, be wrong about this one particular point. Perhaps, as the name of the series implies, the characters are not Earth children, but are instead holographically-cloaked, sentient ants? More research is necessary.

Nevermind, after consulting the ANT Farm wiki, I have ascertained that the children are not sentient ants; ANT is actually an acronym for Advanced Natural Talent, and the three children are apparently some kind of predictive-programming assets, most likely meant to prepare Disney consumers for the coming age of biotech-corporation-controlled, genetically-modified transhuman slaves.
